I'm probably in the 5-6 area. Maybe a toe into 7.

I don't have access to my server right now, but it's around 20 containers on my little N100 box.

As a Dane, this has been frightening for years. I hope our government thinks of open source solutions, instead of just a european company over a US one.

Ho much does the screenshot you posted say, that the screenshots on the Mint download page does not? Other than giving you more options, which can overwhelm new people.

Some distro's really like doing their curated live environment for each environment, so you can test it out before actually installing it.

Strit ,
@Strit@lemmy.linuxuserspace.show avatar

Sure, but presenting DE choice inside the install will confuse the mythical new user.

But I agree with you. A lot of download bandwidth and hosting storage could be saved by doing what Cachy/Endeavour ISO's are doing.

@Strit@lemmy.linuxuserspace.show avatar

Sounds like you want something like X11 forwarding. I have never used it, but I believe it is proper remote desktop, not sharing.

Never heard of ArchCraft before. No interest in it now.

I haven't tried ElementaryOS in years. It was always too opinionated for me.

But glad they are still releasing updated ISO's.

I ran Linux at work up until recently where I found out that they are in the process of changing the network setup, so only systems with a valid certificate can access the network. And they have no plan to support Linux in that setup. So I was kind of forced to switch back to Windows, because my work requires that I can access the local network.

Other than that, I used Linux in a Microsoft Entra/Intune environment with Edge, Teams and Office 365 for a couple of years.

How is there not a ubiquitous modding platform for Linux yet?

So all the talk is that Linux is great for gaming now, and tbf, it has come a long way. But there's a good portion of people like me and my friends who still regularly use windows because we love modding the crap out of all of our favorite games and that's just not feasible on Linux, vortex doesn't work and most modloaders have...

The (successful) end of the kernel Rust experiment ( lwn.net )

The topic of the Rust experiment was just discussed at the annual Maintainers Summit. The consensus among the assembled developers is that Rust in the kernel is no longer experimental — it is now a core part of the kernel and is here to stay. So the "experimental" tag will be coming off. Congratulations are in order for all of...

This means that drivers written in Rust will have just a good a chance to be accepted as drivers written in C?

I usually create ~/git/{github,gitlab,codeberg,AUR,etc} where I clone the git stuff I need.

The rest is usually handled by my nextcloud that creates the ~/Nextcloud folder.

I really dislike LLMs/AI but.......

So, I have an automation that checks the month and applies a scene accordingly. I could never get it to work quite right though. Every time it was supposed to trigger a specific scene, it would just default to a base scene. I ran it through DDG AI and it found a single line that was causing the "choose" to fail and defaulted to...

Strit ,
@Strit@lemmy.linuxuserspace.show avatar

I sometimes use LLM's to help me troubleshoot. I usually don't ask for solutions, but rather "what is wrong here?" type stuff.

has often saved me hours of troubleshooting, but it is occasionally wrong and sees flaws where there is none.

Joke answer: get the IINA devs to release a Linux build.

More seriously: MPV is pretty close and might even be able to be configured to what you want. But seriously though. Sounds like you need/want exactly this UI, so you should ask the IINA devs to make a Linux build.

Does anyone know how to make the Arch text bigger?

I'm a macbro who's been using the terminal for eight years. I downloaded an Archlinux VM for UTM (macOS Tahoe) and I like it, I just wish the text was bigger. I know you don't get Arch because of its snazzy UI, you do it so you can do....Idk, cool 1337 h4x0r shit? I seriously don't know, you guys, I've only been an Arch user for...

Strit ,
@Strit@lemmy.linuxuserspace.show avatar

i just noticed that the “make text bigger” shortcut that works for my mac terminal didn’t work with arch

That's because in MacOS it's a terminal emulator, a GUI application with a CLI inside.

In Arch, if you didn't install a desktop environment, the terminal is the raw TTY, not an emulator, so it does not have reszing/zoom options.

But as @anon5621@lemmy.ml avatar anon5621 mentioned, you can set the font of the TTY to a bigger font using the setfont command.

Maybe the wiki has some useful information:

I use a rolling release for mainly 3 reasons.

  1. Faster access to new (shiny) software/applications. Flatpak and the like could solve this for LTS distros.
  2. Security updates come faster and smoother.
  3. Less chance of an update breaking things. Lots of small and frequent updates, instead of rare and large update packs/stacks.
Strit ,
@Strit@lemmy.linuxuserspace.show avatar

Good point. Yes. Small breakage means it's easier to fix.
Although, the years I've run my rolling release system, I've had it break maybe one of two times. Easily fixed. Both of those was because there was a change that needed a manual intervention, which I did not read about until after, so those were my own fault.

Strit ,
@Strit@lemmy.linuxuserspace.show avatar

I would love to do something like this, also for a mirror backlight, but my bathroom only has 1 outlet, placed in a cubbard above the sink. I can't get anything from there, unless I want wires all over my bathroom walls and some long ones at that.

I've read that Qnap is often using ZFS as the storage filesystem. If your bazzite does not have the tools installed to work with that, then it will probably show as unallocated or unknown.

Strit ,
@Strit@lemmy.linuxuserspace.show avatar

Still have a ConBee 2 for zigbee and it works fine in my house. Although I do have a fair amount of smart plugs, that act as repeaters, around the house.

As someone else mentioned, this does not seem to be an issue with the DynDNS itself. But rather the fact that your ISP changes your IP regularly (DHCP, non-static IP).
I would really recommend you get a static IP from your ISP. DNS lookups should never fail after that.

Strit ,
@Strit@lemmy.linuxuserspace.show avatar

Sure, but until their DNS records update, the server is unreachable at the domain address.

[Help] display managers with transparent backgrounds, showing the desktop itself?

I want a display manager that shows the desktop as the background, instead of a background image or video. I'm thinking of auto-logging in on boot, and adding another startup command to Hyprland to lock the desktop and show the display manger. My searches didn't yield anything. The closest I could find is hyprlock which blurs...

Strit ,
@Strit@lemmy.linuxuserspace.show avatar

Display managers handles sessions. A "desktop" is a session and if none are started yet, how can it display it?

Lockscreen and display managers are two different things. They are not the same and does not have the same functionality.

Ghost needs emails for a couple of reasons.

  1. (Required) Ghost does not do user passwords. They use magtic links, which they send out via email when signing in. It's just how they have chosen to do it. You can ask them why they don't want to save passwords.

  2. (Optional) Ghost has a newsletter function. If you enable it, you need to setup a bulk email service, like Mailgun. Even regular SMTP won't really work there. It can send out a newsletter everytime a blog post is published, so the members will get notified.

I recently had to do this email dance with a Ghost instance setup, where most of the email ports are blocked on the network. I know how you feel. I also wanted to just use passwords, but not currently possible with Ghost.

Other services might do the same as Ghost. I do host many services, that does not require email setup though.

The reason this might work is that some shells, like zsh, interpretes the questionmark in the URL as a function of some sort, making the URL invalid to yt-dlp.

Strit ,
@Strit@lemmy.linuxuserspace.show avatar

self hosted are the first 2 words in the question...

Strit ,
@Strit@lemmy.linuxuserspace.show avatar

One of the best ways to reduce power consumption on older laptops is to change the HDD to an SDD.

But don't expect to get below 10W on an old laptop.

I'm also interested in knowing this. I have a couple of sensors that require usb-c power.

My current solution is a long'ish usb-c cable to an adapter from the nearest outlet. 😒

@Strit@lemmy.linuxuserspace.show avatar

At least Framework disclosed this issue and are pushing out fixes.

Critters in the crawl space

We've been having trouble with rodents (I assume squirrels) in the crawl spaces on our second floor. I decided to stick a PIR sensor on the door to see if I could catch any movement, and sure enough, a bunch of movement around 1 AM this morning. (Correction, it was a possum, which makes sense in hindsight as they're nocturnal).

Strit ,
@Strit@lemmy.linuxuserspace.show avatar

As long as the sensor only picks up stuff that's rat-size or larger then it's fine. If there are something "large" down there, it can be a hazard to the house foundation. I'd say it's better to know. 😉

Seems most of these Wintel boxes are Intel Celeron/Atom based, so it should be able to run just about any Linux OS.

    Or, if it's not just a faulty file, but a faulty firmware release, don't update to this version.

    Strit ,
    @Strit@lemmy.linuxuserspace.show avatar

    Which they do here. Once you upgrade to 10.11, your database is not 10.10 compatible anymore. So you can't downgrade without restoring a backup.

    I have to disagree.

    The inverted cursor is part of the default Windows mouse cursor themes.

    @OP I don't think it's a default on any Linux Desktop Environments though. But you might be able to find a theme that does this.
    Perhaps a relevant forum post, that mentioned a keyboard shortcut to quickly locate your cursor.

    Strit ,
    @Strit@lemmy.linuxuserspace.show avatar

    I wouldn't count "selecting a different theme" as customizing. But yes, seems we do agree.

    It's not its primary focus, but if you have it for audiobooks already, it's a no-brianer.

    Dell Latitude Touchpad Deadzone and Fingerprint

    I recently got my hands on a Dell Latitude E7470 and installed Fedora Workstation. Even though I enabled two finger scroll (and disabled touchpad edge scroll), the right side of the touchpad still has a dead zone of considerable size. So, when I start a mouse movement too far on the right side, it wont register....

    The single biggest roadblock for casuals to use Linux

    A friend was using a computer with Windows 8.1 (I know lol), and her streaming services stopped working on it. Because she was using an old computer, she couldn't upgrade to Windows 11. So I suggested installing Linux and even doing it for her, but the problem is that most streaming services don't work on Linux. After making...

    I watch Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney on my Ubuntu laptop on Firefox all the time. I have a laptop setup in front of my treadmill just to watch shows while I walk.

    Are you watching in regular 1080p or above, or the gimped 720p most DRM services impose on the Linux platform?

    If it's 1080p+, how?
    If it's 720p, that's not really acceptable to most people.

    I think the point of OP is that Streaming services don't care about Linux and downright gimps them, so the apps will "look better". Casual users won't know or care about the technical reasons.

    I've used Aqara smart plugs from the start, which are Zigbee, but I have recently started using Nous A1Z ones, because they are smaller and can handle 16A, where the Aqara ones only handle 10A.
