HERMES-SP [HERMES-SP Consortium]
HERMES-SP (High Energy Rapid Modular Ensemble of Satellites Scientific Pathfinder) is a European CubeSat constellation mission developed to test a distributed detection architecture for high-energy astrophysics, focusing on the detection and localisation of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) and electromagnetic counterparts of Gravitational Wave Events (GWEs).
The HERMES-SP mission is coordinated by Dr. Fabrizio Fiore and involves 11 partners from 5 European countries, forming the HERMES-SP Consortium. The project is funded under the EU Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and is supported by the Agenzia Spaziale Italiana (ASI).
The mission consists of a constellation of 3+3 3U CubeSats in low Earth orbit (LEO). Each satellite is equipped with a novel miniaturized detector designed to monitor the X-ray temporal emission of bright transients. The aim is to demonstrate precise event localisation capabilities through a distributed space architecture, providing wide coverage of the sky and rapid timing accuracy.
HERMES-SP serves as a pathfinder for a future constellation capable of real-time GRB localisation, contributing to the field of multi-messenger astrophysics and complementing gravitational wave observatories in the next decade.
