WATCH: CBS Sunday Morning "Inheritances": Adam Tendler's musical testimony of love, grief and memory
Concert pianist Adam Tendler had a distant relationship with his father. So, when he inherited a sum of money from his dad, he used it to commission piano works by 16 acclaimed composers, creating music that touches on a vast range of emotions encompassing grief, loss, parent-child relationships, and estrangement. Lee Cowan reports on Tendler's moving tribute, "Inheritances."

PEDACITO DE TIERRA is a deeply personal work led by GRAMMY-nominated saxophonist José Antonio Zayas Cabán, rooted in his vision to honor the stories of the Puerto Rican diaspora in the Twin Cities. While grounded in local voices, the piece resonates far beyond Minnesota — speaking to the experiences of Puerto Ricans across the United States and echoing themes shared by immigrant communities everywhere: displacement and belonging, memory and identity, longing and resilience. Composed by Angélica Negrón and performed by Zayas Cabán alongside saxophonist Ryan Smith and pianist Casey Rafn, the work layers oral histories, electronics, and chamber instrumentation to explore the complexity of cultural identity. Shaped by the voices of Puerto Rican storytellers, PEDACITO DE TIERRA reflects José’s commitment to lifting up community narratives through music that is as nuanced and resilient as the people it represents.

Yo-Yo Ma “is a musician of immense conscience, a wholeheartedly earnest presence who tends to bring out the best in whatever company he is in” (The New York Times). Sharing the stage with Gustavo Dudamel, Ma brings his sensitive playing to the world-premiere performances of an underwater field recordings-inspired concerto by Puerto Rican composer Angélica Negrón. The collaboration between Negrón and Ma sparked from an experiential creative workshop she facilitated with Ma and the Billion Oyster Project in New York City. Richard Strauss’ tone poems are arguably among some of the most richly orchestrated and strikingly adventurous pieces written for orchestra. Ein Heldenleben (A Hero’s Life) is no exception as it closely follows the composer’s own real-life conflicts, resolutions, and romances along the way through its bold battle music, soaring melodies, and passionate spirit.
