  • Lol, there are several comments on this post specifically talking about castration. Simply highlighting one aspect of the paradigm does not mean you condone the other, nor does it mean people are ignoring it.

Sexual violence against women is spoken more about because it is much more common than with men. One out of five women are victims or rape or rape attempts, comparatively only one out of thirty-one men have experienced the same. The same goes for cattle, as the vast majority of cattle are females.

Simply stating that fact does not mean people do not care about sexual violence towards men, nor would someone who cares about the suffering of animals condone the morality of the practices in the meat industry when it comes to male cows.

  • I would say that’s an example of perfect being the enemy of good. If someone is making a conscious effort to moderate their consumption of meat then how can that be a bad thing when compared to the vast majority of people who make no effort at all?

Any amount of effort is better than not trying at all. Plus, is wager that the majority of people transition into vegetarianism/veganism, and this may be the first step of that journey. Why would anyone be critical of these people when there are people whose main caloric intake is meat?

  • It’d be nice to be able to walk down a street without making other people uncomfortable because men in general are less assholish than bears.

Eh… The vast majority of encounters with bears are generally with black bears where both sides are usually just scared of each other and scamper away.

I think most men just lack the perspective of just how vulnerable women are compared to men. Imagine if you lived in a world where you were surrounded by dudes the size of your average NFL lineman, and a non insignificant percent of them have a history of sexual violence towards someone your size… You too might be nervous walking in the dark by yourself.

I am 6’3 with a cut weight around 245lb and I have to be mindful about how I carry myself, or how closely I walk near people to not make people of any sex uncomfortable. There’s a reason a big jolly guy is a stereotype, no one is comfortable around a large dude with an attitude.

  • We had red wolves throughout the south.

Which mainly prey upon small mammals like raccoons, possums, and rabbits. They also were never a large enough population to control deer populations even if that was all they were to hunt.

    The northeast had timber wolves.

Again… Eastern wolves were rarely seen south of the Great lakes, and there’s evidence that there were less than 70k prior to Europeans coming to the Americas.

On the other hand pre colonial white tail deer populations are estimated to be a little over 30 million.

  • It’s more because white colonizers killed all the wolves, so deer don’t have as many natural predators anymore.

Wolves were not native to all of north America at the time when settler colonialists came to America. Nor were they ever in the amount of numbers that could control the deer population by themselves. Deer were a staple protein of native American societies and were utilized as free grazing stock animals by the tribal people in the anterior of America.

It’s pretty typical though that you would have heard someone “blame it on the indians” instead of the white settlers…

The native Americans developed the forest of America over thousands of years, and the overpopulation did not become a problem until the colonizers killed the actual predators who were namaging the deer population… The native Americans.

The overpopulation got worse when white settlers expanded westward and killed off wolf populations as wolves were the only predators left to help moderate some of the overpopulation. However the real damage had already been done generations before when disease cut through the native American populations.

  • The problem is that wolves weren’t really native to all the places deer overpopulated in America. The over population of deer wasn’t a natural development, but a purposely implemented design by native populations of America that took place over thousands of years.

Humans hunting deer is really the only solution because humans reshaped the forest ecology to overproduce deer in the first place. A lot of people like to think that prior to European colonization, America had a pristine and untouched forest. In reality native Americans spent thousands of years reshaping the forest to basically become deer factories.

  • There seems to be at least some level of neglect.

Especially since he is claimed to have quite a bit of alpine experience compared to her. That’s really what brings the liability of negligence to the whole scenario.

Alpine hiking at night is already incredibly dangerous, but not ensuring the person with the least amount of experience has the correct equipment and knows how to use it is just wild.

I wonder, though, did she not have a phone? Was there no reception, or why did she not call or signal for help herself?

Well the confusing thing is that they had helicopters overfly them multiple times as they made their climb and both failed to signal and continued their way to the summit. The person on trial claims that she was doing fine until right after the last flyover and then suddenly started to get worse.

As someone with a mild amount of cold weather experience… I don’t really believe this at all. If I were a betting guy I would wager that she was already suffering from the mental affects of hypothermia. You can enter a super suggestive state the colder you get and your mental faculties and decision making ability rapidly deteriorate to the point where you can get lost and just start walking in circles.

Were there other ways to make it through the night?

She did have a bivy sack that could have provided at least a decent amount of shelter, but he didn’t help her set it up before he left her on the mountain.

Tbh it really seems like he was purposely trying to endanger her, or at very least is a huge piece of shit that didn’t care about her well-being. This would be like a scuba diver taking an amateur on a night dive, not teaching them how to operate their regulator, and than abandoning them a hundred feet underwater in the dark. It really is criminal.

  • It’s almost like utilities are a natural monopoly that do not fit within the economic ideology of “free market” capitalism…

People seem to be forgetting that unless green power or nuclear power are socialized projects they would by default have to find a way to capitalize their products by some means. Whether it would be by capitalization via consumption rates, maintenance fees, or even subscription, a private business would have to be able to make ever increasing profits.
