I’d appreciate it if everyone could just stop burning fossil fuels, please. Thank you for your cooperation.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What would you do if our civilization regressed to the Neolithic age due to resource depletion due to global collapse?

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What do you think about the fact that AI blurs the line between reality and fiction and devalues art and real people?
21·5 hours agoI’m surprised that I haven’t yet seen anyone influential claiming that AI is the Antichrist.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•If animals suddenly gained the ability to speak, how would it affect our society?
9·9 hours agoUh huh. Anyway, I guess someone has to link this: https://static1.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Far-Side-Dog-Translator.jpg

Linux@programming.dev•On the unfortunate need for an "age verification" API for legal compliance reasons in some U.S. states
2·10 hours agoSomebody should go ahead and make an “is-user-old” command that just reads from /etc/age.txt and returns YES, NO, or IDK.

Canada@lemmy.ca•U.S. could hold a 'red card' over Canada's Gripen fighter jet option
10·10 hours agoCongratulations on your purchase of the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II! Your new stealth strike fighter will enable you to rain death upon your enemies from afar like never before.
WARNING: Any use of your F-35 in conjunction with non-Lockheed branded aircraft or ground support, against unauthorized targets, or with 3rd-party non-authorized fuel or ink cartridges may impair the normal operation of your aircraft. No user-serviceable parts inside. Only authorized dealerships may repair the F-35. Attempts to disassemble the ECU may result in loss of data. Advertised maintenance costs are typical and may differ from your experience.
The conclusion is correct but you need to show your work a little more.

2·1 day agoI’d probably do it if I were a lemmy user, so long as you can hide upvotes as well.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is your opinion on websites blocking visitors from specific countries (geoblocking) for personal or political reasons?
51·2 days agoWeb sites cannot know the geographic location of all their visitors, and it’s silly of them to pretend otherwise.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is there currently an influx of bots in the Fediverse, or is it just that the usual patriotism is kicking in?
4·2 days agoSome of the bots, on the other hand, are very easily distinguishable from humans. The one who’s profile I checked out was posting well-polished exactly bot-like political memes for the past few months at a rate that would be a full-time job for an unassisted human.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is there currently an influx of bots in the Fediverse, or is it just that the usual patriotism is kicking in?
10·2 days agoI saw a couple that were obviously bots, when I looked at a news-relevant hashtag on mastodon today. I only noticed two, but that’s two more than usual.

Electric Vehicles@slrpnk.net•2026's conflicts are about to make the case for renewables and electric vehicles even more attractive.
71·2 days agoHigher oil prices due to a global carbon tax would be an incentive to move away from fossil fuels. Higher oil prices due to war is just a gift to every petrostate that isn’t directly hit by the war, and is great news for Vladimir Putin and American oil companies. The higher prices, should they persist, will be taken as a market signal to expand production even more. I can already picture Mark Carney and his friends gloating about how Canadian oil and gas exports are even more profitable now.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How bad would something have to be if 99% of the outcomes are good and 1% of the outcomes were disastrous before society banned that thing?
3·3 days agoIt depends on the society you’re talking about, how newsworthy the bad outcomes are considered, and whether or not everyone has unconsciously made a decision to ignore the risks of the thing because we’re all used to it like we are with cars and fossil fuels.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL there's a trend called hobby dogging where people take an imaginary dog through an obstacle course.
5·3 days agoI remember when “dogging” was the hobby everyone was talking about. When was that, 2015 maybe? Good times.

Presenting everything that’s happening as somehow normal — even while sensationalizing it — is what the mass media do now. I don’t mean it’s a conspiracy, it’s just that’s all they know how to do.
