Cute Russian comic. The home of the official English version is here if anyone wants to skip ahead (or support them): https://boosty.to/gabiconomics-en

The concept of Alienation of labour is simple - when the results of labour do not belong to the worker with its further usage unrelated and invisible to workers - that result quickly becomes inconsequential, leading to worker indifference.

This is maybe my favourite one so far, and I've read up to the last english translated one on boosty. I was doing some volunteer work today, mounting and re-mounting samples at the herbarium. It is work, though not particularly demanding, and as a volunteer I am of course not being paid. But I'll be damned if my little pile of correctly prepped specimens isn't more satisfying than any paycheck I've ever gotten.

Nothing too exciting, the only specimen I mounted was a horrible weed covered in fine spines that stuck in my hand and were too small to see, so I had to use sticky tape to get them out (Cechrus macrourus). The ones I remounted were all Hibbertia spp., guinea flowers, which are lovely cheerful yellow flowers when fresh but, pressed, lose most of their colour. At least I was familiar with the natives though so I know what they look like live:)

Eep w the weed spines, that sounds painful, if they're anything like those from the itchy bomb tree https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lagunaria_patersonia. Do they give you gloves to use when mounting species like that? Or does that impede your dexterity?

It wasn't as bad as it sounds, I got pricked two or three times. Probably should have worn gloves but I was more than halfway done before the first one got me. I think the spines were just so tiny that mostly they didn't do anything.

I wonder what kind of capital equipment is required to start a wheel shop.

Things were a lot easier before the industrial revolution. Poor Gabby could probably never start her own textile mill.

I've literally only seen them use saws, hammers and chisels. They have some machines that I think are just for bracing the wheels while spokes are put in. Gabi and Falke built those themselves by doing night shifts in Chief's shop who was nice enough to at least let them use the machines when they weren't being used for the shop.

Apparently wheelsmiths used steam to bend the wood so that must require a special setup.

[Chief] was nice enough to at least let them use the machines

Didn't he make Gabi pay coins to use them?

Oh yeah, he might've done that...
