I'm not looking for Chromecast but I have a Linux system hooked up to a TV and ether net. I want a way to pick a YouTube or Amazon prime or Netflix video on my phone and display it on the TV via the Linux pc. Is that possible? If so what software can do it?
I don't expect much but I found an old pi I bought probably 2016(may of been 2017). It was supposed to be a pi-hole but was never able to get the dns forwarding to work on my modem. It still works but wanted to somehow convert it to a regular distro(it's based on a micro-SD and I don't have any more microsd readers). I wanted to...
I'll have to check out the ram. I know it boots and network and hdmi work but will have to dig out a spare keyboard to try to log in and see what it can do
Would I be able to run a gui remotely from a Windows pc? I have extra monitors(yes kinda a tech hoarder) but don't have space to setup another full setup. It has raspbian installed(or the pi-hole version they used to have), will have to guess on the password but I think I remember it.
My initial plan was to remotely access it via ssh with putty on the windows system.
Long story, my shield decided to have its network die. I reset it. I replaced the network cable and changed ethernet ports on router but nothing would work (wasn't even getting the lights on the ports). I didn't know if it was the shield or the router so I found the pi and plugged it in. Network immediately worked so I know it's the shield. I was able to find an old Asus nexus Google TV box which "solved" the shield and was thinking of using the pi for something other than just sitting in a box under a bunch of wires.
Wow, I didn't think it would be able to do that much. What "personal things" are you talking about? Storing files? Personal email? Video server? Actually using it as a personal computer? Don't have to say what exactly it is just a rough idea would be nice.
Out of curiosity, I discovered there were other isos on the SD card I could install but the "noob" installer took literally hours to initialize, is that a sign the SD card is going bad?
Yeah, I remember having a full desktop to show videos back in the day(like pre-2005ish). I knew it was more powerful than it seemed but it appears I underestimated it.

Yeah, I tried virtual box on my main system and kept running into odd problems with every distro. For example Debian had a full second of input lag, with 2 cores of a 13th Gen i5 and 16 gb of ram dedicated to it. Kali would install and I ejected the "installation medium" aka the iso and reboot and the virtual box couldn't see any bootable drive. I tried fedora and it kept freezing on installing(sat at like 35% for over 3 hours)
Yeah I'm thinking my SD card is failing... I know it's slow but I tried to do a fresh install in recovery 7 hours ago and it's still initialing the "noob" installer.
Supposedly I was thinking to small, I was thinking like trying to use nmap to discover all ip addresses on my lan or load vim to practice vim motions (I get the idea but I'm still too slow put in alot of commands cause I'm like ok... Up 10 lines, ok, up is.. Look on cheat sheet... I... then number of lines... That was 10...look on cheat sheet... Oh just enter 10...it didn't work... Figure out because it's not ingrained in my head the time looking at a cheat sheet is making commands time out).
Yeah the problem is I don't have a card reader on my main desktop and I tried a bunch of my old passwords and none worked so I was just going to reimage it.
Microsoft can never name products... Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox one, Xbox series x, Xbox series s... Hell I'm currently watching agdq and can't tell you the best one, imagine a grandmother trying to buy a gift for her grandchild. Atleast it's Playstation 1, Playstation 2, Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Playstation 5 obvious which one is newest. Or Windows 3.1, nt, 3.1 with workgroups, 95, 98, 2000, me, xp, 7, vista, 8, 10, 11...wtf?
I tend to like every other one... 3.1, 98, 2000, xp, 7, 10...maybe 12?well see of the pattern continues.
I find Microsoft releases a good os... Gets drunk and comes up with crazy ideas... Refines ideas into usable os.... Gets drunk and more crazy ideas... Repeat
I didn't consider direct x to Xbox connection but it makes sense... After the initial release it's insane. You want to be next generations idea of gaming, make it understandable to a non-gamer cause they are likely buying it. Hell Nintendo entertainment system vs super Nintendo entertainment system... Which is better? Which will make your granddaughter or grandson happy?
Only downside is with global warming and no air conditioning the studios they use are typically warmer then people are used to, as a result you won't see many of their talents wearing sweaters or jackets...

Yup, well first time for one of the big stages. I believe they have done YouTube on some of the smaller events like femme fetals and black in a flash as a "test" of their setup to ensure it would work right for the big event.
So many job applications suck...i tried to fill out one with a required "social media link" but didn't have any place to enter one. It had "LinkedIn url" and the next line was a text box, it had "github url" and the next line was a text box, it had "social media link" and the next line was just a submit button... There was literally no box to enter a social media url. I tried chrome, Firefox and Vivaldi because the job seemed good with good pay but literally impossible to apply to.
Nevermind I don't know why you need LinkedIn, github, and social media links to evaluate me as an employee but atleast give me a way to enter the data you want.
Oh I didn't even think of that... That's evil but I kinda like the idea. That said there a notice that there are issues would be nice. Imagine applying for webdev role and on the first page it says "there are several issues with this application, being able to find the errors and correct them is considered a part of the interview process"
My favorite was the company I worked for had yearly trainings including that I was not allowed to bribe foreign heads of state... Bitch I am trying to figure how to afford dinner?? Does King Charles accept change, I maybe able to find a dime...
One thing I wish one of the grocery list apps could do was to store recipes, then you choose which recipes you want that day/week/month whenever you go shopping, it's smart enough to know if 3 recipes need flour only put flour on once, then go through and mark ingredients you already have.
Like I can put in a recipe for penne alla vodka or fettuccine alfrado then if I select penne alla vodka it adds :
Penne pasta
Vodka sauce
Heavy cream
Mozzarella cheese
Parmesan cheese
Sausage
Etc to the list. Then I say actually I already have heavy cream and mark it as not needed.
Do you know of anything that does this? I'm kinda tempted to sketch out a plan to do it myself but I already have a totally different project I'm working on and struggling with.
Yeah but I'm not even asking for that. I literally want a "start recipe" button... I enter each ingredient in separate text boxes... Optional "instruction" box to paste the instructions... Later I decide "on Tuesday let's have home made pizza, then on Wednesday we'll do beef tips and noodles" and I click a check box or type in recipe name, system sees ingredients I previously entered for that recipe and adds it to grocery list.
No web scrapping or parsing needed. I will enter the ingredients for each recipe but I only want to enter it once
Just looked into this, there is a android version and seems to be similar to what I want. Thanks for the recommendation. Can you tell me what the advantage of paying for it is?

I've been considering just making a spam email vs my regular email. I know there are "temporary" email services but they don't always apply. For example you are at a store and the say "you get a 5% if you give your email" and you want to use one of those one time emails what are you supposed to do? Stand there, take out your phone, "one sec, let me just spin up a email address to give you".
Thinking of just creating a email account on say hotmail(just for the lols) and direct everything likely to spam me there. There is the argument "they will still track you and sell your data to advertisers who will send spam to that account". Yeah but 1.why do I care if I never check the account? 2. If I use Hotmail all it will do is cause increase cost to Microsoft so double win?
But what advantage does that have over just having 1 email account which you never check and only receives spam?
The only advantage I can see is maybe in several years it gets enough email that it fills up the free storage and I have to go delete everything twice a decade(being generous) but otherwise???
Any place which uses phone numbers, use your local area code plus 867-5309 it works surprisingly often. Jenny probably has a bunch of points at 7/11...
You are sorta right but missing the idea of inheritance. A man in Kentucky with enough resources to move probably didn't live in a trailer park or likely didn't go to public school. He was raised with a tutor and in "that house" in the town.
Moving doesn't make you a better person but if you have the means your child is not growing up in that culture, maybe Kentucky but not in a trailer...
True, as I think about it, it may be an inverse parabolic function. Low wealth is lots of kids(need help to survive) , sustainable wealth low kids(I can support myself but no more) , high wealth high kids(I'm so great my genes must be passed on and I have the means to do so) ...
In a lot of places a parent working is basically pointless if they pay for childcare. A daycare near me was 600 a week. And that was only from 330(after school got out) to 600. If you work 9-5 but school gets out at 330 about 15 dollars per hour of your pay goes to daycare. If you make less than 20 an hour is that even worth working?
Is there a Chromecast equivalent?
