Designed as a “mid life improvement” to the M4 carbine, the HK M4 development in the early 2000s included many of the features like the short stroke piston that would define the HK 416. When Colt sued HK in 2007 over use of the term “M4”, the companies settled out of court and HK changed the designation of their design to “416”.
