Buzz is more than just a mascot — he’s an icon. A fixture of Georgia Tech and collegiate athletics, Buzz has been spreading Yellow Jacket pride for more than five decades.
The legacy began in 1972 when student Judi McNair created the first Yellow Jacket costume. In 1980, Buzz became the official Georgia Tech mascot after Richie Bland famously sprinted onto the football field during a pep rally — uninvited, but unforgettable. Since then, dozens of dedicated students have brought Buzz to life, making him an integral part of the Georgia Tech Cheer Team and an official Georgia Tech Athletic Association student-athlete.
THE CHARACTER OF BUZZ
Buzz is athletic, fearless, and full of personality. Whether he’s scaling stadium walls, crowd surfing, or sneaking snacks from the concession stand, Buzz is always up to something. But make no mistake — while he’s known for his pranks and playful nature, he’s deeply committed to the fans. Buzz is always ready for a fan photo-op, high fives and fist bumps, his signature stinger shake, and spreading joy to Yellow Jacket fans of all ages!
A TRADITION OF ENGAGEMENT
Buzz is a staple at every Georgia Tech sporting event, leading traditions like the pregame Buzz Flip, conducting the band at the ¾ mark of every game, and energizing Yellow Jacket fans all game day long!
Outside of athletics, Buzz makes over 400 annual appearances at campus events, community service outings, alumni celebrations, corporate functions, and charity galas — representing Georgia Tech with passion and pride wherever he goes.
A NATIONAL CHAMPION
Each April, Buzz represents Georgia Tech at NCA College Nationals in Daytona Beach, Florida — competing against the top mascots from across the country — and has captured the national championship four times. He won his first two national titles in back-to-back fashion in 2000 and 2001. In 2023, Buzz captured first place for the first time in two decades with his unforgettable Mario-themed routine. He returned to the top in 2025 with a legendary Pirates-themed performance, once again proving that Buzz is a true National Champion!
