Hello Fediverse! We’re reaching the end of the year, and each year I like to try and give a little bit back to support the causes I care about, and the organizations I rely on.

This year I want to do something a little different. In honor of the US denouncing the UN Sustainable Development Goals, I want to try and donate to causes spanning all 17 SDGs, and I’m looking for recommendations!

For reference, the SDGs are

  • No poverty (SDG 1)
  • Zero hunger (SDG 2)
  • Good health and well-being (SDG 3)
  • Quality education (SDG 4)
  • Gender equality (SDG 5)
  • Clean water and sanitation (SDG 6)
  • Affordable and clean energy (SDG 7)
  • Decent work and economic growth (SDG 8)
  • Industry, innovation and infrastructure (SDG 9)
  • Reduced inequalities (SDG 10)
  • Sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11)
  • Responsible consumption and production (SDG 12)
  • Climate action (SDG 13)
  • Life below water (SDG 14) (✓ - Reef Check Foundation)
  • Life on land (SDG 15)
  • Peace, justice, and strong institutions (SDG 16)
  • Partnerships for the goals (SDG 17)

Some of my go-to charities tackle a few of these, e.g., my local food bank (SDG 1 & 2), Médecins Sans Frontières (SDG 3), Save The Manatee Club (SDG 14), Asante Africa Foundation (SDG 4 & 10), NPR & ACLU (SDG 16) but I want to hit all 17!

This is a new community, but if this post gains any traction I plan to donate $50 each to the top 5 suggested charities. Please share your recommendations, preferably along with which SDG you feel they align with.

donation notes:

  • Will choose charities from top 5-ish unique comments.
  • Must be registered 501c3.
  • It’s my money so I’ll ignore any trolls/charities I’m morally opposed to.
  • My employer matches giving so it’ll actually be $100 to each charity.
