I’m looking for some advice, it’s been a few years since I was into sim racing (AC, PC2, iracing), now I’m looking to get back into sims - mostly offline at first. I have an older Logi G27 wheel & pedals and have recently moved to Linux (Bazzite).
From what I understand, these should work in Linux, however I’m interested in upgrades to make things better. The G27 is fine, wheel is ok and does the job for now (vs my skill level) but the brake pedal is my biggest issue in being consistent.
It’s been a while since I’ve been up to play on hardware, is it worth finding a loadcell brake/mod for the G27 considering the age of this kit, or is it better to replace the entire pedal set with something newer?
I have not tried them myself, because I own Heusinkvelds, but I know that the Simjack pedals are actually working on Linux. All those Heusinkveld clones (Simjack, Simsonn, Simruito) are often recommended because of their high value for the low price, so that’s what I would go for. You also can check on the Linux Simracing Matrix channel: https://matrix.to/#%2F!iDfbActWrqjZKJomiv%3Amatrix.org%3Fvia=matrix.org&via=tchncs.de&via=synapse.brak.space
For my experience with the Heusinkveld pedals on Linux: You don’t have to have any software constantly running. I set them up on Windows years ago when I was still dual-booting, but haven’t used the Heusinkveld software ever since. No idea if you can get the software running with Wine for initial setup.
Edit: Concerning wheels, you can also check out this compatibility list: https://github.com/JacKeTUs/linux-steering-wheels I was racing with a Logitech G29 for years myself before I made the switch to a Moza base last year. There is no extra list for pedals because they are basically just stupid 3-axis controllers. If you really want a native Linux software to calibrate your wheels, there is one for Moza pedals: https://github.com/Lawstorant/boxflat
Fantastic, thanks for your input!
I don’t understand why all this info is hidden on discord/matrix. Yesterday, I installed AMS2 on my main partition and tried to find how to use my hardware. Info on my wheelbase (Moza R9) is easily available and getting it recognized and configured with Boxflat was a breeze. But nothing for my SimJack pedals. Pretty sure I only need some udev rules, but nothing publicly visible. I’m kinda sad I need to create yet another account just to get this information.
There is a lot of trial and error on the server, so a lot of the discussion is not really suited for something like Lemmy.
But someone on Matrix asked if there is a wiki, a couple of days ago. Maybe that would actually be useful.
Interested in any feedback too. I have modded load-cell Simjack Pro pedals which are awesome. I haven’t tested them yet on Linux as I race exclusively in VR and my crappy CV1 has too many issues on Linux to be usable. When I upgrade to the Steam Frame, I will need to make them work.
