Hi everyone. It has been a while since I started using Linux, so I got at least a nice amount of knowledge on Linux and shell but I can be considered as new when it comes to Nix. I am learning Nix and I have learned enough to move to flakes and set up a very basic home manager configuration but my setup is probably really weird compared to NixOS masters. The problem is my laptop shuts itself down in heavy tasks like gaming (My laptop is trash lol). I assume this is because of overheating because the heat goes really up whenever this happens. Do you guys have any solutions to that? And my second problem is I don’t really know how to set up drivers on NixOS but I can tell something is wrong about my gpu drivers. My gpu is AMD Radeon 610M [Integrated] (its pretty trash yeah but its a school laptop) and I want to set up drivers and be able to play games with Proton (So I gotta enable this 32bit thing as well). My cpu is AMD Ryzen 3 7320U (8) @ 4.15 GHz and I have no idea if my cpu needs extra drivers. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks for reading

I decided to switch to NixOS on my desktop and so far it’s been great, I love being able to build out my config in the Nix file, but there is one thing I’ve not been able to figure out how to change. After a period of inactivity, the computer suspends (or hibernates?) and basically turns off (all the fans and lights turn off and it disconnects from the network, I don’t know if it’s saving the state in RAM of the drive). How do I get it to not do that and just lock the desktop and turn off the screen after inactivity? I’m using KDE Plasma and I’ve tried different kinds of configurations that build successfully but still don’t prevent it from going offline.

I’m starting to have a lot of flake inputs in my flake.nix file, and it’s starting to get really cluttered. I’m wondering if there’s a way to separate my inputs into multiple files so it looks cleaner. I’ve tried to look it up but couldn’t really find anything abt it

I have never installed a nix package on Steam Deck under SteamOS before. I followed his instructions from this website , everything is ok without problem, then I installed an app with this command nix-env -iA nixpkgs.mullvad-vpn. When I finish installing an app, I open Mullvad GUI, I see a message

I’ve been trying to run native linux games with lutris but can’t get it to work. As far as ik, i can either use steam-app in my termianl, which works, or I can use nix-ld which i did setup and also works when running the game’s executable from the terminal

I learned how to do this recently, and I wanted to share. Once you know what to do VPN confinement is easy to set up on NixOS.

She tried everything to pull me out. “Let’s go for a coffee,” she said. “Sorry, I’m debugging why my system rebuild keeps pulling a different glibc version.” “Maybe just watch a movie together?” “Good idea! First I need to package mpv myself, I don’t trust the default derivation…" Then came the final blow: One night, she found me at 3 a.m., half-naked, whispering into the void: “If I can just get this flake to build… I can declare our entire marriage in a flake.nix…" She stared at me — a broken woman surrounded by YAML, JSON, and cryptic build errors. “I married a person, not a package manager.” she said. She left a sticky note on the monitor: “I’m going to find someone who just uses Arch. They might be unstable, but at least they notice when I’m in the room." I still wonder… Can I nixos-rebuild switch into a timeline where she stayed? (I miss you Hatsune)

Almost every NixOS tutorial I encounter, be that blog or video, says to use Flakes and Home Manager. While that definitely speaks to the value of these tools, I find myself, instinctually, wanting to avoid them. I’ve attempted to get them working multiple time, and encountered more issues than they solved, for me. I interpret this to mean my knowledge and/or use case of NixOS is not ready for me to use these tools effectively. On top of that, something about a set of files that could all be put into a single unified config appeals to me (which flakes/hm can probably do too, but hopefully to get my vibe).

I have installed NixOS on WSL behind Appgate, that runs a proxy and replaces the SSL certificates of the sites, I am visiting.

I am pretty happy with my configs now, with home manager but no flakes so far. I am, however, annoyed by all the dotfiles that I didn’t define, and I’m worried how many other files are laying around without getting imperatively defined.

In my previous post, I asked whether a certain subvolume layout would work well for NixOS, and if not, how it could be adapted.

I recently reinstalled my nixos (long story). but for some reason, tailscale refuses to install. when i reinstalled, i just copied over my configuration.nix to replace the default one from the install (not sure if that is part of the problem?). or maybe its just broken right now, and i need to wait it out?

I'm on a fresh installation with KDE. Kate is available, but what's the best way to get (n)vim up and running, or better yet, Helix? (I'm new to Nix. I do have a good amount of Linux experience though.)

Hi, I'm currently using a script to update my various NixOS hosts from a central machine, using the nh utility (https://github.com/nix-community/nh). By default, the command nh os switch . -H "..." --target-host "..." outputs the dependency graph of the build, as well as all the build logs. I like the dependency graph, however the build logs tend to push the diff result of the previous builds off of the terminal screen, so I have to watch the whole time in case I miss it. I've tried using the --no-nom flag, however this removed the dependency graph also. Is there a way in bash of selectively suppressing the build logs but not the dependency graph? Or is this an issue to raise with the project itself? The full bash script I'm using is shown below:

I have a folder with some cool nixos configurations that i ripgrep through when im looking for inspiration on how to do things. Anyone got recommendations for configs where people do cool stuff? Feel free to drop your configs as well, its just fun to look at other people's systems!

I'm working on switching over to NixOS on my desktop and one of the last things I haven't got fully working is my neovim config. My LSP's are able to start, and all of them work fine except for clangd. For some reason, it can't find C/C++ header files for any installed libraries. I have all of the LSPs themselves installed through Mason in Neovim, and I have programs.nix-ld.enable = true enabled so they can be run correctly.

For example, compose2nix lets you build nixos configuration for containers defined in a docker compose compose.yml. But this step happens offline. You have to first ad hoc generate the config from the compose.yml and then use that generated output in your config.

I'm quite new to Nixos and want to install Steam Link. Has anyone ever installed it? There is a fairly old discussion on Github about it that mentions some appimage but there does not seem to be a package. Any ideas how to approach this?

I want to edit .desktop files of some nixpkgs for customization, but they are located in /run/current-system/sw/share/applications.. and are readable only.
