U.S. senators are probing whether Big Tech data centers are driving up local electricity bills by socializing grid upgrade costs onto residents. Some of the tactics they're using include NDAs, shell companies, and lobbying. Ars Technica reports:...
So, basically, I kinda don't like very much to have an immutable distro, there are things I don't really like about steam OS but the immutability makes it so if can't really change it, for starters, I kinda don't like at all dolphin, and would prefer to use nemo, but is my understanding that next time valve pushes an update, all...
Bazzite is immutable but uses rpm-ostree which means you can install basically any yum/dnf system packages and have them persist. It should be used sparingly but it's much more flexible than SteamOS because of it. I customize my own Bazzite-Gnome image to layer in a few packages but I'd consider that pretty advanced.
I just set up a rule on my firewall to disallow outgoing web traffic from my TV so I can still control it over the wifi. Then if I want to sell it I haven't broken any functionality.
It seemed really surreal to me so I asked about it, apparently they have hours for people on the spectrum to make it more comfortable for them. As far as I know, I'm not on the spectrum but this environment was soooooo calming. It was like being at a spa. Is this not something everyone enjoys or should I consider getting checked...
This used to work for me but unfortunately at least two places I haven't been able to figure out any button combination that mutes them which has been infuriating.
TLDR: I learned the hard way that, at some point, my nightly backups were switched to being encrypted. As far as I can tell, it seems like it was part of an update and not a lot of users noticed it. Thankfully (and concerningly?), the key is stored in plain text if you can recover data from your SD card....
Oof. Yeah when storing encryption keys for backup media it's also important to remember to store the key in a place that is accessible when your services are down (like they could be at the time you're needing to restore a backup).
I've definitely screwed up and realized that a key I needed was stored in a credential database that was stored on the encrypted backup I was trying to restore. I was able to access another copy but it slowed me down.
For a long time, I used Syncthing for my Joplin notes. It was running as a Docker image on my TrueNAS server. The notes themselves were on the TrueNAS server, and from there, Syncthing would sync it to my PC and laptop, for example....
What do you mean by 'desyncing' issues. I use Syncthing very heavily across my servers and workstations and I don't have any trouble. I run my own Syncthing relay server for NAT traversal.
Silicon Valley has sold the idea of tech in classrooms for years, because they get access to lifelong customers and valuable data. But while corporations like Google make billions, student test scores are falling.
Businesses are happy to have their employees be more productive without having to pay for expensive new licenses... But eventually they're going to find out that letting all your employees share swaths of private data with random websites is not a great idea.
They are. Lots of motherboards still include these. There are a lot of special PS/2 input devices that are still around in business/industrial settings and gamers sometimes need them for use with flight sticks, steering wheels, mechanical keyboards etc.
Usually it's a combo port now instead of a separate port for keyboard/mouse.
And omg! I have slept on this feature for so long. I assumed it was just dragging windows to corners and they snap on to the left or right back or top....
Ring founder Jamie Siminoff is back at the helm of the surveillance doorbell company, and with him is the surveillance-first-privacy-last approach that made Ring one of the most maligned tech devices. Not only is the company reintroducing new versions of old features which would allow police to request footage directly from Ring...
I want the Ubiquiti Doorbell Pro (wired Ethernet) but it's always sold out. Plus I've been hesitant to spend ion a Cloud Gateway or Dream Machine. I just wish I could use my own storage.
Thank you. It looks like this is sort of working in that I can get the additional buttons to show up in Steam now but I'm hitting what I think is a bug where the 'Enable Extended Buttons' toggle doesn't stay enabled. After searching a bit it seems like I'm not the only one but maybe that will get worked out soon.
Fast storage is one of the cheapest components of modern PCs so I'm always surprised when Flatpak file size is brought up. It's not something I worry about very much.
Despite facing increased competition in the space, not least from the Epic Games Store, Valve's platform is synonymous with PC gaming. The service is estimated to have made $10.8 billion in revenue during 2024, a new record for the Half-Life giant. Since it entered the PC distribution space back in 2018, the rival Epic Games...
So can developers just 'create' steam keys out of thin air that can be used to activate their game on steam? Does Valve get paid when the keys are created or activated? Or not at all?
Seems fair maybe if it's using all of Steams infrastructure, considering developers can distribute the game themselves without steam keys.
Yeah that's a pretty important distinction. I can buy Rimworld from the Steam store, or I can buy a Rimworld Steam key straight from the Ludeon website for the same price or I can buy a DRM copy for less I just won't get Steam features like automatic updates, cloud saves, or the mod workshop.
Seems reasonable they don't want you using the platform for distribution while undercutting the storefront price.
seriously though unless you actually NEED the size constraint, get an e-waste their laptop and put Debian on it instead of buying a single board computer. there's a bajillion windows 8.1 lappies going into landfill every second that you could turn into funny little servers
Consider buying used hardware from an office. Lots of places sell used gear for dirt cheap. A used office desktop with a used GPU from the last 3 years or so would be a massive upgrade without spending much.
Steam Deck is still a good deal for what it is though, but I wouldn't use it as a primary workstation.

I'm using the last known Yuzu build. The game works fine other wise but would definitely like to run it at 60fps. Also, if there's a new Yuzu fork or a better emulator to use do let me know.
If you're playing BotW I'd recommend emulating the Wii U version using Cemu. Performance is way better overall but you'll still need to enable a 60fps mod.
I know I remember seeing some people talk about how nice some of the environments in Hitman were, and that they'd just walk around as a tourist from time to time, treating it like a walking simulator/virtual tourism thing instead of the stealth assassination game it is. Curious about other things like that, where you play a game...
The updated fluid mechanics are a lot more forgiving and basically have infinite throughput. It's still a whole new layer of complexity but doesn't have nearly as many confusing limitations as it used to.
Mutual aid spam is becoming a problem on the Fediverse.
And to be sure, I'm not against mutual aid. What I am against is spam.
This person has not verified who she is -- or even if the profile picture is hers. Additional research on her name states she is a scammer with a record of grifting. I am therefore skeptical that any donations will help anyone in need.
Folks, please be cautious with mutual aid requests. Yes, people sometimes need help. But people also lie.
Not trying to change your mind on giving money to internet grifters but having a cell phone is pretty much a basic tool of survival these days even if you're destitute. Phones more than a couple years old are basically e-waste and cost nothing or are donated/trashed all the time. Even a WiFi only phone can be the best tool someone has to find shelter, food and get important weather updates.
