Abstract

Many commonly prescribed medications contain animal-derived ingredients, such as gelatin, lactose, and magnesium stearate. For ethical vegans, who abstain from consuming animal products on moral grounds, this presents a serious but often overlooked challenge. Physicians rarely disclose the presence of such ingredients—partly due to poor labeling by manufacturers and partly due to their own lack of awareness—thereby undermining patient autonomy. Ethical veganism, while not a religion, plays a role in many patients’ lives comparable to religious belief, and thus merits similar respect in clinical decision-making. Failure to disclose animal ingredients risks psychological harm, damages trust in the physician–patient relationship, and can lead to medication nonadherence with significant health consequences. In this paper, I argue that drug manufacturers should replace animal-derived excipients with plant-based or synthetic alternatives where feasible and must provide transparent labeling or accessible databases to inform patients and providers. Medical schools should include these issues in their curricula, and physicians should take a proactive approach to informed consent. Addressing these concerns would not only foster the autonomy of ethical vegans but also improve health outcomes and inclusivity in medical practice.
