Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is there anything like church without the church?
6·8 days agoI have a couple of friends who go to one of the UU churches in Dallas. I think maybe Roe came from it.
Our art museum is free but for 100/yr we used to get a subscription that got us 4 free tickets per day to visiting exhibits that are normally $16 each, plus free parking which is normally $10 and it’s across the street from a big park with food trucks and activities.
Also, the zoo and botanical garden memberships that offer reciprocity with a bunch of other zoos or gardens.
In restaurants. Not so much at home. Though i do have a friend whose husband left her for his step sister.
At dinner my husband and i often sit silently on our phones texting each other to play ‘What’s that relationship?’
Insurance? Definitely! I know i could save money by changing but i also know that it will require at least three phone calls.
My vet is so good! 15 minutes after i leave i have an email that gives details of the appointment, explains any issues, and tells me when to follow up. I’ve asked her to be my primary care physician.

Cute! I made one in a similar color a few years ago for a friend. Really nice for airplanes, restaurants, movies, …places where it’s sometimes chilly but not cool enough for a jacket.

AskUSA@discuss.online•For those of you in the path of this big winter storm, how are you / how have you prepared?English
3·14 days agoCleaned up outside- picked up chair cushions, blowy things, and stuff that could be a trip hazard if it’s hidden under snow. Put up curtains to reduce drafts. Bought some breakfast food and soup ingredients. This house was without power for 4 days in 2021 so i picked up a generator from Facebook marketplace. I was hoping it would run the pool pump if needed, but it won’t. Got gas and tested the generator with two space heaters- all good. Made plans with my pool girl to drain the equipment if power goes out. Downloaded a power outage alarm for my phone. Let my friends know that we would pick them (and their animals) up if needed. Today i need to find the water key just in case. Currently snuggled up and working on a movie list. It’s just starting to get cold in Dallas- 24 degrees and slowly dropping throughout the day with light snow. Our biggest fears here are freezing rain on power lines and a grid that’s controlled by greedy assholes.
My son vacuums.
My son is a mechanic so it’s often chilly at work. He uses those rechargeable hand warmers in his shirt pockets.
I can’t wait to have French toast Saturday morning! Breakfast tacos Sunday morning! And maybe some beef bourguignon, chili, or chicken soup. The house i live in now was without power for 4 days in 2021. Fingers crossed!!

I made a deal with my freezer so it would give up the chicken nuggets that i put there last week.
Question for people who live in colder climates - why is it always so hot indoors? When I’ve been in new York, Chicago, Milwaukee, etc. in the winter it’s miserable inside. It’s 12 degrees outside and you step into a restaurant or shop where it feels like it’s 80 degrees. You’re immediately sweating because you have a jacket, gloves, etc. and you have to find someplace to put them.
Was good. I was working in a new field, learning good stuff, and beginning to get my finances cleaned up after 2 years in school.

One of my kitties prefers a pad. I put a pad in a box and i just change it every night. It’s better than the floor or my bed.
