  • Spacebar sounded really promising when I checked them out years ago.

The big Discord.com features currently left unimplemented or with partial implementations are: Voice/Video support (WebRTC protocol support implemented, but lacking UDP protocol implementation)

Unfortunately, seems like it’s still not at a point where it could cover basic Discord functionality.

Edit: I should be clear, I’m not trying to discourage it. I really hope it succeeds to the goal of parity with Discord! Love to hear from someone who has used it a bit.

  • I looked into Stoat around the time of their name change announcement.

On the one hand it looks good and is definitely the closest Discord clone at the moment. I was disappointed about a couple of things though:

    • They have a self hosted server option but it doesn’t have the full feature suite and seems like they’ve decided that it won’t in the foreseeable future.

    • They’re aware of federation and have no plans to head down that path for the software.

Bit of a shame because if I could self host the full software that’d be pretty damn good as a replacement for all of my friends. If it could be federated in a way where servers could work in tandem that’d be a great distributed alternative to Discord for the entire community! I understand why they’re not pursuing those avenues but it’s still a shame.

  • “The way I see AI, this is the biggest single biggest gold rush in human history. It’s going to generate so much wealth for everyone,” AirTrunk’s founder Robin Khuda told Forbes last year.

Oh, cool! Sounds like a great idea th-

But major AI companies are losing billions of dollars each year and there are already examples of newly-built, mega data centres sitting idle because of energy supply constraints.

Well, at least it will only effect people with monetary investment in-

It’s also not clear how domestic power bills will be affected, though some data centres in the US have pushed prices 267% higher for local residents.

  • gadget that lasts a few years before you have to toss them and replace them.

On one hand; yes they are disposable tech. On the other hand I have 2 sets of AirPods that are about 6 years old that I still use regularly.

I bought a brand new set and it’s amazing how much better the new ones are but I still use one set of my old ones at work and another set at home when I don’t want to risk the new ones. I can’t justify throwing out the old sets when they still work well.

  • I can’t remember who said it, because ABC radio had a bit of a revolving door of right-wing/Jewish representatives on this morning. When asked about police brutality against protesters the response was along the lines of “police took action against violent protestors” (and I’m super paraphrasing here because I can’t remember the wording) “and calling for the death of all Jews”.

I’m sure not everyone was peaceful but the 2 videos I’ve seen so far were essentially people protesting by just standing around and then having the shit kicked out of them by police. Hell of a stretch to reach the previous statement with the same person blanketing all injured protesters as “radicals” and “violent left” etc.

Feels like more and more of the narrative twisting that has become an ever increasing problem worldwide these days.
