The Mafia refers generally to the Italian organized crime groups operating in Italy or the United States. They are known for being ruthless, powerful, secretive, and extremely hierarchical. A big boss, supported by close advisors, heads the entire operation from the top, and is the beating heart that pumps out whatever illegal activity serves the ends of the Family. Throughout history, some of these Mafia bosses have made a name for themselves by becoming rich, powerful, and violent. Take a look at these men below!

• Al Capone: One cannot talk about famous mobsters without mentioning Al Capone, who was able to run Chicago with an extreme regime of violence and corruption by being friendly with the mayor and law enforcement. Eventually, his brutal methods led to a turn in public opinion, which developed into his imprisonment on charges of tax evasion, effectively ending his career as a mob boss.^[1]
• Charles “Lucky” Luciano: Lucky Luciano was a crime boss who effectively formed the structure of operation among Mafia organizations working in the United States. His willingness to do whatever it took to achieve his ends and strong, savvy business sense led to his ascendance and control of the criminal underworld of New York City. He eventually established The Commission, which served as a body that would oversee issues of the major crime families operating in the U.S.^[2]
• Frank Costello: Frank Costello was an important collaborator of Lucky Luciano, and the latter’s success led to both financial prosperity and status for Costello when he eventually took over as acting boss of the Luciano crime family. His contribution to pop culture is also not to be overlooked! Costello is the main inspiration behind the patriarch of The Godfather, for his level-headed counsel and influence in the world of crime and power.^[3]
• Carlo Gambino: Carlo Gambino is famous for what is known about him, but perhaps even more for what is not. Though Gambino took over The Commission and made the Gambino family one of the most profitable enterprises in American crime at the time, he kept a low profile and made it difficult for law enforcement to prove his criminal involvement. He died of natural causes, far more than can be said of many of his peers.^[4]
• Albert Anastasia: Known as a fearsome hitman who oversaw Murder Inc., a crime organization responsible for up to 1000 contracted kills, Anastasia also came into his own as a crime boss who headed the Anastasia crime family after the death of his former boss, Vincent Mangano. He was gunned down in a barber shop that shocked and scandalized the nation.^[5]
