  • Great post which gives a lot of inspiration!

Since you mentioned the fairphone 6, I thought I’d give you my two cents on that topic:

Switched over to a Fairphone 6 about half a year ago (pretty soon after the release). Wanted to get the Murena - e/OS version but since the stock Android was cheaper and quicker for delivery I went with that.

At home, I flashed e/OS myself on the phone after checking everything worked initially (especially phone services).

And what can I say - about a half year later I’m still super happy with it. About 60% of the apps I use are from F-Droid, the other few over AppLounge (Playstore-Mirror) with an anonymous Google-account (very easy to use, works automatically and is preinstalled on e/OS). I should say, my goal switching from a ‘normal’ Android phone was to degoogle at the same time, which worked well with the fp6. No issues with calls, screen, battery, camera, Apps etc, only thing I needed was a Type-C to Aux adapter (since my last phone still had a 3.5 mm jack).

You need to get used to the volume rocker placement - was taking screenshots in the beginning all the time :D But other than that, I have no regrets. Even dropped it a few times without a case and its sturdy! I can definetely recommend it :) (My parents’ next smartphone will be a FP, already influenced them haha)

  • Now reading it, I never directly realized it being this (wrong) way in the english language. In German the equivalent term would be “Hals über Kopf” (Neck over head) which made sense for a feeling of the world being upside down. Funny that in English it is actually the “normal” worldview - at least how the modern expression goes.

Male/Female Vocals).

  • Since you mentioned Fairphone, another option as custom ROM would be e/OS which is not only supported but also comes pre-installed on fairphones (if you choose so). Sure, there are differences to Graphene, but I installed e/OS on my fp6 a few weeks ago and Im super happy with it - no more Google! And battery performance is pretty decent, too.

Tbf, never been an Apple guy, so I cant say how the switch would be for you, but coming from Xiaomi-Android it felt really refreshing :D

  • Asked myself the same question last week. Bought the AOSP Version and did the flashing myself - worked out fine! Just be careful if you want to return to Stock Android: You need to be sure not to revert to a ROM with an older security patch date than currently installed (See anti-rollback feature and the remarks in the official instructions). This could potentially brick your phone. Mine shipped with a patch from May 2025, so flashing to a ROM with June 2025 security patch (e/OS 3.02) worked fine. Wanted to save those 50€, too :D
