This is a great article! It's really interesting.

I have two comments to make, and I hope nobody thinks this is me trying to disagree with the article or something, I don't want it to come across as defensive. In explaining some of the challenges medieval cities go through and saying Banished is a pretty accurate game, I think this might just be a genre issue. I consider Banished a colony management game, not a city builder, and indeed, in colony management games your people's health and safety are usually a much larger concern than in a city builder.

The second comment is that the writer suggests a game with flood mechanics and arable farm land. I don't remember if it was out in March of 2020, but Timberland is out now. It's a beaver based colony management game that includes a lot of fluid dynamics. It has flood mechanics like described. It's unrealistic, of course, because they're beavers. But also because flooding isn't the end of the world if it gets into your buildings, I think it's more of an inconvenience. Regardless, I think it's a cool game to check out.

JackbyDev ,

I'm not saying they're realistic, just that it has some of the flood/farming mechanics the blog author wanted to see in a game.

I switched about a year ago. It's going great. The only problem with my computer was because my RAM broke, but that would've still happened on Windows.

JackbyDev ,

The one time I used that official forum I did my due diligence and laid out what I ended up doing to solve my problem as well as responding to the other person with a similar one. I am not DenverCoder9.

What I hate is when I find a solution for some old post but it's locked because "you should just make a new question" well FUCK YOU BECAUSE SEARCH ENGINES GO THERE AND I HAVE THE ANSWER AND I WANT TO HELP PEOPLE! BUT FUCK ME I GUESS 😭

JackbyDev ,

Yeah, a lot of upholding the letter of the law instead of the spirit of the law as well as following rules without really critically evaluating why they're rules in the first place. (Example: Answering an old thread should be fine, but folks just view it as bad and lock them.)

JackbyDev ,

Oh gods, delete this shit right now. I do not claim this energy. The ketchup wine will have no place in my mind. Begone from me!

Are there "big accounts" on the threadiverse?

There’s been a couple of minor dust-ups on mastodon about the conduct of so-called “big accounts” there that I do not care to comment on, but it has got me thinking — do we even have “big accounts” on the threadiverse (Lemmy/piefed/mbin)? I don’t think there’s any handle I’ve seen where I’ve been like “oh...

Flying Squid was memorable but has been gone for a while. My understanding was they moved to a different country and haven't posted since.

JackbyDev ,

Act 1 can take super long though

JackbyDev ,

I'm not trying to "gay you" but you could easily be biromantic but heterosexual, ya know? As in romantically attracted to people of all genders but only sexually attracted to the opposite gender.

JackbyDev ,

Why can't they just make a Discord server for free instead??

JackbyDev ,

Also this is pretty stupid to say because it basically just means spend less money. Yeah, no shit.

JackbyDev ,

Choosing to stop eating out is a way to reduce your standard of living.

JackbyDev ,

The point is that both are the same as "save money" when they should be giving more specific advice. Two pieces of good actionable advice have been given by you. "Just save money" is not a useful tip for "how to save money". What you're saying is useful.

JackbyDev ,

Somewhat same, but for me I'm just trying to cook more at home. Not necessarily save money. (Though it's still nice.) Have you compared the costs? It could be that even if you throw out half it's still cheaper, ya know? Or maybe closer to breaking even than you realize.

JackbyDev ,

Maybe people will shut the fuck up about Photoshop not working on Linux now. (Not saying it's not a valid complaint, I just get tired of hearing it.)

JackbyDev ,

POP ALREADY!

JackbyDev ,

My consciousness is on the cloud now, please speak for yourself!

JackbyDev ,

Oh you KNOW I had to be the robot.

JackbyDev ,

They even compared it to having to present papers in Nazi Germany. But this? This is totally fine to them.

Congratulations on achieving advertising!

JackbyDev ,
JackbyDev ,

I think sometimes it gives people analytics on how many people click the link when the link is to something they themselves don't control. But I'm not entirely sure if that's a common service shorteners offer.

JackbyDev ,

The only problem I've had so far on Linux was due to my RAM breaking. Same shit could've happened on Windows. As much as everyone talks about needing "manual intervention" in Arch, I had to do the same shit on Windows after a bad update pushed unsigned USB drivers (which I was unaware of, I only saw the blue screen) then once I did a system restore it just failed after wiping my hard drive despite only using tools from Windows itself. I ended up having to get a third party tool to fix it all, because the vhdx files Windows made assumed my computer was UEFI despite only supporting BIOS. It was a mess.

The moral of the story is: Windows still has these problems, people are just more used to solving them so it doesn't feel like they're solving a problem.

JackbyDev ,

Y'all should be impeaching him already.

Developer appreciation time!

Meme in three parts: 1: "I'm new to Linux, How am I doing this: …?" 2: Guy (Enthusiasts offering help) turning around looking at a good-looking woman (Cryptic CLI commands) while his apparent girlfriend (Accessible, user-friendly GUI tools) is looking at him like she's going to explode in a second 3: Very sad cat in front of a laptop looking at the camera (Devs of underappreciated GUI tools)

You should open a bug report saying that the GUI hid the error from you. That's a problem.

Bully Online, the ambitious mod that brought multiplayer and more to Rockstar's classic school sim, shuts down a month after launch: 'This was not something we wanted' ( www.pcgamer.com )

We expressed concerns about Bully Online, a massively ambitious mod that promised to bring multiplayer and a host of new systems to Rockstar's classic school sim, when we ran across it in November 2025. It looked great, but the initial release was limited to people willing to pay for it through the mod team's Ko-Fi page, and...

I've literally never peed in my entire life, you're probably a medical oddity or something.

JackbyDev ,

I also have an odd self taught style. I never use my left index finger. I don't know how I developed this or why it was optimal. It's not like there's anything wrong with it.

Due to the way my school issued punishments, I got the same punishment for getting into a fight as I did for being a few minutes late to class. 2 days in school suspension.

JackbyDev ,

Yeah, unless you're getting cramps or something I think you're good lol. That's very fast. I don't think I'm nearly that fast.

Unitarian Universalist churches exist, but things like parks or community centers where events are held are probably more what you're looking for.

JackbyDev ,

I'm probably being too generous with what I'm calling community center, I should edit it. As an example, in my head I was picturing a local park which my city has folks come and perform at and such. It's just a stage in a park but there are events there.

JackbyDev ,

I've only been camping in a tent three times as an adult. I heard some interesting things. Never anything ur am legend worthy.

One was a bachelor's party. Some of the folks got into some things, I didn't partake. I was super anxious about the trip already. It was in the southern most part of the Appalachian mountains. Honestly probably not really even in the mountains. Maybe more in the Blue Ridge area. Anyways, it's quiet. I hear a weird noise. I immediately recognize as a helicopter. With no other sounds and being surrounded by hills and trees they sounds WEIRD! You can hear them from way further. It sounded so ominous. I jokingly turn to the group and ask "Is that the trumpet?" Implying the trumpets that will sound during the rapture. I think I sort of got a few of 'em before they realized what it was!

From that same trip I remember finally being in my tent alone. First time being in a tent alone. As a kid I always had a buddy in bot scouts or parent. I was so fucking cold. I forgot a mat to put my sleeping bag on. As I'm laying there cold, cold as hell, trying to not panic about being "alone" (because my friends are so close! Just in the other tents!) I just hear the wind. Again, in the middle of a quiet forest with only the wind creeping along my imagination takes over. I imagine it as a giant air serpent creeping along through the trees, weaving and rustling all the leaves.

The last one was with my wife for a friend's birthday party. We hear leaves crunch near the tent and hear little sniffs by our heads outside the tent. Based on the sounds I think it was a racoon or a opossum. So cute!

The other time we went camping was with my parents. They were in their RV and my wife and I just slept in the tent outside lol. It's the only time we brought our dog camping. She was such a good watch pup. Just sat on the bed, very alert. I think she was nervous. If she could talk she probably has weird stories about that night. It's interesting to think that all the noises you hear at a large campsite with RVs that you know are just folks doing stuff probably freak the dog out. She doesn't know. Even if she does, she knows she's supposed to protect us from people. Or at least thinks she does.

JackbyDev ,

I hate Arch! It's dumb.

CachyOS my beloved!

JackbyDev ,

Shout out to the CachyOS crew. Their Discord is helpful. (Booooo, Discord, I know, I know.) They're friendly and helpful.

JackbyDev ,

Look up CachyOS and reevaluate if this is a joke.

JackbyDev ,

Nice! I love it. The community has been nice too.

JackbyDev ,

That's a perfectly fine thing to do at 15. Cuddling while watching a movie. I think you're just looking through it through a different lens now that you're (presumably) no longer a teenager.

JackbyDev ,

Lemmit already existed and was annoying as hell. It was the first account I remember blocking.

JackbyDev ,

I get you, it's pretty easy, but I'm just saying trying to get somebody into a hobby, and then saying "actually you can't talk to people until you schedule a test" is a huge barrier.

JackbyDev ,

There's no restriction to purchase this stuff, so licensing will only stop accidents, not intentional bad actors. Even Baofengs can be put into a "ham mode" so they don't transmit out of band. I don't think we'd see it happen, but a license class under technician targeted at getting people legally able to use lower power handhelds super quickly would be nice. Even the technician question bank has questions about things that ultimately don't really matter for making sure people operate in band as they should. The metaphor I give folks is like if your driver's license test asked you questions about how to build engines. (And part of the reason we won't ever see that is because amateur radio licenses allow you to construct and use your own equipment, as opposed to things like FRS where the part itself has to be certified.)

JackbyDev ,

Oh nice. I see it for ~$80 on their site, but still, that's cool. Never heard of it. I ended up getting a Xiegu G90 for HF. I'm curious how well the RT-880 works for HF. Gonna see if there are any reviews of it. I would've loved to know about it last year lol.

JackbyDev ,

For an extra 0 on the price I hope so lol. I've been happy with it!

JackbyDev ,

All the more reason to moderate it and find weird cookie cutters and have other people draw.

Big Picture mode in Steam is wonky as fuck for me

Edit: Not sure why this is so controversial. It's always been weirdly laggy, even in my old computer and at other people's houses. To be fair, I haven't tried Heroic, but I was never saying Steam was better/worse
