… um … is that big donate to lemmy banner going to stay on the home page?
If so, I’ll build a ublock rule for it. No big deal. Just trying to figure out whats going on.
I absolutely think its a good idea to donate to lemmy dev, but I don’t want to see the huge banner every time I refresh.
The banner went away. I’ve got eviltoast whitelisted in ublock, and no banner. Ok.
I’m not sure if it was the migration or the update that triggered it, but I saw it for the first time too and its a bit… big.
If its a one time per user thing, its probably okay. I get that they would like to get paid. If its a Wikipedia style of yelling for money every page load, I’ll have more of an issue with it
Ya. You know, it made me curious.
Don’t they have some donation channel from instances running their software?
As an instance operator are you encouraged to donate to a similar fund?It seemed to me that begging to individual users with a huge freakin banner might get an initial wave of funds, and then people are gonna block the huge freakin banner. End of story.
But if the devs were able to establish and leverage a relationship with instance operators, and possibly federate the fund raising process a bit, well that would seem to be a larger possible source, sustainable, and far more in the spirit of things.
In effect, they’d do a yearly or quarterly round of begging from the instances.
If the instances chose to, they would support the funds push, possibly some banners or maybe even sticky posts.
Be transparent, report the donations and how much, so we get some idea where the money is actually going.I think lemmy would go for that shit. I did not care for the big banner. Sour taste …
