That certainly seems to be the trend. Do you mind if I ask what country your from? I assume Australia by the @. Always wanted to visit there.

The only thing worse than giving info to Amazon, is having no security for your home. I have a ring camera that was a gift from my previous employer when I moved states and I’m very glad to have it. It faces my street, where anybody can see anyways so privacy is not a concern. I’d never put ring cameras inside or in the rear of my house, and would rather not use ring but given what a life saver it has been since i bought my house several times, i will not be doin without until I can replace with a offline system. But being able to check in at work is nice, and any security is better than no security. Hell just bolting an old cctv camera to the side of your house without hooking it up is better than nothing.

Yes they can, but most (let’s use Subaru for example) said they had life time fluid despite having a replaceable filter, as they don’t give a shit if it grenades at 100k miles cuz if it’s out of warranty you have to buy a transmission from them! They later back tracked and said oh yea actually u should service your transmission. And this isn’t just a cvt issue, bmw was doing the filled for life crap back in the early 2000s. Automatic transmissions are hydrolic devices, and any hydrolic device is only as good as it’s hydrolic fluid.

Cars today are simply not more reliable. I have drug a 48 Willy’s out of a barn that had been sitting for decades, adjusted the points and drained the fuel and put in new. Marvel mystery oil down the plug holes and bar by hand to ensure not seized and cleaned out the carb and she fired right up. Old cars may require more frequent service due to old mechanical systems, but they will far outlive anything made in the last 20 years. Automobile reliability peaked between 1990 and 2005 or so, anything made after is over complex (think can bus, one frayed wire and ur cars whole network goes down and immobilized you) and anything earlier still needs frequent attention yet very robust in design. Long service intervals =/= reliability, their just making them disposables after 100k miles now. See: low tension piston rings, cvt transmissions, “lifetime” fluids (no such thing…), carbon issues on intake valves and engine internals from direct injection and overstated service intervals to keep projected ownership costs down, oh I could go on and write a book about how new cars ain’t shit.

We have been propping u domestic car manufacturers since they started making cars domestically. Pretty rich for a “capitalist free market” if you ask me. I forget we don’t get to be part of socialist America if we aren’t billionaires…

Car prices were on the rise long before the tarrif crap. Yes the tariffs continue to make it worse, but this was a trend already! As long as people are willing to pay 50 grand for a rav4 with leather seats they will continue to pump their numbers up. I know VERY few people that drove a car more than 10 years old, their afraid it will break down on them when the reality is their newest 700$ /mo POS techno trash on wheels will be dead long before my 87 gives up the ghost.

Honestly, I love having a w11 rig AND a laptop with zorin and a laptop with w10 and a old all in one with mint. Variety is the spice of life, I need a Windows laptop to tune my cars ecus. Simply not able to do it in Linux, but my Linux laptop has stuff my windows doesn’t. Real ones can’t just live with one os B)

The support is getting better by the minute! I do think steam os has helped catapult Linux ahead from where it was just 5 years ago in terms of hardware support

No kidding! I never feel like I have enough time, always feel like I’m behind on all my projects and spreading myself thin. When I had less money and less projects and didn’t own a house I played so much more video games and messed around Linux installing new distro every couple weeks on my old rigs or laptops that had fallen into my lap. Now my times all tied up with all the messes I have gotten myself into, speaking of which I should probably be putting the new exhaust fan in my bathroom that’s been sitting new in the box for 6 months or something instead of fucking off in the fediverse :'(

No kidding! W11 and w10 always worked with all of my printers (Canon) out of the box, once the printer was connected to WiFi they always just picked them up and worked! Last time I tried to get a cheap wifi card (Linksys) to work on Ubuntu however, not so lucky lol.

I’m white and I caught that shit almost 20 years ago because I was in an ESL program (despite English being my native tongue) because I moved to the states from Italy. Mind you I lived in USA before that and am natural born citizen, just father was stationed in Italy so I lived there for 3 years. Moved to USA in time for 2nd grade so had never been in an American school system yet. Mother is an immigrant sure but they didn’t even know that, just saw me in the “Mexican kids class” and struggling with reading and spelling so I was one of “them”. Mind you I’m talking about early elementary school, so kids just parroting and learning what their parents say at home. I can only imagine what darker skin people have to deal with from racist pricks raising racist children.

This is the same crowd that was saying to run over protesters for being in the road, now crying about a fed having a car driven in his vicinity.

Running windows is like playing with an action figure. You take it out of the box and it does what it’s supposed to. Linux I consider more like a Lego set. Sure you have to put some stuff together before you really play with it, but it’s YOUR creation by the time your done with it and you can modify to suit your use case. If you have no interest in tinkering with ur OS windows or Mac is just a better option, if you want to tailor your experience how you’d like Linux is the way. I run W11 on my gaming PC because I don’t have time to mess with it and experiment anymore. I have played with so many Linux distros but never had one work flawless out of the gate, and always reserved it for my secondary fuck around rigs because if I wanted to fuck around I could but I do want something that i can press the power button and evrything works fine without use of my brain after working a 13 hour day where i might get lucky to play for 40 mins lol. My fuck around time these days is totally sapped by project vehicles and house issues the last think I wanna do is play around in terminal when I have 10k other more important things to do :c

True that, but then that service shop could only work on vehicles that are designed to be compatible with that service center. It honestly wouldnt surprise me to see that sort of thing in a few decades for day some Tesla nonsense that they don’t want mechanics touching anyways.

Yea it’s funny I’ve asked the community before whats the best Linux distro for XYZ and have had all sorts of responses. It took running mint, manjaro, ubunto, pop, tried arch, to figure out that it’s a ridiculous question. The community can only help you pick one to start with, but given there’s 3 real bases and thousands of choices off each base it’s quite frankly up to preference for the most part what Linux distro will work best for you!

As you should, your mechanics aren’t typically paid to give a shit! Do everything you can on your own I bet you paid for most of ur tools and still saved money on the first 3 things u did if u count what you’d have paid in labor. That and it’s good to know ur way around what’s likely one of the most valuable assets you own that sees daily use. Being useless is a luxury for the rich!

Well the article clearly states Ford is complaining that he cannot fill 5,000 mechanic positions so I figured he’s talking about mechanics, especially since he’s been in the news for the last 3+ months crying about these high paying tech positions that don’t exist LOL. The ad may say u can make 100j a year but that’s only possible if you make more than 40 hours a week on flat rate, so these job ads are misleading. Sure if you get nothing but gravy work because your buddies with the service advisor you can make that money, but fuck up with the shop politics or get a rash of shit jobs and a slow month and your not making what they advertise.

Repetitive factory assembly of one vehicle and automotive repair share just about nothing besides that a vehicle is involved in both. This is like saying a robot could replace a tailor because robots make clothes in factories, this is something that only makes sense if you don’t know anything about either lol.

Flat rate encourages bad behaviour and has ruined the automotive field for both consumers and workers, the only winners are the owners fucking us both!
