I fully agree that nixos moving off GitHub is a nonstarter for technical reasons. The nixpkgs repo is enormous and has caused loads of infrastructure problems at GitHub over the years.
But the NixOS foundation currently has over 300K Euros in their open collective account. They get free sponsorship from GitHub for the repo and free sponsorships covering the very expensive build and caching services too.
My plan was actually to sell accounts to creators for a relatively small fee, and either not sign up free users at all or set up a separate service for free accounts. For the porn one it’d be asking the creators to pay a small fee so they could own their own distribution. Other people could obviously see the content, and creators could interact with lemmynsfw and anywhere else. But by selling accounts it would give them a space where they could interact with the fediverse and know that they are hosted on a thing that is actually paid for without advertising. They can’t get kicked off if they’re the intended users.
It’d also be a way to get funding into paying someone (me) to work on fixing the issues they had in the various fediverse services. That’s how things get built, and bugs get fixed. I care about improving the fediverse and was pursuing a path to get some more funding for it.
Not everything has to be provided for free for it to be a good thing.

I setup a stack of Lemmy+Mastodon+Linkstack on subdomains, with the intention of selling accounts to people who would benefit from fully controlling their own social media presence…including adult creators. If you’re wondering why there aren’t other instances catering to that, it’s because hosting that content is expensive (lots of images/video content), time consuming (tons of mod reports), legally problematic (you better respond to mod reports/police inquiries quickly), and there is no simple way to accept payments since everything kicks you off if they know it’s porn related.

I’m working on something that allows for custom CRDTs since I agree no one CRDT strategy is best for any given app. There are several others I know of but they only use a single type. I think Automerge is the most popular current one but I don’t know if it has many actual users.

The reason his last pay package of 50 billion was awarded to him is because he met the milestones for that. It was a similar deal to this one where they set top end milestones that everyone felt were ridiculous and they’d never hit them. Mostly stock targets IIRC.

Yes and no. Like yes, that can be true. But a lot of tools don’t handle commas correctly no matter how you escape them.
The only problem with that plan is that there is no way to know that a Klansman would be in the image until you open it.

I’m glad this project is getting some more attention, maybe even getting funding from Ubuntu since they’re using it? Last time I touched it most of the code was still pretty clearly written by Rust beginners and non-systems programmers so it likely had/has many such issues to uncover. Ubuntu putting it into their distro should hopefully get more experienced (and actually paid!) devs taking a closer look.
So you’re also contributing to the declining viewership that these channels are complaining about. They make no money off of your watch time so to them it is the same as no view at all.
I wrote a full rant about this yesterday as I have been trying to decide on licensing for a large OSS project that I’ve been developing. Licensing and funding are inextricably linked, so I wanted to make the right decision up front.
