This doesn’t strike me as a happy ending for anyone… Whole story is sad mixed with wish-fulfillment, which in my mind makes it even sadder because whatever supernatural shit is going on never happened and would have never happened…
Happily (?) this is a flashback; Granny here is telling the story to the person that the rescued baby will eventually become.
Of course, it doesn’t exactly turn out how the mother might have imagined.
