Aether 1 [Kepler]

Kepler Communications Aether satellites are Canadian-built low Earth orbit data relay spacecraft manufactured by Kepler Communications of Canada. They form the Generation 2 optical networking segment of the company�s constellation.

The mission of the Aether satellites is to provide high-bandwidth, low-latency data relay services in low Earth orbit using optical inter-satellite links. The system is designed to overcome the bandwidth, latency, and spectrum constraints of traditional radio-frequency relay by routing data through space rather than relying on frequent ground station contact.

A core objective is real-time support for time-sensitive space applications. These include Earth observation, autonomous spacecraft operations, space-based computing, and defense-related missions. By enabling direct satellite-to-satellite data transfer, the network allows payload data to be aggregated, processed, and routed in orbit before downlink, reducing dependency on terrestrial infrastructure.

The Aether constellation is architected as a mesh network. Data can be dynamically routed across multiple satellites using Internet Protocol networking, enabling resilient connectivity and continuous coverage, including at high latitudes such as the Arctic. The system is designed to interoperate with ground stations and airborne platforms, supporting end-to-end connectivity with sub-second latency.

Kepler Communications is both the satellite manufacturer and system integrator. The Aether series represents a shift from the company�s earlier radio-frequency spacecraft toward larger platforms optimized for optical relay and onboard computing. Laser communications technology is supplied through partnerships with Tesat-Spacecom, part of Airbus Defence and Space.

The satellites employ Tesat SCOT80 and ConLCT80 laser communication terminals. These terminals support bidirectional optical links at data rates of up to 2.5 Gbit/s and are compliant with U.S. Space Development Agency standards. The architecture also supports space-to-ground optical downlinks and space-to-air links, enabling hybrid operational concepts involving aircraft and high-altitude platforms.

The Aether-1 and Aether-2 pathfinders each have a mass of approximately 125 kg, while Aether Tranche 1 production satellites are planned at roughly 260 kg. The platforms are designed for multi-year operation in sun-synchronous low Earth orbits and prioritize optical payload capacity over traditional RF relay systems.

The satellites are equipped for inter-satellite acquisition, tracking, and pointing required for laser communications. Demonstrations have validated IP-based networking in orbit, including file transfers and image relay using standard protocols such as TCP and UDP, without reliance on intermediate ground stations.

The first Aether satellites, Aether-1 and Aether-2, were launched on 11 November 2023 aboard a SpaceX Falcon-9 v1.2 (Block 5) rocket during the Transporter-9 rideshare mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base, California. These spacecraft served as pathfinders for the Generation 2 optical network.

In orbit, the pair successfully demonstrated optical inter-satellite links, with full validation of SDA-compatible acquisition and tracking completed in 2024. These missions confirmed the readiness of the optical relay architecture for operational deployment.

Kepler plans to expand the constellation with Tranche 1, consisting of ten production Aether data relay satellites scheduled for launch in 2026. Together with the pathfinders, these satellites will form the initial operational network, providing continuous optical relay services and establishing the foundation for a larger, focused constellation of 18 spacecraft.
