I would gladly embrace shitty young ones over old ones. At least the younger ones are thinking about the future.

On the one hand I disagree & think that there are tangible differences between major parties (granted not as big as we would like).
On the other hand - Douglas Adams.

It’s not like Trump is some mastermind coming up with all these ideas on his own, and Miller isn’t likable enough to get elected.

But Trump gives me Steven Miller. Whereas on the other hand I don’t think Steven Miller comes with Trump attached. Nor is he capable of actually winning anything.

Yeah like both Trump and Biden won in big competitive primaries with a lot of candidates younger than them. I think part of the reason we have so many old politicians is that young candidates feel more like positively asserting the future of their party, and nobody really likes the futures they’re asserting. Without that vision, the status quo wins out by default.

James Buchanan. He intervened in the Dredd Scott decision (on the side of slavers) and stood idly by as states secceeded, allowing the south to gather strength for the civil war.

Bush jr was Abraham Fucking Lincoln compared to trump. At least bush jr had some cronies with government experience around him and not Fox News hosts in charge of everything. And bear in mind, I fucking hate bush jr.

Bush Jr. Did a bump set for Trump with the patriot act, going around Congress for wars, stacking courts… Citizen’s United was rammed thru by 5 justices appointed by W Jr (2) Reagan (2) and HW (1). Which makes it pretty obvious that the CIA and by extension now the courts are essentially just the henchmen for the American corporate cartel.

Trump is a patsy so if all this shit backfires they can go “whoa whoa whoa WE didn’t do a bunch of genocides and political murders! That was that crazy guy and all his cartoonishly evil henchmen! We’re regular adults and we’re reasonable. We’ll just dial back the fascism a bit for a while. Now shut up and get back to work.”

None of this is wrong, but to call trump just a patsy now seems wrong. The first term, yeah. This term is all about his whims, ring-kissing, and burning the house to the ground to feel important. Fucker is way off the rails and wants to end the republic; which, despite its sundry flaws, was still semi-functional as a going concern.

You’re a decade off for the great depression

you aren’t an economist unless you have devoted an entire year of your life to studying the great depression and have your own pet theory as to why it happened. mine is, and it’s a fairly accepted position (note this article is on Bretton Woods, which is what came out of the ashes of WW2 and the great depression. the explanation of what caused the great depression is the context of the article.), that the united states was on the the gold standard, which essentially caused a currency war.

I honestly think seeing Trump win killed him. His wife dying probably played a larger role, but I don’t think seeing the country go down the toilet did nothing to him, and the election was the killing blow. The cancer was irrelevant, he already survived that like three times.

that is how you ordinarily behave when you lose an election. in the face of fascism i’d expect different behavior but should they have been able to put everything together the way we did? i want to answer yes but i don’t know what things looked like from inside their heads. for example if i have four or five more days at the stress level i’m carrying right now, i am going to need one hell of a salsa bar to work through some things before i can even think again.
