Artificial intelligence, in its broadest sense, is intelligence exhibited by machines, particularly computer systems.
These days when AI is mentioned, it's most often about Large Language Models and related chatbots, such as ChatGPT.
Alternatives
Most of the big AI companies are in the USA (OpenAI, Meta, Google, Anthropic) or China (Baidu, DeepSeek).
The biggest European player in the LLM AI market is Mistral, in Paris, France. They are the creators of Le Chat, a ChatGTP alternative.
Another well-known European company is DeepL from Cologne, Germany, providing translation services.

The future
In February 2025, the European Commission introduced InvestAI, an initiative aimed at mobilizing €200 billion for AI investments across Europe. For now, we wait and see if that has the desired effect.
