  • Even with insurance, many plans have a deductible that requires you to pay the first couple grand on your own before they’ll cover anything, and even once you’ve paid that amount they will require you to cover a couple hundred per day of hospital stay (doubled for two patients: mom + baby).

It is entirely normal to pay thousands of dollars for a normal uncomplicated hospital birth even with insurance.

  • Electrical Engineer here, that corrosion doesn’t look too bad, I wouldn’t assume it’s the issue but it’s not impossible it might be a contributing factor since corrosion on connections can cause heat and heat can trip breakers.

If the breaker trips are happening when you do something like turn on the oven or the toaster then it’s just a matter of the electric service to the house being too small for the apartments loads. This can happen if the apartment originally had gas appliances that were later switched to electric or something else (like a hot tub) was later added to increase the electric load beyond what was originally designed for.

If the trips dont seem to correspond to anything you’re doing with electric appliances, then the equipment may be going bad or there may be an intermittent short. Both of which are not something you would be able to troubleshoot (and frankly, if you don’t know what you’re doing, even opening up a panelboard like you’ve done can be deadly).

Either way I highly recommend you either pressure your landlord to bring in an electrician, or pay for one out of pocket if thats not an option.

  • As a parent to a 5 and a 2 yo, once kids can communicate they can often be reasoned with. Most things that I ask them as a parent are things they dont want to do, like brush their teeth or don’t throw their toys or share with their sister. As a parent it’s my job to make them understand WHY those things are important and worth doing.

Brush your teeth so they dont decay and need to be cut out.

Dont throw toys because they will break and get thrown away or be taken away for everyones safety.

Share with your sister because if you cant cooperate with people they wont cooperate with you when you want them to.

Breaking down the reasons to language a kid can understand is generally successful and certainly much better than trying to force your kids to comply with expectations based on nothing more than “because I said so”, which was a common refrain said to me and my siblings growing up.

  • Sorry, did you just say “I wonder if the fossil fuel industry has home solar in its sights”?

Perhaps you haven’t been reading the news, but Trumps “One Bill Beautiful Bill” abuptly ended tax credits for home solar a few weeks ago, between that and his existing tariffs on solar panels, the breakeven period for a home solar setup is now decades.

The residential solar industry is in freefall right now. Thousands of installers are losing or have already lost their jobs.

I guess I take it for granted that this is common knowledge since I work in the industry, but it’s unbelievably bad right now.

  • Remote desktop support is buggy on gnome and nearly non-existant on other DE’s, which speaks to how poor a job wayland does at managing functions between DE’s, where each individual DE has to build their own solution for basic functions, further fragmenting development efforts.

Then there’s accessibility functions, which wayland breaks almost by design by denying apps access to each other. Even something as simple as an on screen keyboard becomes nearly impossible to implement.

Any software thats being pushed to users as the “main” experience, should not break things as common and fundemental as remote desktop or onscreen keyboards. Great way to drive away potential users switching from windows 10.

  • I was the first in my workplace to take paternity leave when it became law in my state. I didn’t take it in one chunk, but used every single day I was entitled to. I got many similar comments as you from older guys, and I believe they came from a place of jealousy at worst and self-rationalization at best, since those people weren’t afforded the same rights when they had kids.

Pay then no attention, the first few months as a dad to a new kid are some of the most important and precious moments you’ll ever have, and if you miss them you will never ever get a do over. Take every second you can without an ounce of shame.

You may also find yourself setting an example, as I noticed none of the new Dads in my workplace after me had any reservations about taking their full leave, and I work in construction with some needlessly macho guys.

    ITT people simp for corporations.

I’m sure daddy supermarket chain loves it when you offer your free labor to him after he’s finished ripping you off with his shrinkflation and grocery prices rising faster than inflation.

As a union household we don’t steal work from unionized grocery workers. Not even something as small as cart wrangling. Anyone who does is a scab.

  • The issue itself is nuanced, unfortunately the debate is not.

Transwomen who’ve only gone through female puberty (i.e. transitioned as minors or went on puberty blockers) are going to be physically on the same level as ciswomen.

Transwomen who’ve been through both puberties are going to be pretty close to the physical abilities of the average ciswomen after a few years on estrogen, though there are some permanent effects of testosterone that will remain, like build size.

Thats to say nothing of the fact that dividing sports along gender is somewhat arbitrary to begin with, while the average female athlete may be smaller and weaker than the average male athlete, there is still plenty of overlap, and it would really make more sense to divide sports along different criteria, like weight classes or some other more fair metric.

  • I scrolled past, saw the text, and the reward circuits in my brain went “wait… thats spacetime’s font!”.

Crazy that this show has been going for 9 years. Video game tie-in’s are fun, but it’s just so much better now.

Watching the “does the universe create itself” video, shortly after playing The Outer Wilds just… broke me.

Literally mid-watch right now on the latest quantum gravity episode.

Cannot recommend this series enough if you have any science/physics interest
