The North American Nietzsche Society held the first of its stand-alone conferences at Hunter College’s Roosevelt House in New York City on October 14–17, 2016. The three-day event featured invited keynotes by Bernard Reginster, Christopher Janaway, and Beatrix Himmelmann. In addition, the program committee selected seven blind-reviewed abstracts from a pool of over sixty submissions. Despite the recent increase in interest in philosophy about ignorance, little attention has been paid to the question of what makes it possible for a being to become aware of their own ignorance. In this paper, I try to provide such an account by arguing that, for a being to become aware of their own ignorance, they must have the mental capacity to represent something as being unknown to them. For normal adult humans who have mastered a language, mental representation (...) of an unknown is enabled by forming linguistic expressions whose content is grasped, but whose referent is unknown. I provide a neo-Fregean, a neo-Russellian, and then a unified account of this. On that basis, I then argue further that the content of ignorance can always be captured by a question. I then distinguish between propositional ignorance and non-propositional ignorance and argue that propositional ignorance attributions can be of three types, that-ignorance, whether-ignorance, and fact-ignorance. I conclude by arguing that the acquisition of truths, even when it yields knowledge that is certain, does not always eliminate one’s ignorance and that there is a degree of ignorance in almost everything we claim to know. Developing original accounts of the many aspects of belief, On Believing puts the believer at the heart of the story. Developing a novel account of the normativity of belief, Hunter argues that the ethics of belief concern how a believer ought to be positioned in a world of possibilities.

Rival Enlightenments, first published in 2001, is a major reinterpretation of early modern German intellectual history. Ian Hunter approaches philosophical doctrines as ways of fashioning personae for envisaged historical circumstances, here of confessional conflict and political desacralization. He treats the civil philosophy of Pufendorf and Thomasius and the metaphysical philosophy of Leibniz and Kant as rival intellectual cultures or paideiai, thereby challenging all histories premised on Kant's supposed reconciliation and transcendence of the field. This study reveals the extraordinary historical (...) self-consciousness of the civil philosophers, who repudiated university metaphysics as inimical to the intellectual formation of those administering desacralized territorial states. The book argues that the marginalization of civil philosophy in post-Kantian philosophical history may itself be seen as a continuation of the struggle between the rival enlightenments. In ‘The Revisionist Psychoanalysis’, Adorno criticizes the neo-Freudian psychoanalysis for losing the critical edge of Freud’s theory with regard to social critique. Neo-Freudians whom Adorno calls ‘revisionists’ criticize Freud for his ‘mechanical’ views of the human psyche and for his over-emphasis on sexual libido. They reverse Freud’s dictum – ‘where id was, there ego shall be’ – by stressing the importance of development of the ego, and thus that of its adaptive functions. For revisionists, the aim of psychoanalytic practice is (...) to help analysands be better adapted to their social environment. According to Adorno, the revisionist psychoanalysis is suspected of conformism, and implicitly advocating an ideology that what is existent is the best of all possible worlds. The emphasis on adaptation actually weakens the ego instead of strengthening it – leaving it vulnerable to the whim of social conditions, and that of instinctual impulses. Most importantly, it weakens individuals’ ability to think critically and makes them susceptible to ideological and psychological manipulation against their own rational interests. (shrink)

Ineffability—that which cannot be explained in words—lies at the heart of the Christian mystical tradition. It has also been part of every discussion of religious experience since the early twentieth century. Despite this centrality, ineffability is a concept that has largely been ignored by philosophers of religion. In this book, Bennett-Hunter builds on the recent work of David E. The mild and mellow queen of the "Court of Silence" is graceful, calm, and, most important of all, silent. In this characterization, an idealized woman is defined as necessarily rhetorically meek. By worshiping "the quiet woman," influential proponents of public opinion such as The Ladies' Repository reinscribed for a postbellum readership a definition of true womanhood that equated silence with feminine virtue and enthusiastic vocality with its opposite. In their coverage of deportment in all areas of life, conduct manuals promised the aspiring middle-class American an education in the home in the culturally valuable skills of public speaking and writing. 2 The collective enterprise of the parlor rhetoric movement and conduct literature in particular was to offer happiness and success to those who would follow certain rules. Enormously popular in the postbellum period and well into the turn of the century, conduct manuals argued a conservative gender agenda that appealed to the middle-class readers of a nation who seemed eager to accept the idea that correct deportment in daily life could help to restore the social calm the postwar nation longed for. This study investigates the ethical climate types presented in the Korean tourism industry, the differences in the perceptions of these ethical climate types based on individual/organizational characteristics, and the influence of ethical climate types based on job satisfaction/organizational commitment. Empirical findings of this study identify six ethical climate types and demonstrate significant difference and significant influence of the proposed relationships. This research contributes to the existing body of academic work by using empirical data collected from 820 respondents across 14 companies (...) within the Korean tourism industry, to demonstrate the relationship between actual ethical climate types and ethical climate related factors. The findings of this study identify the new factor ‹moral caring,’ which describes an environment characterized by decisions that maximize collective interest, but based on an individual employee’s personal values and ethics. Such a factor has important implications for the service industry, where face-to-face encounters typify the relationship between employee and consumer. (shrink)

Advocacy is an important concept in nursing practice; it is frequently used to describe th nurse-client relationship. The term advocacy, however, is subject to ambiguity of interpretation. Such ambiguity was evidenced recently in criticisms levelled at the nursing profession by hospital ethicist Ellen Bernal. She reproached nursing for using 'patient rights advocate' as a viable role for nurses. We maintain that, for nursing, patient advocacy may encompass, but is not limited to, patient rights advocacy. Patient advocacy is not merely the (...) defence of infringements of patient rights. Advocacy for nursing stems from a philosophy of nursing in which nursing practice is the support of an individual to promote his or her own well-being, as understood by that individual. It is an ethic of practice. La défense des malades joue un grand rôle dans la pratique des infirmiers/ères. Le terme est souvent utilisé pour définir les rapports entre malades et soignants. Le mot 'defénse' pourtant, peut être mal compris. Une ambiguïté était évidente récemment dans la critique de la profession infirmière faite par la philosophe éthique Ellen Bernal. Elle reproche à la profession d'utiliser le terme 'avocat des droits des malades' pour désigner le rôle primordial des infirmiers/ères. ABSTRACT Philosophy is generally identified with free and open-ended enquiry, grounded in universal reason, and capable of subjecting all other forms of knowledge to critical interrogation. At the same time, philosophy only exists in the form of particular schools: Platonic, Thomistic, Kantian, Hegelian, Marxist, Heideggerian, analytic, ‘continental’ and so on. These schools are known for being mutually exclusive, rivalrous and combative. What then is the relation between philosophy’s claim to disinterested universal rational inquiry and its historical existence as an assemblage (...) of apparently sectarian schools? This is the question that formed the topic for a conversation that Valery Vino initiated with Ian Hunter. The conversation was recorded on the 2nd of April 2025. Drawing from the dual process model of morality and life history theory, the present research examined the role of cognitive and emotional processes as bridges between basic environmental challenges and other-centered moral orientation. In two survey studies, cognitive and emotional processes represented by future-oriented planning and emotional attachment, respectively, or by perspective taking and empathic concern, respectively, positively predicted other-centeredness in prosocial moral reasoning and moral judgment dilemmas based on rationality or intuition. Cognitive processes were more closely related to rational (...) aspects of other-centeredness, whereas the emotional processes were more closely related to the intuitive aspects of other-centeredness. Finally, the cognitive and emotional processes also mediated negative effects of unpredictability, as well as positive effects of individual-level, contest competition on other-centeredness. Overall, these findings support the view that cognitive and emotional processes do not necessarily contradict each other. Rather, they might work in concert to promote other-centeredness in various circumstances and might be attributed to humans’ developmental flexibility in the face of environmental challenges. Verbal autopsy research is vital for understanding community mortality, informing health interventions and policies in low- and middle-income countries. However, overlooking the community perspectives on deaths can undermine the ethical conduct and effectiveness of such research. This study explored community-based concepts of death, interpretations, and coping mechanisms in five Southeast Asian countries, with this manuscript highlighting key findings from the body mapping exercise that revealed diverse cultural and religious understandings on death. Participants’ views ranged from seeing death as a cessation (...) to life's struggles to an inevitable end, reflecting deep cultural and spiritual beliefs. Coping mechanisms, often grounded in religious practice and community support, played a crucial role in managing grief. The study also underscores the importance of addressing emotional well-being for both participants and researchers. Recommendations include integrating mental health support into research protocols and tailoring practices to local cultural contexts. These findings inform the design of more ethically grounded verbal autopsy tools and procedures that are sensitive to local beliefs and emotional dynamics, ultimately improving data quality and community trust. This study investigates how informal cultural norms and formal pro-equality legislation shape the executive gender pay gap (GPG), and whether legal interventions can ethically substitute for weak cultural support for gender equity. We integrate insights from role congruity theory, institutional theory, and feminist ethics to explain the phenomena. Pro-equality legislation is measured using the World Bank’s Women, Business, and the Law (WBL) Index, while gender egalitarianism is derived from the World Values Surveys. We find that executive pay disparities are most (...) pronounced in less gender-egalitarian societies, especially among non-CEO top management team members and in salary-based compensation. Pro-equality laws—particularly those targeting pay rights, asset ownership, and entrepreneurship—significantly reduce these disparities, with the strongest effects observed in countries with lower cultural egalitarianism. These findings suggest that formal legal reforms can act as ethical correctives where informal norms fail, advancing care-based principles of justice and accountability at the highest organizational levels. Our study contributes to feminist ethics by showing how legal structures can institutionalize equity in the face of cultural resistance. (shrink)

While most previous studies of evaluative conditioning have examined changes in emotional word meaning, few studies have examined the conditioning of gustatory word meaning. This study investigated whether the sweet taste meanings associated with real food names are linked with nonsense words. Participants completed the first evaluation phase, a conditioning phase, and the second evaluation phase in an experiment pairing Japanese nonsense words with Japanese sweet and non-sweet food names collected in a preceding survey. In both evaluation phases, they rated (...) the sweet taste meaning, familiarity, valence, and arousal associated with nonsense words. The results revealed that nonsense words combined with sweet food names induced a sweeter taste meaning than did those combined with non-sweet food names after the conditioning phase. Despite controlling for familiarity, valence, and arousal across conditions, nonsense words paired with non-sweet food names were rated as more exciting than those paired with sweet food names. Familiarity and valence ratings were higher after the conditioning than before in both conditions. These results suggest that evaluative conditioning using sweet food names can promote sweet meanings and preferences of new food product names. (shrink)

abstract: H. H. Kung (1880–1967) is well known as a politician and financier who held prominent offices in Republican Era China (1911–1949). This paper argues that he is also an early example of what Peter Phan has called multiple religious belonging, well before theologians developed the category in a more open, post–Vatican-II era. First, this paper considers Kung’s Christian influences. Kung encountered Oberlin missionaries in Shanxi Province at the end of the nineteenth century. He saw beloved Christian friends killed during (...) the anti-foreign, anti-imperial, anti-Christian actions of the Boxer Rebellion. As an act of love for his friends, Kung journeyed to Oberlin to pursue further studies and to console the families of the departed. Kung brought his education to bear on his later years in leadership within the Republican government, as well as in his efforts with Ming Hsien, an Oberlin-affiliated Christian liberal arts school in Shanxi. Second, this paper considers Kung’s legacy as a proud bloodline descendant of Confucius and an upholder of Confucian institutions. Kung’s embrace of Confucian values can be seen in how conceptions of family inform his thinking and action, as well as in his support for the Temple of Confucius in Qufu in the late 1920s. I argue that Kung’s Confucianism was a second aspect of his multiple religious identity. Third, this paper considers Kung’s gifts of Buddhist material culture to Oberlin College. Kung promoted Asian culture abroad by cultivating ties to his alma mater. Kung gifted the College a Buddhist temple bell in 1929, and also supported the erection of a replica Buddhist temple in the 1940s. Tracking the legacies of the Buddhist bell and temple reveals a reception history of Buddhism in the United States, in a time of incipient religious pluralism. This paper suggests that Kung’s quiet support of Buddhist material culture abroad should be read as a further prong of Kung’s multiple religious belonging. The paper concludes by considering the importance of viewing other Republicanera thinkers in China through the lens of multiple religious belonging. This is significant as a matter of political theology and reminds us of the connected histories between Asia, North America, and elsewhere. (shrink)

Kadın şamanların var olması Türklerde kadının dini açıdan etkili olduğunun bir göstergesi kabul edilebilir. Şamanlar ve atalar kültü İslam’dan sonra evliya ile ilgili inanış ve uygulamalarda etkili olmuştur. Evliyalara keramet gösterme, olağanüstü güçlere sahip olma gibi nitelikler yüklenmiş; onların mezarları ve onlara atfedilen yerler ziyaret yeri kabul edilmiştir. Anadolu’da Hz. Muhammed ve Hz. Ali’nin soyundan gelen kişiler, İslam’ı yaymak için buraya gelenler, Horasan (...) Erenleri, bazı tarikat öncüleri vb. evliya kabul edilmiştir. Bu özelliklere sahip ya da erkek evliyaların yakınları olan kadınlar da kadın evliya olarak hürmet görmüştür. Bu anlamda evliya mezarları kutlu sayılan ağaç, dağ ve su kaynağı gibi yerlerle beraber ziyaret mekânları olmuştur. Makalede Ankara ve çevresindeki bazı illerde tespit edilen kadın evliyaların hayatları, türbe ya da mezarları ve onlarla ilgili inanış ve uygulamalar araştırılmıştır. Bu incelemeler sonucunda Ankara’da 10, diğer şehirlerde ise yaklaşık 50 olmak üzere toplam 60 kadın evliya türbesi, mezarı veya ziyaret yeri tespit edilmiştir. Araştırmanın ortaya çıkardığı önemli sonuçlardan biri, bu türbelerin çoğunlukla kadınlar tarafından ziyaret edilmesidir. Kadın ziyaretçiler tarafından dile getirilen talepler genellikle evlilik, doğum ve çocuk yetiştirmenin hayırlı bir şekilde ilerlemesi ya da tamamlanmasıyla ilgilidir. Kadınların bu istekleri kadın evliya ziyaret yerlerinde dile getirmesi, onların kadın evliya eliyle dertlerine derman veya şifa istemesi olarak değerlendirilebilir. Ayrıca kadın evliya türbelerinde genelde yağmur duası edilmesinin nedeni kadın ve bereketin ilişkili bulunması olabilir. Nadir de olsa bazı kadın evliya türbelerinin erkekler tarafından ziyaret edilmesinin yasak olması, buraların yalnızca kadınlar tarafından sahiplenildiğini de gösterir. Türkiye’nin merkezi, başkent Ankara ve çevresinde kadın evliyaların, bölgenin dini hayatında önemli bir yere sahip olduğu görülmektedir. Bu kadınlar, Anadolu’nun Türkleşmesi, Müslümanlaşması, yurt edinilmesi ve bu yurtta sürekli kalınmasında etkili kişiler olarak kabul edilebilir. Bu kabule bizzat kendi şahsi özellikleri ya da yakın bulundukları erkeklerin özellikleri ya da her ikisi sebep olmuştur. The study analyzed this correlation to provide a reference for the occupational stress management of pediatric nurses.MethodsFrom June to September 2020, 1,457 outpatient and emergency nurses in 29 pediatric specialty hospitals across China were selected as study participants, and a questionnaire survey was conducted using the Basic Information Questionnaire, the Chinese version of (...) the Work Stressor Scale for Nurses, and the Simple Coping Style Scale.ResultsThe assessed stress level of outpatient and emergency nurses in 29 tertiary pediatric specialty hospitals nationwide is lower than the results of the survey of the 2007 domestic norm, p < 0.05. The stressors related to nurses’ expectations, family conflicts, the nature of nursing work, patient factors, and workload were lower compared with the national norm. The positive coping style score on the Simple Coping Style Scale for pediatric outpatient nurses was, and work stressors were positively associated with negative coping styles. Multiple regression analysis showed that the influencing factors of work stressors among pediatric outpatient and emergency nurses correlated with the authorized size, age, working years of nurses, work department, and negative coping styles.ConclusionNegative coping styles were present among pediatric outpatient and emergency nurses and were associated with work stressors. The influencing factors of stressors mainly correlated with the clinical establishment, age, years of employment as a nurse, work department, and negative coping styles. (shrink)

In this chapter, I first provide an historical introduction on what a thought experiment is by citing various popular examples from science and philosophy. I then propose that we should identify a simple thought experiment with a story/question pair that aims at testing a certain hypothesis whose question must be generalizable to a scientific or a philosophical question. Next I discuss the controversy concerning the divergence between our “intuitions” in answering such questions depending on our culture and how this has (...) recently given rise to “experimental philosophy”. I then take up complex thought experiments. I argue that a thought experiment may have “negative heuristics” as it may help us reveal how our concepts may break down when applied to areas outside their ordinary domain. (shrink)

Dunhuang is the world's largest, longest-lasting, and most valuable cultural and artistic treasure of ancient murals and an important component of grotto art. The clothing and costumes of the Dunhuang murals reflect the process of Sinicization of Buddhism over the time. In order to save the costumes of these murals from deterioration and age-related factors, digital technology is used, which can not only save the precious cultural relics but also ensure their permanent and authentic preservation. This study takes the vestment (...) on the imperial mural of the Vimala Kirti Sutra of Cave No. 220 in the Mogao Grottoes of Dunhuang, China, as the research object. Firstly, it studied the detailed components, materials, colors, heraldic symbols, meanings, and aesthetic characteristics of mural vestments from the perspective of clothing history. Then, it restored the clothing patterns in the murals using digital technology, established the three-dimensional clothing model on the CLO 3D platform, and carried out the 3D digital restoration of the research object. In order to verify the accuracy of the restoration results, the analytic hierarchy process and the entropy method were comprehensively used to determine the subjective and objective weights of the indexes, and the comprehensive weights were corrected based on the idea of game theory. Finally, fuzzy comprehensive evaluation was used for the restoration results. According to the final calculation result of fuzzy comprehensive evaluation, the restoration result was considered “good” with an overall evaluation score of 80.35. One of the greatest challenges of this project revolved around recovering the dilapidated mural paintings using digital technology. The high precision of the digital restoration of the vestment showcases the three-dimensional dynamic appearance of the Tang Dynasty emperors. This not only facilitates the education and propagation of traditional costume culture but also offers a novel approach to the sustainable display of mural cultural heritage. (shrink)

In this paper I respond to the objections put forth by Kresimir Agbaba 22: 1-6) against my earlier paper 20: 7-13) in which I argue that given Donnellan's formulation|as well as Kripke's and Salmon's gen- eralized accounts|an attributive use of a denite description is a very rare linguistic phenomenon.

This essay aims to rectify a failure on the part of Western philosophers of technology to attend to the creative philosophical work of Li Bocong at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing. After a brief account of Li Bocong’s personal contacts with the West and some remarks on his relationship to Marxism, we take up three aspects of his philosophy that can contribute to enlarging Western philosophical thinking about engineering and technology: (1) Li’s analysis of engineering as (...) more than design, (2) his argument for the relevance of the sociology of engineering, and (3) his conceptualization of engineering ethics as more than professional ethics. A key challenge in the management of the public-private partnership project is to understand the critical factors for sustainability performance as well as their complex interaction. Majority of existing studies focus on identifying general factors without consideration of specific context of individual sector. To bridge the gap, unique characteristics of water PPP projects are taken into consideration in this study where the relationship among critical factors to achieve sustainable performance is analyzed from a network perspective. Stakeholder-associated factors and their interrelations (...) were identified via extensive literature review and structured interview, and the social network analysis method was employed to recognize the critical factors and their interactions in sustainability achievement of water PPP projects. As a result, seven stakeholder groups and 18 critical factor nodes were identified and further classified into four challenges when achieving sustainability. These challenges are promoting ecological awareness and responsible citizen behaviour; project construction quality; ecological designs and technology innovations; and project management capacity. These findings provide the stakeholders of water PPP projects with useful references for mitigating the risks and facilitating efforts to achieve better sustainability performance. (shrink)

In China, the local communities and various ethnic minorities still hold, sustain and develop traditional medicial knowledge (TMK), innovations, and practices within the original communities. TMK also has pharmaceutical option value, which has attracted interests in commercial use of TMK for pharmaceutical innovation in China. However, the increased use of TMK for non-traditional purposes might lead to a change in the customary treatment of TMK as common goods of relevant communities and peoples, and may lead to significant tension faced by (...) both providers and users of TMK in China. We find there is a significant gap in literature analysing the phenonmenon of domestic biopolitics concerning TMK in China. Closely connected problem is the contradictory relationship between providers and users of TMK, especially between the indigenous and local communities, and corporate and industrial actors. Therefore, urgent research is needed to fill this literature gap. (shrink)

As English plays a significant role in most professions, improving the English for Specific Purpose writing competence allows individuals to participate in the global professional community, which makes ESP writing important for research. However, research on ESP writing is reported to be insufficient, and how factors such as emotions affect ESP writing is rarely and marginally studied. Therefore, this study aimed at investigating how induced emotions influence the learning outcome in ESP writing classes with an emphasis on a particular rhetorical (...) choice among medical university undergraduates. A total of 63 medical university undergraduates were recruited. After the emotional inducement, they were taught with materials selected and adopted from the BioCauses corpus and with an explicitly inductive teaching approach. Results revealed that positive emotions positively correlated with better learning outcomes, while negative emotions hindered participants in their learning. The results shed light on the impact of emotional states on ESP/medical research article writing, learning, and teaching. Further study implications were provided accordingly. (shrink)

Chinese scholars began to reflect on technics and technology during ancient times. The earliest effort in recorded history is the Yijing, which has been attributed to the Western Zhou dynasty. What was originally a book of divination also contains philosophical reflections on technics which have influenced views of later generations. The philosophical traditions of Confucianism and Daoism have also contributed to Chinese philosophy of technics and technology, although they tended to promote opposing attitudes. In addition, there are influential practical texts (...) such as two technical manuals, the Kaogong ji and Tiangong kaiwu. Summarizing from all these sources, three key ideas that distinguish Chinese from Western thinking about traditional technics and eventually modern technology are the absence of a Creator god (or, more positively, a sense of the material world as self- subsisting), an emphasis on practice (and the primacy of practical or political affairs in human life), and a concern for harmony between heaven and earth (that is, between human beings with the larger world in which they live). Studies have shown that performance‐dependent monetary rewards facilitate visual perception. However, no study has examined whether such a positive effect is limited to the rewarded task or may be generalized to other tasks. In the current study, two groups of people were asked to perform two visual perception tasks, one being a reward‐relevant task and the other being a reward‐irrelevant task. For the reward‐relevant task, the experimental group received performance‐dependent monetary rewards, whereas the control group did not. For the reward‐irrelevant (...) task, both groups were not rewarded. The two tasks were randomly intermixed trial by trial (Experiment 1) or presented block by block (Experiment 2) or session by session (Experiments 3a, 3b, and 3c). Results showed that performance‐dependent monetary rewards improved participants' performance on the relevant task in all experiments and impaired their performance on the irrelevant task in Experiments 2, 3a, 3b, and 3c. These results suggested that monetary rewards might incur a cost on reward‐irrelevant tasks. Finally, the benefit of monetary rewards disappeared when they were no longer provided during the final session. This is the first study that reveals both the bright and dark sides of the performance‐dependent monetary rewards in visual perception. (shrink)

Technical artifacts had been a lost theme in philosophy for a long time until the emergence of philosophy of technology in the end of nineteenth century. In the twentieth century, Herbert Simon put forward sciences of the artificial, and Peter Kroes and Anthonie Meijers proposed a theory of the dual nature of technical artifacts. From the point of view of philosophy of technology, Aristotle’s four causes theory is an explanation on the nature of technical artifacts in essence rather than that (...) of the natural world. However, Aristotle, Simon, Kroes and Meijers did not pay attention to technical artifacts’ life cycle, which inevitably leads to the failure of their theory of technical artifacts to some extent. The fact that technical artifacts, like living beings, are as mortal as human beings means that they also have a life cycle from birth to death. In order to interpret these phenomena, we plan to raise a theory of four factors of technical artifacts. However, this paper only aims to define the life cycle of technical artifacts as three stages, i.e. creation, vitality, and ending. And it also going to examine the creation stage and re-interpret Aristotle’s four causes theory according to the four factors theory. (shrink)
