I remembered this movie's story for the most part from when I watched it back when it came out, but I forgot the set-up as a sort of funny, ironic, fake documentary. I think that does make this even more intriguing as a story, but also such a light-hearted look at something so dark-hearted feels a little weird. It's a strong movie though - Jack Black is great and the Linklater's direction is full of detail. It does kind of all feel like a true-crime podcast though.
