The Flying Bat Plays Ball

This legend was told by the Muskogee people of the Southeast US and tells how a bat became the only flying mammal.

A long time ago the birds challenged the animals to a game of ball. They divided into two teams: Animals with four feet would play on one team and the birds would play on the other team.

The game began. The raccoon on the animal team tossed the ball into the air. The crow caught it easily and the other birds hooted and chirped. They cheered so loudly that they woke up the bat sleeping in its cave.

The bat followed the cheering sounds and flew to the ball field. The bat went up to the animals' team and said, "I want to play. Can I join the animals?"

"You have wings," said the fox. "You can't be an animal."

"And you don't have four legs," howled the wolf.

The bat flew over to the birds' team.
"You're not a bird!" hooted the owl. "You don't have feathers and you have teeth."

The bat went back to the animals and asked again to join their team. The mouse, about the same size as the bat, convinced the bigger animals to let the bat play. "You can play," growled the bear, "but stay out of my way."

The game began again and the birds took the lead, quickly flying up to catch the ball almost every time.

Finally the bat worked up the courage to act. Every time a bird was about to catch the ball, the bat flew up and grabbed the ball with its teeth, sometimes taking it right out of the bird's beak.

Again and again the bat caught the ball, winning the game for the animals. They agreed that even though the bat had wings, it would always be on the animals' team.
