Abstract

Media policy and media governance deal with international and national policymaking and have only been reluctantly taken up in feminist media research. Key influences for promoting gender-sensitive media content and media production initially came from feminist movements and were subsequently incorporated into recommendations and documents by national and international organizations. The Fourth World Conference on Women is considered a turning point for feminist media policy, followed by a series of international and national measures such as the worldwide Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP), the activities of the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF), the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE), or the Global Alliance on Media and Gender (GAMAG) of UNESCO. Although these activities are becoming increasingly extensive, implementation in national media policies is still progressing very slowly.
