A lot of bland supporting performances and some pretty rote plotting, but Pam Grier and Yapphet Koto are both stars and there’s a couple decent chases and a fun, funky 70s score.
Thorny, funny, and quite moving.
But above all else, terrifically performed. Coel is excellent in the quieter, more reactive role, but McKellen is tremendous.
Will want to see again soon. Sodey is on an exceptional run of work—long may it last.
Time becomes a flat circle and a ghost becomes a flat sheet. Places accumulate the detritus of love, but eventually have to give them up, even as we do. Give me a love to wrap my arms around while I still have arms.
A movie about antichrists. If a man who uses scripture to lord it over and abuse women, kill for money, and terrorize children doesn’t qualify, I don’t know what does. As bleakly relevant today as it ever was. Absolutely chilling. And gorgeous too.
