IMO –
the International Maritime Organization – is the United Nations specialized agency with responsibility for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine and atmospheric pollution by ships. IMO's work supports the UN sustainable development goals.
Kenya has taken a significant step towards finalizing its National Maritime Security Strategy (NMSS), following an IMO-supported workshop held in Mombasa (6-10 July), under the European Union-funded Safe Seas for Africa (SSA) programme.
The 2026 Gender-inclusive Leadership in Maritime training course, delivered by the World Maritime University (WMU) in partnership with IMO and the Women's International Shipping & Trading Association (WISTA International), concluded on 8 July.
Viet Nam and the Philippines have taken important steps towards preventing marine plastic litter from sea-based sources with the development of their national port waste management plans.
