Popular Anime Genres
Anime is the Japanese word for “animation” and mostly refers to the animated movies and TV shows produced by Japanese artists and companies. Thus, anime refers to quite a broad range of content that cannot be easily summarized in one category. However, there are some common anime genres and types that are helpful to know about to navigate the world of anime. Read more about them below!
- Horror: Just as horror is a common genre in Western media, it also abounds in the world of anime. The unlimited power of animation has lent itself to masterful, creative stories which use the horror genre as a way to convey deeper fears and anxieties. Representative horror anime include The Promised Neverland, Perfect Blue, and Made in Abyss.
- Isekai: Isekai refers to a genre of anime in which the protagonist is transported into another realm, world, or dimension, typically one with fantasy or sci-fi elements. The protagonist is usually then given the opportunity to make something of themselves in this new world as they explore its unfamiliarity. Representative isekai anime include Sword Art Online, Re:Zero, and Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation.
- Romance: Romance will find itself everywhere stories are told, and anime is known for its excellent and diverse varieties of romantic couplings. Though romance typically finds itself in a side plot in just about every anime, some anime that focus on burgeoning romances include Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, Ranma ½, and My Happy Marriage.
- Shojo: Shojo means “young lady” in Japanese, and also refers to the category of anime that are often targeted to young girls. These anime often follow the lives of teenagers as they navigate adolescence, and often have a bright and cute aesthetic. Representative shojo anime include Ouran High School Host Club, Sailor Moon, and Sugar Apple Fairy Tale.
- Shonen: Shonen refers to the category of anime that is often targeted to young boys under the age of 15, but because of its general popularity, it is enjoyed by wider demographics. Shonen anime typically follow a young boy in a world full of adventure in which he must learn to make something of himself. Representative shonen anime include One Piece, Naruto, and My Hero Academia.
- Slice of Life: Slice of Life anime are those that focus on the little things every day that make life significant and interesting, rather than an overarching dramatic narrative. They tend to follow the everyday conflicts of normal people living their normal (or sometimes not-so-normal) lives. Representative Slice of Life anime include The Disastrous Life of Saiki K., Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, and Spice and Wolf.
-
Sports: Sports make for invigorating tales of competition and ambition, and their dynamism has made it a natural target for animation. Sports anime usually follow the story of an aspiring athlete and how they overcome adversity to achieve their dreams. Representative anime include Yuri!!! On Ice, Haikyu!!, and Blue Lock.
