    From the rehab:

Our sweet eastern red bat Nutmeg developed a persistent bacterial infection that was not resolved with conventional antibiotics. Our standard protocol involves regularly culturing persistent, unknown pathogens. Resistant infections lead to treatment failures, prolonged illness, and continuous stress. We isolated the bacteria for a pure culture, which further diagnostics determined the antibiotic suitable for treating this specific bacteria.

Thankfully sweet Nutmeg started her treatment today.

We utilize this tool often to help not only our patients recover but develop more effective protocols for future patients. When an infection doesn’t clear up with standard antibiotics, it often means the bacteria has become resistant to common treatments. It confirms exactly which pathogen is causing the infection, rather than relying on educated guesses.

Using targeted drugs helps prevent the further development of antibiotic resistance, which can happen if broad-spectrum antibiotics are used inappropriately. This is not a free service but an important one when considering pathogens with high intrinsic resistance to many common antibiotics.

Species specialization in wildlife rehabilitation is critical for identifying common disease, symptom and treatment strategies. We sincerely appreciate your support and your commitment to our mission.
