Technology@lemmy.zip•IBM and Moderna have simulated the longest mRNA pattern without AI — they used a quantum computer insteadEnglish
2·6 months agoThis article is very poorly written. It conflates protein structure with RNA structure. Proteins are polymers of 20 types of amino acids with comparatively widely varied chemical properties and structures. RNA is a polymer of 4 types of nucleotides with very similar chemical properties and structures. Predicting the secondary structure (structure on a local scale) of RNA is essentially a solved problem on traditional computers and clever but human written algorithms up to several thousand nucleotides.
The novelty here is an iterative increase in complexity in what can be tackled by quantum computing.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are your favorite "Bob Ross" YouTube channels? (see body)
1·11 months agoI saw a lot of channels that sprung to mind already posted. But I want to strongly recommend Thomas Shahan for super chill bug photography and mellow voice overs. Worth checking out even if you’re not into macro photography.
I also have a V2.4 and it’s the most reliable printer I own. It’s the second printer I built and the third I’ve owned. And having built it from scratch, I know if anything breaks, I can fix it. I added an in-chamber carbon filter, a mod that let’s me probe the bed with the nozzle itself, and some custom designed magnetic attachments for the side panels. Oh and a kinematic bed mod – this let’s the bed expand with heat while keeping the center in the same spot.
It’s fantastic and I regularly print PLA, PETG, and ABS. I do like tinkering, but I will not touch this one because it’s such a reliable workhorse. The one last mod I would contemplate is a way to wipe the nozzle automatically.
Same, it’s so awful.

News@lemmy.world•Donald Trump vows to impose 25% tariff on all products from Canada and Mexico
6·1 year agoMy betting is he’ll relax tariffs on companies if they pay him.

News@lemmy.world•Florida Surgeon General opposes fluoride in water as he is eyed for Trump admin
10·1 year agoIt’s not super clear from the graph alone what’s going on here so Iwanted to add some context.
1960 is when Australia fluoridated their water supply. So the data show that no matter how old you were when it happened, it cut the number of decayed, filled, or missing teeth per person in half.
Wash your print surface with dish soap and water and dry with a paper towel or fresh towel. Avoid touching or contaminating the surface once clean and dry.
If that doesn’t work, get some magigoo

SpaceX@sh.itjust.works•F-22 Raptors Chase SpaceX Rocket Over NASA-Cape Canaveral Space Force Station -Exclusive Cockpit POVEnglish
18·2 years ago“Chase” is kind of a strong word. Still cool tho.
Yeah, female Dobson fly.
Looks like some type of weevil to me.
DangerBit@lemmy.worldtoHome Improvement@lemmy.world•How to get wood sealant off of a window
3·2 years agoProbably have to scrape it off with a razor blade. You might try acetone as a last ditch solvent method, but that’s it’s own bag of worms.
Those are a lot of fun to play with! Glad you got it working! Textured PEI sheets are great for PLA in general. Usually a good wipe with isopropyl alcohol before a print works to keep the adhesion strong. I find every once in a while actually washing and scrubbing it with dish soap and hot water is needed to refresh the PEI surface.

News@lemmy.world•Alabama station in disbelief after 200-foot radio tower stolen
93·2 years agoWell done friend, we’ll done.
Water, oil, salt, flour is basically the recipe for crackers.
You need to add leavening and use lard or vegetable shortening.

[Dormant] Electric Vehicles (Moved to [email protected])@lemmy.world•Auto dealers up campaign urging Biden administration to halt EPA tailpipe emission limits regulation
2·2 years agoYeah, just having direct sales as a possibility would let them reach the demand everywhere it is, not just in the few markets to which they are sending these vehicles.
Kinda the whole amazon model, you can afford to stock all sorts of weird niche items because you can reach the handful of people that desperately want it.

[Dormant] Electric Vehicles (Moved to [email protected])@lemmy.world•Auto dealers up campaign urging Biden administration to halt EPA tailpipe emission limits regulation
16·2 years agoThis is crazy to me. About a year ago I was trying to buy an ev or plug in hybrid and just could not find any. None of the dealerships around me had any.
Sure wish we could abolish the whole middle man dealership model we’re legislated into and just order what we want directly.
