August Weismann is famous for having argued against the inheritance of acquired characters. However, an analysis of his work indicates that Weismann always held that changes in external conditions, acting during development, were the necessary causes of variation in the hereditary material. For much of his career he held that acquired germ-plasm variation was inherited. An irony, which is in tension with much of the standard twentieth-century history of biology, thus exists – Weismann was not a Weismannian. (...) I distinguish three claims regarding the germ-plasm: (1) its continuity, (2) its morphological sequestration, and (3) its variational sequestration. With respect to changes in Weismann’s views on the cause of variation, I divide his career into four stages. For each stage I analyze his beliefs on the relative importance of changes in external conditions and sexual reproduction as causes of variation in the hereditary material. Weismann believed, and Weismannism denies, that variation, heredity, and development were deeply intertwined processes. In this paper, I analyze the disruptive impact of Darwinian selectionism for the century-long tradition in which the environment had a direct causative role in shaping an organism’s traits. In the case of humans, the surrounding environment often determined not only the physical, but also the mental and moral features of individuals and whole populations. With its apparatus of indirect effects, random variations, and a much less harmonious view of nature and adaptation, Darwinian selectionism severed the deep imbrication of organism (...) and milieu posited by these traditional environmentalist models. This move had radical implications well beyond strictly biological debates. In my essay, I discuss the problematization of the moral idiom of environmentalism by William James and August Weismann who adopted a selectionist view of the development of mental faculties. These debates show the complex moral discourse associated with the environmentalist-selectionist dilemma. They also well illustrate how the moral reverberations of selectionism went well beyond the stereotyped associations with biological fatalism or passivity of the organism. Rereading them today may be helpful as a genealogical guide to the complex ethical quandaries unfolding in the current postgenomic scenario in which a revival of new environmentalist themes is taking place. The idea of ‘reversion’ or ‘atavism’ has a peculiar history. For many authors in the latenineteenth and early-twentieth centuries – including Darwin, Galton, Pearson, Weismann, and Spencer, among others – reversion was one of the central phenomena which a theory of heredity ought to explain. By only a few decades later, however, Fisher and others could look back upon reversion as a historical curiosity, a non-problem, or even an impediment to clear theorizing. I explore various reasons that reversion might (...) have appeared to be a central problem for this first group of figures, focusing on their commitment to a variety of conceptual features of evolutionary theory; discuss why reversion might have then ceased to be an interesting phenomenon; and, finally, close with some more general thoughts about the death of scientific problems. Discussions of the implications of sexual reproduction have appeared throughout the history of evolutionary biology, from Darwin to Weismann, Fisher, Muller, Maynard Smith, and Williams. The latest of these appearances highlighted an evolutionary paradox that had previously been overlooked. In many animal and plant species reproduction is obligately sexual and also half the offspring are male, yet the males contribute nothing but genes to reproduction. If asexual mutants of such a species were to produce as many asexual offspring on (...) average as sexual females in that species produce daughters and sons, the growth rate of their population would be twice as large. Whereas half the offspring of sexual females are noncontributory males, all the offspring of such an asexual mutant would contribute to growth rate. The aim of this paper is to provide a close reading of Deleuze's complex account of Freud's Beyond the Pleasure Principle in Difference and Repetition. The first part provides a reading of Beyond the Pleasure Principle itself, showing why Freud feels the need to develop a transcendental account of repetition. In the second, I show the limitations of Freud's account, drawing on the work of Weismann to argue that Freud's transcendental model mischaracterises repetition. Jaegwon Kim’s supervenience/exclusion argument attempts to show that non-reductive physicalism is incompatible with mental causation. This influential argument can be seen as relying on the following principle, which I call “the piggyback principle”: If, with respect to an effect, E, an instance of a supervenient property, A, has no causal powers over and above, or in addition to, those had by its supervenience base, B, then the instance of A does not cause E (unless A is identical with B). In (...) their “Epiphenomenalism: The Dos and the Don’ts,” Larry Shapiro and Elliott Sober employ a novel empirical approach to challenge the piggyback principle. Their empirical approach pulls from the experiments of August Weismann regarding the inheritance of acquired characteristics. Through an examination of Weismann’s experiments, Shapiro and Sober extract lessons in reasoning about the epiphenomenalism of a property. And according to these empirically drawn lessons, the piggyback principle is a don’t. My primary aim in this paper is to defend the piggyback principle against Shapiro and Sober’s empirical approach. Pagani et al (Nature Neuroscience, May 15, 2026) reported two reproducible biologically dissociable autism subtypes identified through cross-species functional connectivity analyses spanning 20 mouse models of autism risk and a multicenter human fMRI dataset of n = 940 individuals with idiopathic autism plus n = 1,036 neurotypical controls. The two subtypes — hypoconnectivity (n = 74, 7.9% of autistic sample, associated with synaptic dysfunction pathways) and hyperconnectivity (n = 162, 17.2%, associated with immune-related and transcriptional pathways) — together account for (...) approximately 25% of the autistic individuals in their aggregated dataset. The remaining ~75% did not fit either polarized cluster. This paper provides the formal Long Division Protocol (LDP) reduction of their findings into the substrate-neutral primitives of the SNSFT/SNSFL framework, mapping their two subtypes to distinct operating points on the Adaptation (A) axis within the Locked phase of PNBA Identity Physics. The hyperconnectivity subtype showed minimal synaptic enrichment but robust enrichment for immune-related pathways (cytokine signaling, innate and adaptive immune response, microglia activation) and transcriptional mechanisms (chromatin organization, gene expression). The mouse findings were then tested in an aggregated human dataset of n = 940 individuals with idiopathic autism and n = 1,036 neurotypical controls drawn from ABIDE repositories and a Child Mind Institute sample. Cross-species decoding identified analogous hypoconnectivity and hyperconnectivity subtypes in the human data, accounting for 25.1% of the aggregated autism cohort (hypoconnectivity n = 74, 7.9%; hyperconnectivity n = 162, 17.2%). The subtypes were highly replicable across discovery and replication splits, were associated with distinct functional network architectures, and recapitulated the synaptic and immune-related pathway enrichments identified in the rodent dataset. The transcriptional enrichment that was robust in the rodent hyperconnectivity subtype did not replicate in the human data — only the immune-related enrichment did — and Pagani et al report this asymmetric replication honestly. Critically for interpretation: Pagani et al explicitly tested whether the two subtypes correspond to severity, demographic, or treatment differences and found that they do not. There were no significant differences between subtypes in IQ, sex, age, medication status, or psychiatric comorbidities. The behavioral difference between subtypes was small (Calibrated Severity Score 7.1 in hyperconnectivity vs 6.1 in hypoconnectivity), and only the social-affect component remained significant after FDR correction. The subtypes are biologically dissociable but not "high-functioning vs low-functioning" — they are different biological signatures producing autism, not different severity tiers. 2.2 What "Immune-Related" Means in Their Paper Because the phrase "immune-related" is frequently misused in popular autism discourse to imply external chemical insult, this paper clarifies what Pagani et al actually mean and does not mean. What they mean: endogenous brain immune signaling. Specifically, microglia activation patterns (microglia are the brain's resident immune cells responsible for synaptic pruning during normal development), cytokine signaling regulating synaptic homeostasis (IL-6 specifically, with prenatal IL-6 exposure documented in their cited Mirabella et al 2021 reference to INCREASE glutamatergic synapse density), innate and adaptive immune response gene expression in neural tissue, and transcriptional regulation of synaptic genes. These are gene expression patterns and signaling mechanisms inside the brain. The "immune" pathway here is the editor of synapses, not an external attacker. What they do not mean: external chemical insult, vaccines, acetaminophen exposure, or any other "harm done to autistic person" attribution. They do not propose these mechanisms anywhere in the paper. They cite Meltzer & Van de Water 2017 on the role of the immune system in ASD as one of multiple factors alongside genetics, not as a sole cause. They explicitly checked enrichment for genes associated with bipolar disorder, psoriasis, dementia, ADHD, and schizophrenia and found no significant enrichment in either subtype — these are autism-specific findings. Their stated research goal is "biologically informed clinical subtyping of the autism spectrum" — better understanding of how autistic brains differ from each other biologically, enabling more targeted research and clinical approaches matched to specific subtypes. This goal is NOHARM-aligned. The framework's reduction confirms and formalizes the responsible-science framing of their work. 2.3 What Their Methodology Can and Cannot See Their methodology — fMRI connectivity analysis paired with gene ontology enrichment — can measure observable connectivity differences and infer underlying biological pathway variation. Stable evolutionary strategy of Homo sapiens (SESH) is built in accordance with the modular and hierarchical principle and consists of the same type of self-replicating elements, i.e. is a system of systems. On the top level of the organization of SESH is the superposition of genetic, social, cultural and techno-rationalistic complexes. The components of this triad differ in the mechanism of cycles of generation - replication - transmission - fixing/elimination of adoptively relevant information. This mechanism is implemented either in accordance (...) with the Darwin-Weismann modus, or according to the Lamarck modus, the difference between them is clear from the title. The integral attribute of the system of systems including ESSH is the production of evolutionary risks. The sources of evolutionary risk for stable adaptive strategy of Homo sapiens are the imbalance of (1) the intra-genomic co-evolution (intragenomic conflicts); (2) the gene-cultural co- evolution; (3) the inter-cultural co-evolution; (4) techno-humanitarian balance; (5) inter- technological conflicts (technological traps). At least phenomenologically the components of the evolutionary risk are reversible, but in the aggregate they are in potentio irreversible destructive ones for bio-social, and cultural self-identity of Homo sapiens. The biggest revolutions in science have begun with someone noticing that facts we already had belonged together. Newton saw that the force pulling an apple to the ground was the same one holding the Moon in its orbit. Maxwell saw that electricity, magnetism, and light were not three separate things but one field wearing three faces. Einstein saw that space and time were not a stage and a clock, but a single geometry. None of them threw away what came before. (...) They reorganised it around a deeper principle. I think there may be one more principle still waiting to be noticed, and this is my attempt to describe it. That principle, if it is real, shows itself on three levels. The first is philosophical, a claim about what information is and how fundamental it may be. The third is cosmological, a frankly speculative claim about intelligence preserving itself across the death of the universe. Starting from the strongest foundations. My question is whether they are all expressions of a single underlying process, whether information is not merely something the universe contains, but one of the things the universe most fundamentally does. And if it is, does something deliberately steer it? Here is the observation that started it for me. As an inventor, I celebrate inventions as though new things appear from nothing. But almost every human achievement is better described as rediscoveries or recombination than creation. Music rearranges frequencies that already exist. Language rearranges sounds. Mathematics discovers relationships rather than inventing them. AI recombines patterns already present in what it was shown. Creativity is not denied, just redefined. The electromagnetic spectrum exists whether or not any eye is there to see it, and visible colour is only a sliver of it. When an artist or a machine dazzles us with something that feels new, it hasn't invented a wavelength beyond physics; it can't create a new colour but it could discover a new one, by simply exploring a combination within a spectrum that is complete. Novelty comes from arrangement, not from creation out of nothing. Chemistry rearranges atoms, biology rearranges molecules, evolution rearranges genomes, technology rearranges knowledge. The fruit bowl is already full, and every intelligence, human or artificial, is just mixing its flavours. If nothing is truly created, only rearranged, then I want to know where it all goes but more importantly, why and where did it come from? My answer is genetics. And the capacity is staggering. Laboratory researchers have encoded books, images, and film into synthetic DNA, using a method called DNA Fountain. Yaniv Erlich and Dina Zielinski reached a density of +- 215 petabytes per gram, and the theoretical ceiling is higher still, near 455 exabytes per gram. Biology solved ultra-dense storage billions of years before we built the first computer. And storage is only the start; information becomes meaningful when it can be copied, read, modified, and passed on, and life does all four. DNA does more than sit there as a molecule. Read what came before, and you begin to wonder how many times this has happened. We will more than likely be able to count the cycles. Long before anyone sequenced a genome, human beings treated the dead body as something that must not simply be annihilated, and the instinct split in two revealing directions. One tradition says preserve the vessel: the Egyptians mummified their dead because they believed the soul needed a recognisable body to return to, a physical archive kept whole against decay. The other says return the code to the earth: Jewish law forbids cremation, and even discourages embalming and above-ground tombs, because the body is held to be made in the image of its maker and only lent to us, so it must be given back whole to the ground, dust to dust, to decompose naturally and rejoin the material it came from.
