Martha Nussbaum is one among a number of contemporary American philosophers to suggest the writing of philosophy as central to its achievement. Nussbaum urges that philosophical writing is not neutral, that form and style centrally influence content. Like Richard Rorty, Nussbaum sees no sharp distinction between literary criticism and philosophy. Like Stanley Cavell, she finds in literature an edifying response to philosophical anxiety. Taking her pronouncements on philosophical style as its primary point of departure, this paper interrogates Nussbaum’s (...) own standing as “philosophical stylist.” This description is meant to signal both the centrality of language and writing to her conceptions of philosophy and her own writing as exhibiting flair and elegance as well as an irreducibility to paraphrase. With particular attention to Nussbaum’s Love’s Knowledge , I will argue that it is in the philosopher’s formal pronouncements or principles, rather than in her philosophical practice, that foregrounding of style is most apparent. Much of Nietzsche’s work questions modes of thought, notably Platonism, that posit a dualism between a true world outside time and an apparent world of change, becoming, and semblance. In 2007 new meat inspection regulations standardizing meat production throughout the Province of British Columbia (BC), Canada came into effect moving food for local consumption closer to continentally harmonized production standards. Critics argue that the economic viability of small-scale livestock farmers is threatened. Small-scale women farmers are central to the creation of alternative local agri-food networks in BC. Using gender as an analytically enabling tool this paper argues that public food-safety regulation can create the conditions for the dominance of private (...) agri-food governance. The discursive creation of a feminized privileged consumer legitimates much non-democratic agri-food governance. The paper argues that more just and ecologically sustainable futures require a ‘gender troubling’ of agri-food governance in which the privileged identity of the food consumer is reconstructed as global citizen in the context of the food sovereignty of the farmers who produce their food. Martha Nussbuam is one of the most prolific and original philosophers working today. Influenced by ancient philosophy, she has written on the relationship between fiction, the emotions and moral reasoning. With Amartya Sen she developed the capabilities approach to human well-being, which helped shape the UN’s Human Development Index. She is Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professor of Law and Ethics at the University of Chicago.

Granville Sharp (1735–1813) was a White English scholar and one of Britain’s most vocal abolitionists. In 1787, he founded the Society for Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade, together with Thomas Clarkson. This chapter is an excerpt from Sharp’s 1769 work A Representation of the Injustice and Dangerous Tendency of Tolerating Slavery, his first of many antislavery tracts. This text is significant for at least two reasons. First, it contains an intriguing argument that it is illegitimate to (...) deprive enslaved Black people of their humanity and concomitant rights, and to view them as having the legal status of nonhuman animals. Second, Sharp examines a newspaper from New York and expresses disgust about the ways in which the paper’s advertisements dehumanize enslaved people who are for sale or have run away. (shrink)

Martha Albertson Fineman's earlier work developed a theory of inevitable and derivative dependencies as a way of problematizing the core assumptions underlying the 'autonomous' subject of liberal law and politics in the context of US equality discourse. Her 'vulnerability thesis' represents the evolution of that earlier work and situates human vulnerability as a critical heuristic for exploring alternative legal and political foundations. This book draws together major British and American scholars who present different perspectives on the concept of vulnerability (...) and Fineman's 'vulnerability thesis'.
