science@lemmy.world•The U.S. spent $30 billion to ditch textbooks for laptops and tablets: The result is the first generation less cognitively capable than their parentsEnglish
3·4 days agoI think that repetition in any form is exceedingly helpful. It probably does help to have neuronal wiring already primed for that type of routine.

8·4 days agoAnecdotally I took paper notes all through college because it allowed me to retain knowledge without studying. When I tried with an iPad as a little faux experiment on myself it didn’t have the same effect. I’d argue that this issue however isn’t from the technology itself but rather how easily you can be distracted when using it. Ultimately this is something super under studied imo and something I was interested in for a while. I’d argue however that it would be better to control for mental illness or stress effects. Considering how established social media is for us Gen Z and how damaging it’s been shown for mental health (as at least one example) I’d wonder how this would affect things. After all long term cortisol exposure is bad for memory if I recall correctly. (if anyone wants source I’ll have to go dig up an old paper I wrote).
Edit: Oh also something obvious I don’t know how much it’s been studied is the short form content and attention span effect.

1·6 days agoI’m a data engineer but I probably dont have enough experience to warrant being looked at by companies abroad at the moment. I’m still in junior territory on paper at least.

3·7 days agoThat’s fair, I’m someone who didn’t particularly like Skyrim and am hoping for better writing and better combat because I liked the overall idea of Skyrim but honestly I’m assuming it’ll be more to what you’re hoping for especially if Starfield is anything to go off of. Man was that game disappointing.
If you’re looking for stuff similar to Polyphia specifically check out Ichika Nito and Marcin if you haven’t listened to either.
Probably Sungazer but Polyphia and Casiopea are close seconds

Fediverse@lemmy.world•FR#153 – What does a Discord replacement look like?English
3·12 days agoI agree with this but why are we all pitching for completely new platforms. Why don’t we all just go and contribute to stoat and implement federation instead of waiting for an entirely new platform to come up. I understand many open source people like fragmentation, but I personally would wish for more concentrated dev time on a single project. Also having one centralized place for most work makes it easier to fork later and have a solid base to work off of instead of a bunch of different ideas over and over

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Does the fact Stoat.chat doesn't have E2EE mean the server owner can read any and all messages, including DMs?English
21·13 days agoYeah that kinda defeats the purpose of a discord replacement for me. Also matrix seems to be a behemoth that integrates super slowly. Stoat does have e2ee planned, so now would be a great time for everyone with skills to contribute. I personally am trying to hack a different desktop frontend because I’m tired of web apps before the api becomes too complex.

If you don’t give them enough time to train then this wouldn’t be as interesting as you think it’d just be a lot of injuries

politics @lemmy.world•Voters are worried about the cost of housing. But Trump wants home prices to keep climbingEnglish
1·17 days agoThanks for the stats! Hm that is truly depressing. Even with better turnout there are so many fricken boomers damn. I guess that makes sense given the generation moniker. Is this based on 2024 data? I’m somewhat inclined to believe that low Gen Z voter turnout is at least partially a symptom of being disengaged from the Democratic Party putting out machine candidates all the time but I of course have no way to quantify that atm.

2·17 days agoCan we get the raw numerical counts for this? We’re comparing percentages which is bad practice. I.e. it wouldn’t matter if 90% of 65+ voters vote if it’s like 1000 people. Turnout isn’t the same as actual votes cast which I think you understand but you didn’t add a source to your “LOT of boomers” claim. Not saying that you’re incorrect but I’d like to see actual numbers if possible
