Microsoft ended activation over the phone.

That’s fine, I don’t know anyone who ever used it.

Just use Microsoft’s own activation scripts.

Over the phone was useful for activating stuff without internet. Like VMs that you dont want on the internet. It was basically required for XP boxes, as they would lock up after 30 days.

Haven’t needed to use it for the more modern windows, I just left them unactivated.

But XP never really needed actual activation, it used a key.

So long as you had one valid key you’re good forever.

In my career and private lab, I’ve built literally thousands of machines - never once had to call MS to activate.

Maybe I’m mis-remembering, but I definitely needed to call to activate XP. I have an MSDN account, so had keys, but definitely needed to call a few times. Its a pretty unforgettable experience. Maybe it was something to do with the msdn keys not being accepted?

You could only activate the same key several times before you had to call.

That could be it, but doesnt make sense for an air-gapped box?

I think it does this even if you’re offline

Maybe its just the default for offline activation of volume licence keys?

Really? Because hundreds of VM’s I’ve built used the same key.

XP never validates the key online as far as I can tell.

Ugh I fucking hate Microsoft so much. Why does it exist.

Hey, you. Yeah, you. The person who currently is reading this and works for Microsoft. Fuck you. Quit your job and find something else.
