This paper reports an empirical study conducted to examine the relationship between employees’ Entrepreneurial, Professional and Leadership (EPL) career motivations and their intrapreneurial motivation. Using data collected from 425 working adults in the research/innovation and healthcare settings, we develop a self-report measure of employee intrapreneurial motivation. We also adapt an existing self-report measure of E, P and L career motivations (previously developed and used with university students) for use with working adult organizational employees. Confirmatory factor analysis indicate that E, P (...) and L motivations and intrapreneurial motivation can be measured independently and reliably, while regression analyses show that the employees’ E, P and L motivations all contribute to explaining variance in their intrapreneurial motivation. Individuals with high E, P and L motivational profiles are also found to have the highest intrapreneurial motivation scores, while those low on E, P and L motivations have the least intrapreneurial motivation. Our findings suggest that the potential for intrapreneurship is not unique to only entrepreneurial employees. Instead, one can find intrapreneurs among employees with strong leadership and professional motivations as well. We discuss the findings in the context of generating more research to address the challenges of talent management in 21st century knowledge economies where there is greater career mobility and boundarylessness in the workforce. This study investigates: the changes in three major health-related factors—physical activity, non-physical-activity health behavior, and depressive symptoms, and how changes in physical activity were associated with changes in one’s depressive symptoms among young adults, middle-aged adults, and older adults while controlling non-physical-activity health behavior and sociodemographic characteristics among young, middle-aged, and older adults before and after the COVID-19 outbreak lockdown in the United States. A total of 695 participants completed an online questionnaire via MTurk, and participants were asked to recall (...) their physical activity, depressive symptoms, and non-physical-activity health behavior status in January and May of 2020. The IPAQ-SF was used to evaluate individuals’ physical activity, while the CES-D-10 was used to assess depressive symptoms. Covariates included non-physical-activity health behavior and sociodemographic factors. A Bayesian significance testing of changes was used to examine significant changes in physical activity, non-physical-activity behavior, and depressive symptoms in each age group while Bayesian regression analysis was employed to examine how the changes in physical activity were associated with respondents’ depressive symptoms while controlling for individual NHB and sociodemographic characteristics. The results showed that the participants tended to maintain their physical activity levels after the lockdown despite significant increases in sitting time among young and older adults. Decreases in moderate physical activity frequency were associated with a higher level of depressive symptoms. Although young and middle-aged cohorts experienced fewer differences in depressive symptoms compared to their counterparts in the older group, we found no significant heterogeneity effects in the relationships of interest across all age groups. Considering different influences of physical activity on depressive symptoms depending on different levels of activity and ages, more randomized clinical trials with program-based intervention studies should be conducted with different physical activity programs for different age populations. Bidirectional trans‐synaptic signaling is essential for the formation, maturation, and plasticity of synaptic connections. Synaptic cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) are prime drivers in shaping the identities of trans‐synaptic signaling pathways. A series of recent studies provide evidence that diverse presynaptic cell adhesion proteins dictate the regulation of specific synaptic properties in postsynaptic neurons. Focusing on mammalian synaptic CAMs, this article outlines several exemplary cases supporting this notion and highlights how these trans‐synaptic signaling pathways collectively contribute to the specificity and diversity (...) of neural circuit architecture. Background The use of lengthy, detailed, and complex informed consent forms is of paramount concern in biomedical research as it may not truly promote the rights and interests of research participants. The extent of information in ICFs has been the subject of debates for decades; however, no clear guidance is given. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine the perspectives of research participants about the type and extent of information they need when they are invited to participate in (...) biomedical research. Methods This multi-center, cross-sectional, descriptive survey was conducted at 54 study sites in seven Asia-Pacific countries. A modified Likert-scale questionnaire was used to determine the importance of each element in the ICF among research participants of a biomedical study, with an anchored rating scale from 1 to 5. Results Of the 2484 questionnaires distributed, 2113 were returned. The majority of respondents considered most elements required in the ICF to be ‘moderately important’ to ‘very important’ for their decision making. Major foreseeable risk, direct benefit, and common adverse effects of the intervention were considered to be of most concerned elements in the ICF. Conclusions Research participants would like to be informed of the ICF elements required by ethical guidelines and regulations; however, the importance of each element varied, e.g., risk and benefit associated with research participants were considered to be more important than the general nature or technical details of research. Using a participant-oriented approach by providing more details of the participant-interested elements while avoiding unnecessarily lengthy details of other less important elements would enhance the quality of the ICF. For two thousand years the Mencius was revered as one of the foundational texts of the Confucian canon, which formed the basis of traditional Chinese education. Today it commands considerable attention in current debates on "Asian values" raging in classrooms and boardrooms in both East Asia and the West. This volume, which represents the work of fifteen respected scholars of early Chinese thought and culture, is an especially timely effort to bring the Mencius under fresh scrutiny. Making use of recently (...) excavated manuscripts, the contributors approach the Mencius from novel perspectives, challenge established interpretations, and confront anew issues that continue to attract and divide students of this classic text. The famous Mencian doctrine of the "goodness" of human nature forms one main focus. Questions of context and interpretation bring into sharp relief key hermeneutical issues that surround the text. Does the Mencius present a coherent and systematically developed ethical teaching? Or should it be read as a composite work, comprising different layers of material that reflect different emphases and conflicting doctrines? Traversing contested territories and exploring new avenues of understanding, the essays presented here do not aim at settling debates; on the contrary, they afford ample opportunities for further discussion on the background, interpretation, and continued relevance of this classic of Confucian philosophy. This article explores the Korean application of “mind-transmission” (K. chŏnsim, C. chuanxin) episodes to the intra-Sŏn (C. Chan) polemics. Korean Sŏn masters, unlike Chinese counterparts, sought for the religious meaning of the existence of multiple transmission episodes that circulated in East Asia from the Sŏn polemical perspective. In particular, Kagun and Paekp’a used the term “samch’ŏ chŏnsim” to promote their own visions of Sŏn within the situation in which different visions of Sŏn competed for dominance.

Chan (Jp. Zen) Buddhism, which came to prominence as a thriving monastic institution in China and Japan during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, is often thought to be antithetical to and strongly criticized by Confucianism, especially by the leading philosopher of the period Zhu Xi, for emphasizing quietist methods renouncing everyday life as well as unconventional behavior with antinomian implications that undermine societal harmony. These iconoclastic Chan ideals are expressed in paradoxical gong’an (Jp. kōan) stories with poetic and (...) prose commentaries. Zhu Xi disparaged Chan’s pursuit of enlightenment, rather than moral cultivation, and viewed meditation as a withdrawal from ethical concerns that favored emptiness over concrete particularities and hollow words over upstanding social activities. Recent scholarship features debates about whether and to what extent Zhu Xi himself was sympathetic to Chan, a practice he explored in his early career but soon abandoned. As this chapter shows, Chan was greatly influenced by Confucian thought in key aspects of its approach to integrating contemplative self-awareness with clerical fellowship. Elements of moral practice suggested in monastic rules and didactic Chan poetry reflect the standpoint of communal labor indicated by the saying attributed to Tang-dynasty master Baizhang, “A day without working is a day without eating” (一日不做. 一日不食). This essay explores shared cultural presuppositions underlying the perception of good governance in Chan Buddhism and Neo-Confucianism of the Song dynasty (960–1279) through a comparative hermeneutics between the Northern Song Chan scholar-monk Qisong 契嵩 (1007–1072) and the Southern Song Neo-Confucian scholar Zhu Xi 朱熹 (1130–1200). This is achieved through a parallel reading of Qisong’s Fujiao bian 輔教編 (Essays on Assisting the Teaching) and Zhu Xi’s commentary on the classic Great Learning, Daxue zhangju 大學章句. As a core theme of (...) these works, good governance, understood as both self-governance and the governance of others, is grounded in particular cultural assumptions regarding interconnectedness. The impact of Buddhism on Song-dynasty Confucianism is well known, and the Song Confucian practice of “quiet sitting” (jingzuo 靜坐) seems to have been influenced by contemporaneous Chan discourses and especially the practice of seated meditation (zuochan 坐禪). That said, Confucian quiet sitting has roots in pre-Buddhist discourses, as well. The syncretic Warring States text Guanzi, which reflects both Confucian and Daoist elements, is one prominent example of an early work containing instructions for contemplative practice. This presentation will compare (...) and contrast Buddhist and Confucian approaches to meditation to explore (1) how these traditions have influenced each other over time and (2) the relevance for our understanding of mindfulness today. As we will see, although Buddhism undoubtedly leaves its mark on Confucianism, the qi-based philosophy indigenous to the Chinese context in turn influences Buddhism via an understanding of meditation as a type of qi-based energy work. In contrast to these traditional Confucian and Buddhist approaches, popular understandings of “meditation” today are largely influenced by the contemporary mindfulness movement, which itself owes much to perceptions and misperceptions of Japanese Zen. Via our Confucian–Buddhist dialogue, this presentation seeks to recover a richer understanding of mental cultivation that may, in turn, both challenge and supplement mindfulness in its current form in popular culture. This chapter explores the paradoxical structure of cultivating Confucian humility (qian xun 謙遜) by juxtaposing it with the Chan 禪 Buddhist practice of the Three No’s (sanwu 三無) as articulated in Huineng’s 慧能 Platform Sutra (壇經). While Song 宋 Confucians like Cheng Yi 程頤 and Zhu Xi 朱熹 recast humility as an ethical ideal grounded in “non-dwelling” (you er buju 有而不居) and “no-self” (wuwo 無我), this chapter argues that explicit efforts to be humble can themselves impede the transformation they (...) seek to bring about. I call this the paradox of striving for humility, a specific instance of what I term the broader paradox of practice, where intentional effort undercuts its own ethical aim. I then contrast this with a parallel paradox in Huineng’s thought: the paradox of striving for awakening, in which deliberate striving and methodical practice hinder sudden awakening. Juxtaposing these two paradoxes shows how both Confucian and Chan traditions wrestle with the limits of language, intention, and deliberate practice in self-cultivation. (shrink)

The relationship between women and emotion presents intricate challenges, especially concerning the experiences of Asian women in both Korea and the U.S. However, “emotion” is essential for exploring women’s agency and subjectivity through the experiences of women in Korean patriarchal history. This study examines women’s emotions and experiences under the Korean patriarchy, from the Joseon dynasty to the present, focusing on the dynamics of women’s roles within families and religious communities shaped by Confucianism and Buddhism. Two main aspects are explored: (...) first, the Confucian perspective on emotions, particularly regarding women’s emotions in familial and societal contexts, is contrasted with Buddhist interpretations; second, this study highlights how Seon (Ch. Chan/Jp. Zen 禪) practices among Korean nuns promote personal and collective well-being through self-cultivation, benefiting both human and non-human entities as an expression of eco-dharma. These practices convert negative emotions into deeper compassion and wisdom, which I refer to as “planetary love,” allowing women to transcend their roles as daughters and wives and embrace a greater self that nurtures life for all sentient beings. The Seon practices of Korean Buddhist nuns exemplify the convergence of Buddhism and Confucianism, focusing on “self-cultivation” that fosters an expansive eco-dharma, referred to as salim 살림 (enlivening). In this framework, emotion or jeong 정/情, emerges as a shared value across both traditions. (shrink)

This chapter examines the historical and intellectual interactions between Confucianism and Buddhism through the lens of Analects commentarial traditions. It traces how Confucianism engaged with Buddhism, beginning with Huang Kan’s integration of Buddhist literary styles in his exegesis, followed by the more overt incorporation of Buddhist ideas by Neo-Confucian scholars such as Xie Liangzuo and Zhu Xi. The study further highlights how the left-wing Yangming scholars, including Li Zhuowu and Zhang Dai, sought a more explicit convergence between Confucianism and Buddhism, (...) often interpreting the Analects through a Buddhist lens. The chapter also explores the reverse influence, focusing on Chan Master Zhixu, who reinterpreted Confucian classics using Buddhist doctrinal frameworks. By analyzing these mutual engagements, this study reveals how Confucian and Buddhist thought continuously infiltrated and reshaped each other over centuries, culminating in a dynamic intellectual synthesis during the Ming and Qing periods. In Public Reason Confucianism, Kim Sungmoon presents a perfectionist theory that is based on a partially comprehensive Confucian doctrine but is non-sectarian, since the doctrine is widely shared in East Asian societies. Despite its attractiveness, I argue that this project, unfortunately, fails because it is still vulnerable to the sectarian critique. The blurred distinction between partially and fully comprehensive doctrines will create a loophole problem. Sectarian laws and policies may gain legitimacy that they do not deserve. I further defend political (...) Confucianism, which is regarded by Kim as an inadequately intelligible form of Confucianism. Kim assumes a too narrow understanding of intelligibility. Although political Confucianism may not be politically intelligible, it is civically intelligible, i.e. it is culturally intelligibly different from other political theories in terms of its implications in citizens’ actions in civil society. In light of civic intelligibility, the distinctiveness of political Confucianism should not be underestimated. (shrink)

Sungmoon Kim's Public Reason Confucianism: Democratic Perfectionism and Constitutionalism in East Asia offers new perspectives and an innovative alternative to one of the most important philosophical and political discussions concerning East Asia today. As in the prequel, Confucian Democracy in East Asia: Theory and Practice, arguments provided by Kim are well researched and engage extensively with major theories in the current debate. In this book, Kim is mainly in dialogue with the works of Daniel Bell, Joseph Chan, Jonathan Quong, (...) John Rawls, and Joseph Raz. Joseph Chan and Sungmoon Kim take me to task for my understanding and uses of Tocqueville, and because of the resemblance they claim to see between one of my major arguments and modernization theory. I think their charges are mistaken or misplaced. Chan and Kim reject my claims that China is already, in a meaningful sense and to a substantial degree, a democratic society, and that, unless such a society is matched by political democratization, a major legitimation crisis (...) is almost inevitable in the foreseeable future. I try to show that they are wrong in their assessment of the state of Chinese society and in their dismissal of the crisis tendencies that only timely democratization can help avert. Chan and Kim completely misconstrue what my prudential argument for democracy in China means, and what it does not, and I explain why. Finally, I reaffirm, over Chan’s objections, the view that the fundamental choice regarding political legitimacy in China today lies between the Mandate of Heaven and democracy, given the demise of communism, and I restate this view in terms of the concept of sovereignty. Confucian scholars should satisfy two conditions insofar as they think their theories enable Confucianism to make contributions to liberal politics and social policy. The liberal accommodation condition stipulates that the theory in question should accommodate as many reasonable conceptions of the good and religious doctrines as possible while the intelligibility condition stipulates that the theory must have a recognizable Confucian character. By and large, Joseph Chan’s Confucian perfectionism is able to satisfy the above two conditions. However, contrary to (...) class='Hi'>Chan and many other Confucian scholars, I argue that any active promotion of Confucianism will violate the liberal accommodation condition. I propose the “wide view of moderate perfectionism,” which enables Confucianism to shed light on a wide range of political and social issues without promoting Confucianism actively. Thus, I present a new approach to the long-standing question of how Confucianism may improve political and social development in a liberal society. (shrink)

This chapter attempts to build a Confucian conception of public reason for Confucian-influenced East Asian societies to adopt and tackle political and bioethical issues. The chapter first indicates that public reason is present at various levels of human collectives, namely, communitarian, national, and international. It concentrates on constructing a proper Confucian notion of public reason at the national level given that only the sovereign states are able to make effective public policy and laws to govern their people, although such a (...) Confucian notion can be shared by the peoples across East Asian countries and regions, such as mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Then I lay out Rawls’ liberal conception of public reason and explicate why it is not suitable for an East Asian country like China to accept. This is followed by two sections addressing the two Confucian conceptions of public reason that have been proposed, respectively, by Joseph Chan and Sungmoon Kim. I indicate how each of them faces a dilemma that cannot be adequately resolved. In Sect. 4, I outline a new Confucian conception of public reason based on the view developed in my book Reconstructionist Confucianism, including a Confucian account of basic liberty, equality, and individual rights consistent with the central requirements of the Confucian virtues that are still vibrant in East Asian societies. The values of political justice under this Confucian conception integrate both Confucian virtues and basic rights. Finally, the chapter appeals to this conception to review the bioethical issue of medically assisted suicide and argues why it should not be legalized in East Asia according to this conception of public reason. The contention discussed here, is that one might be able to get around the puzzle contained in the results of Kim and Chan:— That a quantity of inertial mass is effectively lost, (a so called non-classical-rotational inertia NCRI,) but that being a “supersolid” there is no path for the normal fraction to slip past the 1 – 2 % supersolid fraction, which (it is supposed) remains stationary within the annulus. As a solution we argue that the effective loss of (...) inertial mass might be a real loss of inertial mass– that it might be intrinsic to a supersolid or superfluid “pool,” (a portion which has gone supersolid or superfluid.) In this way the puzzle would be resolved because the normal part and the supersolid part do not need to slip past each other in order to produce the experimental results. (shrink)

In questo articolo si analizza la situazione della religione nativa popolare coreana, comunemente descritta col termine ombrello di “sciamanesimo”, durante la metà e la seconda parte del periodo Koryŏ. Lo studio tenta di espandere e correggere alcune assunzioni di base del lavoro di Lee Seog-Ju (2010), il quale ha descritto la dialettica esistente tra l’élite confuciana, la casa reale, il buddismo e lo sciamanesimo in epoca Koryŏ, correggendo come detto alcuni assunti storici dell’autore. Nello specifico si terrà conto de: la (...) pervasività della dottrina nell’aiuto esterno dei bodhisattva nella Corea medievale come notato da Yung Sung-chan (2016); l’esistenza di un sincretismo tra le dottrina confuciane e quelle buddiste, notato da Kim Jongmyung (2016) e Vermeersch (2020); la natura sincretica dello sciamanesimo in rapporto col buddismo, notata da più autori quali Grayson (1992) e McBride (2007), infine, l’importanza dello sciamanesimo nei riti nazionali preesistenti come l’Assemblea delle Otto Proibizioni, sottolineata da Vermeersch (2007). Tesi di questo articolo è dimostrare come lo scontro con lo sciamanesimo da parte degli intellettuali confuciani di Koryŏ fosse dovuto non tanto da una supposta devianza dall’ortodossia confuciana da parte della religione nativa, ma da una sua non aderenza ai canoni dei riti del buddismo di Stato. Lo scritto si muoverà secondo il seguente schema: anzitutto verrà brevemente analizzata la società del regno di Koryŏ nei suoi aspetti religiosi, culturali, sociali e politici, verrà poi data una descrizione della relazione trai due attori in campo, vale a dire lo sciamanesimo e il confucianesimo in relazione al buddismo, infine verranno fornite le conclusioni dello studio. Modern Confucian political philosophy has long been divided between the more comprehensive branch of theories that prioritize Confucian classics and traditions and the more moderate branch of theories that attempt to modernize Confucianism so as to better accommodate contemporary East Asian societies.1 Recently, Joseph Chan and Sungmoon Kim, two leading thinkers from the latter camp proposed their distinct approaches to advocate what for them are the most promising versions of political Confucianism. The role of Chan Buddhism for mind therapy is distinguished from psychotherapy by the objectives in diminishing or removing the deluded perceived self and the psychological self of attachments and cravings, which are considered as the more basic origins for psychological suffering and problems. The Buddhist concepts of impermanence, no-self and emptiness are discussed to explain the Buddhist explanation for human suffering. A four-stage theory is described to explain the common Buddhist meditation experience toward the realization of no-self. Removing (...) psychological attachment is found to be of explanatory value for many enlightenment episodes of Chan masters. Meditation concentration and reduction of self-attachment will mutually reinforce each other toward a complete therapy of the mind. An innovative approach for psychotherapy in going further to tackle a person's basic life attachments is suggested. (shrink)

Since the very beginning, Confucianism has been troubled by a serious gap between its political ideals and the reality of societal circumstances. Contemporary Confucians must develop a viable method of governance that can retain the spirit of the Confucian ideal while tackling problems arising from nonideal modern situations. The best way to meet this challenge, Joseph Chan argues, is to adopt liberal democratic institutions that are shaped by the Confucian conception of the good rather than the liberal conception of (...) the right.Confucian Perfectionism examines and reconstructs both Confucian political thought and liberal democratic institutions, blending them to form a new Confucian political philosophy. What is belief? "Beliefs aim at truth" is the commonly accepted starting point for philosophers who want to give an adequate account of this fundamental state of mind, but it raises as many questions as it answers. For example, in what sense can beliefs be said to have an aim of their own? If belief aims at truth, does it mean that reasons to believe must also be based on truth? Must beliefs be formed on the basis of evidence alone? (...) Is truth the constitutive norm of belief? Does aiming at truth bring in a normative dimension to the nature of belief? How can the aim of truth guide the formation of our beliefs? In what ways do partial beliefs aim at truth? Is truth the aim of epistemic justification? Last but not least, is it knowledge rather than truth which is the fundamental aim of belief?
