it ocr's the image and checks if it contains a long number and the word "anonymous".

yes really

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

bazzite is probably the better choice.

you can most likely get all of the same benefits from your existing install, though. just need the right configuration.

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

really? i thought one of the main benefits of gamescope was that it can be nested inside an existing DE?

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

...what kind of brain damage did the rep have to think that was a viable defense? surely their human customer service personnel are also responsible for their own actions?

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

sure but there was no way that wouldn't have been thrown out.

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

...do you not know how strikes work?

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

then join a union! they can supplement your pay when on strike.

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

why not?

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

i mean national unions exist to strengthen the local chapters.

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

but i mean... the entire reason unions work is because of a mandate from the masses. if they close an office the only reasonable counter-action is for every other office to unionise too.

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

medical fields usually have some sort of clause that prevents complete strike, like the postal service. you can still strike but in that case it's without union authorisation.

here the metalworker's union is paying striking workers at tesla 125% of their regular salary and have the funds to continue doing that for about 200 years.

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

from what i hear there are unions everywhere in the us. why are they not doing anything?

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

and there's no generic one? crazy

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

number of unions != number of members

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

nobody is keeping people from organising. sanctioned organising, yes. but that right was only granted due to unsanctioned organising in the first place.

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

no i'm reading everything you're saying but it seems to me like it's one of those "it doesn't work in the us because x" arguments. yes you've been oppressed, yes the laws have been written against you, yes the odds are bad. do it anyway.

openrct2 is a thing

sweden hasn't had residential power lines on poles since like the 70's. when i visited north america in 2008 i was shocked by the aerial rats' nests everywhere.

lime , (edited )
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

idk where that place pulls from but i pay $.08/kWh. when i lived further north it was $0.02.

there was a period where the prices went to what you quoted but that was in connection to the nord stream sabotage where germany's prices skyrocketed and ours were dragged up along with them.

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

okay? i'm just checking my power bills.

lime , (edited )
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

sweden is split into four "electricity zones", from north to south. the prices seem to match those in zone 4, in the very very south.

Edit:

https://elen.nu/

here is the current price for each zone in öre/kWh (an öre is 1/100th of a krona). divide by 10 and you get cents, ish.

for reference the current spot price when converted is $0.12/kWh. more than i pay but i have a fixed kWh price.

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

okay? we don't bury high-voltage lines, if that's what you're implying.

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

the us has higher population density than sweden.

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

just like sweden.

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

all the power generation is in the north

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

i mean we still have aerial lines for high voltage.

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

we don't really get storms like that.

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

then why does geographical location matter?

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

is there supposed to be an image in your comment? anyway, some more specific numbers then.

the stockholm region, the most populated area of sweden, is a bit less than twice the size of the city of houston TX, with about the same population of 2.3 million people. but the population density of the area is about 1/4th that of houston, at 380/km^2^ compared to 1400.

meanwhile the norrbotten region, the most sparsely populated area, is just above alaska in population density.

my family's house is in a village of around seven households. we have our own well and septic tank. power lines are still underground.

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

that also sounds like sweden

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

gopher predates http, of course it didn't have certificates.

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

it's been unchanged because http got more popular.

there is a vocal part of the indieweb that does not want encrypted communication because it increases the system requirements, and because it disincentivises sending sending any sensitive information. i don't really agree with that assessment but i do think there is something to not sending stuff you don't need.

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

i have a xaphoon

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

yeah corporate environments continue to be a pain point. IT wants centralised management a la intune/GPE, i want to be able to use proper terminal tools for automation.

last time it came to a head i moved into a vm and refused to come out for two years.

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

it's 300TB

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

minecraft?

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

ah, usually the creative aspect draws people in but i know not everyone is that way.

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar
lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

i'm waiting for a create-like mod before jumping.

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

but the us doesn't recognise the icc.

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

reading the manual is sort of compulsory if you want to do stuff like changing DEs, and for most people (read: the 99% that don't know what "operating system" means) the mere existence of a choice is enough to cause paralysis.

i really do like the new wave of "opinionated" distros like kalpa, cachy and aeon where the system takes care of most issues rather than the user having to deal with them. shows maturity. but this selector screen sort of runs contrary to that. either be opinionated or be fully free, imo.

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

idk if you've ever tried to guide people unfamiliar with computers through troubleshooting over the phone, but my experience is that the more explanations are given the more they despair, and the more choices are given the more confused they get.

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

yeah but that's a step removed. if i'm helping someone set up a machine i will usually make the media beforehand, but they need to be present to set up their name and password.

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

of course but it doesn't help the "this isn't that hard" case.

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

cringe

lime ,
@lime@feddit.nu avatar

when you install a DE as part of system setup it's usually preconfigured by the distro maintainers. otherwise you need to do that configuration yourself, which is more difficult.
