Let's use AI to replace the missing CEOs when we compost billionaires!!!

anzo ,
@anzo@programming.dev avatar

Only that they give you the mere gesture of a carrot: the american "dream".

Get out of bed, wokies!!

A generation taught not to think: AI in the classroom

Across the world schools are wedging AI between students and their learning materials; in some countries greater than half of all schools have already adopted it (often an "edu" version of a model like ChatGPT, Gemini, etc), usually in the name of preparing kids for the future, despite the fact that no consensus exists around...

anzo ,
@anzo@programming.dev avatar

This. (Offline too.)

Which generation did we really taught critical thinking to? In general, those "thinkers" or people with nice research skills (e.g. reading comprehension and other traits) were always a minority within each generation. And I agree there will be less now with AI. But we have no polls or measurement, so the title goes a little clickbaity, in resonance to the generalized discomfort towards a new technology that schools haven't accomodated yet (e.g. all kind of solutions are seen in the wild)

I reckon it was the same with arithmetislcs and calculators in the past. We were able to deal with that! (so that whatever proportion of people that graduates knowing arithmetics with each generation didn't shrink "too much".)

If we are considering possible scenarios, let's be optimistic too.

AI (discounting other problems like their ecological footprint) may not be that bad on our educational systems once we adjust...

F*ck those nazi apologists. Instead of framework rather get a linux laptop e.g. starlabs. Oh, repairability... Yeah, it hurts me too.

I love Python because it's actually the second best language to do anything. For concurrency, Go is better. Also, you are terribly naive to judge a language only by its syntax.

I don't like those projects either. Scuttlebut and cjdns looked more "profesional" to my ignorant eyes. I bring these up because I'd like to hear your comments. I will check 10fingers now...

Researchers Are Hunting America for Hidden Datacenters ( www.404media.co )

A team of researchers at Epoch AI, a non-profit research institute, are using open-source intelligence to map the growth of America’s datacenters. The team pores over satellite imagery, building permits, and other local legal documents to build a map of the massive computer filled buildings springing up across the United...

I believe "secret" is a better word, it conveys the intention of hiding them as executed by the corporate owners with the government's compliance

I hope this doesn't ruin peoples lifes. And if it affects anyone in Canada, I hope their revisit those laws on environmental pollution. There's a reason why all the mining companies are in that country. Ecocide in third world countries is driven by that "blind spot" in their laws and I'm certain the majority of canadians don't have the least idea of their complicity.

She's giving you the most difficult life lesson. I am almost 40 and to this day I dread to 'actively hear' many words my dad has to say about me or my decisions. It's a difficult lesson because they are our caregivers and as such they did many good deeds. But at some point we need to put our own mental health above anyone else's rant, rage, or toxicity. We don't owe them shit. After that leap, you may be able to come back to the issue that they were addressing with their comments and reflect upon the issue itself on your own and/ or with the help of others (friends, therapist, chatgpt?? I wouldn't recommend the latter but it may be a good starting point and better than nothing..)

Nah bro. They are joking as per the post. All these are lyrics in Hannah Montana songs!

This can mean anything, it's possible they wanted just 1 platform so that their expertise is focused. And android being a little more open may have been seen (biased) as a disadvantage (i.e. enemies are more prone to find a vulnerability). We can argue with it. It's like the counterpart of people thinking that open source is per default more safe because of being open source... It's a correlation that can't prove anything..

anzo ,
@anzo@programming.dev avatar

It's like if you went to a restaurant without ordering any dessert. Fine. Next time, you can also cook at home. "Enjoy yourself".

anzo ,
@anzo@programming.dev avatar

And it mattered to the death person while they still where alive. There's a tradition and it's safe to assume we only change it when consent was given previously. Like some people may write in their will if they wanted a poetic or special treatment

@anzo@programming.dev avatar

Since when are we getting so heated debates about fascism? Trump has ICE, and no one discussed if he wasn't facist before that. Learn to see the cues. Elimination of competing political rivals is just one aspect.

Plus, if we were to look for a definition, might as well take one that accounts for understanding that facist regimes are, beyond all, a process. See for example the text by George Orwell: ‘What is Fascism?’ (1944)

By ‘Fascism’ they mean, roughly speaking, something cruel, unscrupulous, arrogant, obscurantist, anti-liberal and anti-working-class. Except for the relatively small number of Fascist sympathizers, almost any English person would accept ‘bully’ as a synonym for ‘Fascist’. That is about as near to a definition as this much-abused word has come.

But Fascism is also a political and economic system. Why, then, cannot we have a clear and generally accepted definition of it? Alas! we shall not get one — not yet, anyway. To say why would take too long, but basically it is because it is impossible to define Fascism satisfactorily without making admissions which neither the Fascists themselves, nor the Conservatives, nor Socialists of any colour, are willing to make. All one can do for the moment is to use the word with a certain amount of circumspection and not, as is usually done, degrade it to the level of a swearword.

anzo ,
@anzo@programming.dev avatar

And I wouldn't say the use here is just a swearword. Saying Iran is under a fascist regime should unite us to identify a problem, the suffering of their population. Do not allow semantics to be one another reason why we are fighting among us, the people with radical decency.

anzo ,
@anzo@programming.dev avatar

This. I have started to wonder if yawns are actually a way to wake up. We know little about them. Some brain scans showed that we refresh the blood around our brain, like changing the water in a fish bowl.

Please help me under stand my spouse's gift and their hurt

For my birthday, my spouse got me a nicer newer expensive version of a thing I already have. The one I have is older and dented but works just fine. I use it weekly. I never complain about it. I've never asked for a newer one. The one I have was given to me by my mother in law, whom I adore. It's sentimental....

This is kinda off-topic to this community. I will lock the conversation, feel free to crosspost (if not done already) to the proper space (I know, the audience is shared between both, but still...)

anzo ,
@anzo@programming.dev avatar

For context, and to help with the semantics, allow me to add that 1 million seconds is 12 days. Meanwhile, 1 billion seconds is around 31 years. So, fairphone CEO can hardly be a billionaire. They do have profit, sure. We all make a living, their is way higher than average but still far from those 'unicorns' we call billionaires.

Ps. I'm with you since your first comment. You just got downvoted because it was being too snarky. Thankfully other user replied showing all the bad things Valve has (while, as we all know, having 1 tangentially-nice thing which is that they used Linux for their products)

Valve Announces New Steam Machine, Steam Controller & Steam Frame

Fwiw, GOG has no DRM for their titles (its own niche space, not competition). Not sure if they charge 30% too, but even in such case they're giving you more because of the lack of DRM.

Steam is quite virtuous, they gave us Proton. But is far from being based.

anzo ,
@anzo@programming.dev avatar

Yeah, I was very surprised to see the only upgrade is a generous storage from 512 GiB to 2 TiB... I would rather build my own PC, spend a little extra, cover other needs I have (zfs pool for videos), and get a good GPU that I can always replace for a newer one in a few years... But of course, that's just me. That new GPU could easily cost as much as the Steam Machine itself, hehe. Of course, it would be way more powerful..

anzo ,
@anzo@programming.dev avatar

Arch linux ARM (the base of such steam os) has existed for a while now. Not to diminish Valve efforts, just putting in some context.

anzo ,
@anzo@programming.dev avatar

Owncloud Infinite Scale is a rewrite of owncloud that seems right to me. Hopefully we are going to see something similar. This press release says almost nothing of their plans... to me it's making them look just worse.

anzo ,
@anzo@programming.dev avatar

Imho, a Linux phone would help. Banning encryption is only possible because of GAFAM and their tie over "our" devices. Like android phones loosing sideloading. Meanwhile snikket.org would be a very illegal app in such dystopian future.

"Allow me to interject and explain the four liberties..." (Or, goto fsfe.org/freesoftware )

If I understand correctly the biggest issue for FFMPEG and other projects is not only the Google and Microsoft that use them without giving back, but their chosen License. They gave permission to corporations to do this. One of the potential ways to fix this situation, is to change the license. For example from LGPL to AGPL. And then they can sell the legalese package of allowing them to break their license. The biggest difficulty is that, as a project, they'd need consent from every past and future contributors. So, yeah. I get it. This is a mess.

It would be way more easier if more corporations donated to open source projects... There's too much labour that's invisible

anzo ,
@anzo@programming.dev avatar

Some GPLv2 projects monetize by selling: support, extension via custom features, or simply the permission for a commercial use. This is possible, and it's what I called "the legalese package". Imagine ffmpeg being able to charge every year any amount they want to the biggest clients, like GAFAM. Yet you're still able to use it non commercially... To be fair, there're some middle uses, that get the disadvantage of having to break the license or ask for permission. For example, if you create anything with ffmpeg, then as an indie dev you'd need to launch your product breaking the license or paying them... But even so, situation is manageable (e.g. ffmpeg could spare you and/ or give a 1 year permission to small businesses)

The goal is on documentation itself. There's technical stuff that I do, combining the docs of 2 or more software pieces. These don't have much space anywhere. At some point, I have been doing this with the assistance of AI. That's why I started to wonder, maybe it's not worth the effort... But that's a negative thought I might just put aside. I am very thankful for all the inspiring and motivating answers I am getting here.

I was thinking on hosting a static site, renting my own VPS. I always write in markdown, so pandoc would suffice (even if it were just a starting point...) Since I'd be using markdown, the content is highly transferable (e.g. when I wanted to move onto Publii, Ghost or other engine).

In your case, I'd recommend checking https://writefreely.org/

the only loss here is my time as a moderator :P

I am not banning anyone, you were quite civil in this "fight" ^1^

Do keep in mind that all this has a lot of "editor wars" vibes. But the conflict goes beyond Debian (e.g. including Rust in Linux kernel), and actual harmful discussions between Rust and C/C++ people is REAL, damaging our communities, and very much driven by generations/ network-effect. And this is just sad. It's not a technical issue, and overcoming it seems nearly impossible at the moment.

--

^1^ I'd call it discussion, but it seems to me that 'whoever loves Digit' was ranting more on their own behalf... as per their own words:

Awareness should be raised for this stuff, because people are sadly not as concerned as they should be about the state of cybersecurity right now. It's particularly an issue in Linux / FOSS circles where there seems to be more of a false sense of security these days.

I agree with these words, but not all you said (specifically, backdoors to me are a smaller concern in the software industry nowadays in comparison to the Redishell provided that you were unable to fully understand). Anyway, I don't see reason to remove any of the most downvoted comments you have. But I will take the opportunity here to raise a warning to you. OR, let's make it a personal advice: arguing on the internet is not worth the emotional toll. As with any advice, you can either take it or leave it. Good luck!

Here's your reply to Redishell. You answered "To anyone confused: [...]" and went on and on talking about backdoors.

anzo Mod ,
@anzo@programming.dev avatar

I am not saying this as a moderator: you're person of obnoxious answers. Probably far too intelligent to even consider that you're actually interacting with other human beings that may not want to engage or sacrifice their time with your rants. But I don't ban based on personality.

Anyway, I don't have to answer any of your questions. Typing comes too fast on your keyboard. Try stepping away, read, click the links (like redishiel CVE), take a deep breath, live more calmly.

I will post a reply to you reply on Redishell. So that you can check again what happened there. You went too fast and hit your own wall.

If your experience tells you the open source community is less vulnerable to backdoors or something, reconsider that.

I only said that I agreed with you in those words...

Do you think backdoors are the only threat? or the biggest?? in both cases, you'd be wrong. That's the whole point in this exchange of opinions.

anzo ,
@anzo@programming.dev avatar

Cure for what? That's a fascist argument. I am not accusing you. Just wanted to inform. I was intellectualizing like that once: if all humans die, life on the planet would thrive, species that go extinct wouldn't be an issue we would only be seeing it as a product of the evolution of more biodiversity for sure...

Yet... A friend pointed out, that such disease is just a theorization and reality has shown that this kind of scenarios are lived in, for example, catastrophes. In those cases, the world ending event hits harder to the most vulnerable. Typically, the poorest fraction. Billionaire and other rich people will have resources, bunkers, time, and so on... They may even be saved.

And this is actually their agenda in, for example, climate change denialism and inaction.

That's one reason why elites don't care about the ecocide.

self-hosting implies making the service available for yourself with tunnels or port forwards. Yet, I've been running searxng container and accessing it via localhost without issues. I could write a guide and share my docker compose file..

It's been communal tradition ever since ThePirateBay got into these "DNS wars" and "Domain switching". In the end, TPB kind of faded out. But same practice goes for many pirate sites. That's the point :) so, be aware it's a great way to find URLs for these o7
