Given the situation with TikTok—marked by censorship and the app's recent control by MAGA-aligned interests—I checked Reddit to see what TikTok users are saying. It turns out many are asking for alternatives. Most replies suggest other proprietary apps, and I haven’t seen any recommendations for decentralized platforms...
Out of curiosity, have you got a link or something for these workshops (and are they done in English or French)? I'm out in Ottawa, seems like a useful thing to have in my pocket to share with folks since there's a lot of movement between the two cities (and if online geography isn't a barrier).
Ngl, I'd watch the fuck out of a movie about juggalos toppling a surveillance state. Culminating in the cinematic final showdown I've always pictured in my head when listening to I Want My Shit..
It looks like some issues may arise if/when an instance's domain name changes. Is there any way we can change federation so that we don't need to rely on such a central point of failure?
I almost feel like someone needs to do a write-up of the [email protected] debacle - while not a 1-for-1 example (it wasn't a migration attempt that functioned the exact same way as it would with PieFed), it's a good case study for userbase-community owner-instance dynamics that should be considered, specifically the bit in your last sentence.
I saw my doctor recently and while talking about what a lazy fat-ass I am, he mentioned something about replacing the crap I usually snack on with healthier snacks like seasoned air-fried cauliflower or something like that. So what are your favorite healthy-ish snacks that can be made relatively quickly when I feel like shoving...
If you happen to be in Ottawa, I have a couple suggestions via PM. Otherwise, stuff that fits the feel you'd probably like exists, but is generally overshadowed by more establishment spots. Takes a little digging (and even what's there may not suit your tastes).
Not neccessarily a bad thing though, alcohol being a poison and whatnot (I just happen to like poison).
Caveat - I've never been in Europe long enough to know the exact feel of a good homey Euro pub, for comparison purposes.
I think part (though not all) of the issue is discoverability. There's other communities where this isn't as prevalent, but a) they're not always easy to find, and b) for this as well as other reasons, they might not be super active (if people don't know it exists, who's posting?)
I get around the first bit by trawling All New once and a while. One feature I will say I liked on reddit was the random community function. But while I like that it's a smaller userbase here for some reasons, it does mean less diversity of interests.
I'd say a script-kiddie can modify a script, but only if there's some resource that says 'change this part to do x'. They don't understand why that change does what it does, though, or how to troubleshoot if it doesn't actually do the thing.
Signed: config file kiddie - I just do what youtube or forum denizens tell me to do until it works. Imagine there's script-kiddies out there that do something similar.
What's your take? Would you take seriously dating a single parent or would you do it just for temporal fun? Should people with kids date just people with kids?
I'd say if you understand that if it gets serious, you will find yourself in a parental role of some kind (specific degree varies situation to situation), and accept that as a something you will step up to as necessary, go for it.
I was a dumb-as-rocks 20 year old when I met my ex-wife and her kid. Now my marriage is over, but I am that kid's de facto dad and that's pretty much a 'for life' thing. I don't regret that and they are the most important human in my life, and I like to think I did a decent enough job helping raise them (no worse than my own young parents, at least). But if I had a time machine, I can't say I wouldn't go back and ask young Cracks if he really understands what he's getting into.
That said, circumstances could have been such that the dynamic was different (older kid at time of arrival, more involved biodad, etc.), so YMMV. But regardless, people with kids are a package deal, and that needs to be seriously considered when dating/getting into a relationship. If that doesn't line up with what you want out of life, there's absolutely no shame in that.
I was a participant in what was described as a "tipsy, low-kick cancan line" by a young journalist covering a show for a university's student newspaper when I was a pre-teen (ah, all-ages shows, good times).
I've been censored on the radio on two separate occasions (made jokes about a competing station when calling in for a giveaway).
There's others but they are far lamer, if you can believe it.
I'm convinced horror games are the best medium for horror. I love reading horror fiction and watching horror movies too. I just feel like when playing a good horror game, the player is "in the drivers seat". I'm open to hearing other opinions though!
Multimedia/'alternate reality' (what people used to call ARGs, now I think there's some other term).
Edit: suppose this is a cop out though, since it involves combos of film, literature, audio, web design, and occasionally IRL events or materials. So putting that aside, I think video games edge out film a smidge, in the hands of the right creator/team.
100% yes, particularly having done it multiple times. Each place represents a particular arc of my life to this point, and I get a little sentimental/pensive about it if cruising streetview or, much more intensely, going back there.
An interesting feeling that pops up with this sometimes: you ever 100% a video game level (Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 specifically came to mind for me) and replay it afterwards? You can still do stuff, still walk around, but there's a sense of emptiness compared to when you still had goals there. Those are now long finished and not to be repeated. The game's progressed elsewhere.
I've also experienced had a new, related feeling following a recent visit for a show in one of these places, given some recent life changes. Very much like when you reach the end of a stage later in the game, and something new unlocks in those earlier levels.
I don't like Facebook, but my mother and my father-in law both have facebooks. I tried some different social medias but I can't make my mom go because the social medias are from other countries and stuff. Are there any American social medias where my mom would feel comfortable putting her face on?...
Pretty much repeating what's been said here, but a) how does she actually use it beyond her own posting behaviour, and b) who is she talking to?
If she literally just posts random crap on her feed and talks only to kin, a concentrated effort to move family to something like Friendica might be a useful project. If she's interacting with a wider network of friends/acquaintances, community/hobbyist groups, news outlets (you can do that in the States, can't do it in Canada anymore), Facebook games, and various slop vectors, you have a much more challenging task on your hands.
There's a lot of shit on Facebook that's hard to replace in a way people who otherwise don't care about Meta would use. If you're looking to start anywhere, I'd say start setting up a Friendica instance, have a plan to onboard key family members with the least amount of friction possible, seed your own feed with grandma bait, and keep bringing it up ("Oh yeah, [x] was great, I took a lot of pictures, here's the link to my Friendica page. Oh, you need an account? It's just your e-mail, password's GrammyGram@420. I'll show you how to change it*.")
*Not a Friendica user so I dunno how it works in detail, but you get the idea. Also doesn't need to be Friendica specifically, but this one's usually brought up when talking Facebook alternatives specifically.
Honestly, different strokes for different folks, but I always want to know if people tried broccoli roasted with oil, salt, pepper, paprika and garlic powder before solidifying this opinion.
Blanched/boiled broccoli is meh at best, and I've met folks who have never had it prepared any other way. And raw definitely isn't for everyone (I like it but could see how others wouldn't).
There's something about the statement "Come visit Santa's Workshop, just off the Whiteface Memorial Highway!" that feels ... idk? Off, or perhaps a bit on the nose?
But regardless it's obviously cope, we all know Santa lives in Canada, in the H0H forward sortation area.
Unfortunately, yeah. Re: point one - I'd be absolutely shocked if there isn't such an instance already, or if the activity isn't being scraped direct from ActivityPub via some other methods.
Re: point two ... idk man, I'm one of those idiots that still has Facebook at the moment, and I've seen some shit that makes me suspicious (though whether that's based on my lemmy activity or any one of a number of other leaky things is anyone's guess).
I simply don't know enough to state anything with confidence, but know your Lemmy activity (generally speaking) is very, very public. Anyone want to chime in and call me an idiot (re: this topic, otherwise I already know) with examples? It'd be deeply reassuring :)
For more engagement: a Doom reskin where you shot balloons at some (to child me) scary af toys that came alive and were ornery. Windows 3.1/DOS era, was part of a shareware collection.
Edit: You know what I don't think this was what I'm thinking about BUT I did play this and may be mixing the memory with another shooter in the same collection.
Streaming mostly, with a little vinyl now and then. A little bit of radio but even that's usually streaming over the internet.
Actually, now that I think of it I have a tape I need to run through another tape player to confirm whether the tape is broken, or my tape player is. Bought a Sons of Butcher demo with tracks I haven't seen elsewhere yet (have heard live) at a show a while back, played successfully once and now it doesn't. But I only have one of those kinda shitty vinyl+tape+aux+radio+bluetooth players you see on Amazon around christmas, so it's even odds which is busted.
Sounds like your head is filled with music. (don't ask me why but Dropkick Murphys and The Real McKenzies are inextricably linked in my head [edit: probably because I keep mispelling Murphys])
My ex decided to take up photography. She's now essentially semi-pro and it was a terrible financial decision for all involved.
Christmas lists started to get reeeal aspirational. No, you are not getting a lense that's the financial equivalent of a decent used car for Christmas. Go shoot more gigs and weddings.
Oooh it's been pretty tempting there, Clippy m'lad. But the number of hard drug users I've met and liked is pretty low (not zero, though), which holds me back a bit.
Probably a mix of the oblivious, the aligned (we have our contingent that's OK with the direction of the U.S. They just suck), and people with family in need of support (lot of retirees in warm/dry places).
I was praying my grandfather would get his head out of his ass and come back to Canada for familial support after my grandmother died, but he's a stubborn old bastard who still gripes about PET and apparently renounced his Canadian citizenship at some point. So it's scheduled visits from his kids and a system where they get a text message if people don't see him at the dog park two days in a row. They kinda have to go, he's got no one else at this point.
I've grown content with the fact there are some aspects of the human experience I will never know first hand or need to know, and that's ok.
I always make sure to nod or high-five the person I see in the puppy mask at shows sometimes, then leave them to their mysterious doings. Sometimes, it's good enough to know a door exists - you don't always have to open it.
Say if someone came up to you and asked "If you were a boy/girl what would your name be?" could you answer them without needing think or is that not something most people give a thought to?
Actually, I have one at the ready, mostly because my dad used to call my brother and I by our feminine equivalent names to bug us as children (different time, young army guy).
Have not given thought to preferred choices, though, just that one.
There's merit to this. One of the beautiful things about this era is it's cheap as fuck (compared to other eras of history) to make and put out cool shit. Hell, we had a kid in town a few years back make a feature-length horror film with their phone that got screened at the indie theatre here. But you've got to dig and deal with the Sturgeon's Law factor to find gems among all the cruft out there.
Also noted that folks may want the mainstream entertainment of old, but real talk - once you're a certain age/level of experience, there's a good chance you're not part of the mainstream audience. Large groups don't make the stuff you like because you're not the target audience anymore, and four-quadrant approaches are dealing with a very different audience than they used to.
Been thinking about this quote from Terrence McKenna a lot recently (might seem a little quaint in the face of today's media landscape, but I take away a good message):
We have to create culture, don't watch TV, don't read magazines, don't even listen to NPR. Create your own roadshow. The nexus of space and time where you are now is the most immediate sector of your universe, and if you're worrying about Michael Jackson or Bill Clinton or somebody else, then you are disempowered, you're giving it all away to icons, icons which are maintained by an electronic media so that you want to dress like X or have lips like Y.
This is shit-brained, this kind of thinking. That is all cultural diversion, and what is real is you and your friends and your associations, your highs, your orgasms, your hopes, your plans, your fears. And we are told 'no', we're unimportant, we're peripheral. 'Get a degree, get a job, get a this, get a that.' And then you're a player, you don't want to even play in that game. You want to reclaim your mind and get it out of the hands of the cultural engineers who want to turn you into a half-baked moron consuming all this trash that's being manufactured out of the bones of a dying world.
