The creator of Nearby Glasses made the app after reading 404 Media’s coverage of how people are using Meta’s Ray-Bans smartglasses to film people without their knowledge or consent. “I consider it to be a tiny part of resistance against surveillance tech.”
It looks like it’s just looking for BT MAC addresses and if they look like they’re from Meta a warning pops up. As soon as Meta starts obfuscating their MACs this app will be made useless. Don’t get your hopes up and it won’t work for glasses that don’t advertise a BT MAC. It also probably also false alarms for Oculus VR headsets.
They can’t obfuscate a BT MAC and still get their product approved to use radios by the FCC. The same technique works for police bodycams:

Thanks for that, TIL
Can someone link to the app download? Site has a paywall for me
I just found it in the Play Store. Search for the app’s name, “Nearby Glasses.”
Should have called it
Nearby Glassholesdeleted by creator
It’s also on Github https://github.com/yjeanrenaud/yj_nearbyglasses
This app will be banned soon.
Of course. Have to protect the privacy of the glasses wearers.
