Someone else controls what your copy of Unity does, and they want to get paid. They can alter the deal at any time. Spend year(s) investing while praying they do not alter the deal any further.

There are other considerations one can discuss (what do you want to make, user prior coding experince, what jobs want these days) but if you value your software freedom it’s an easy question answered by looking at the software license. MIT > Proprietary.

Can’t say it’s obvious how to change certificates on my motherboard. Just updated the BIOS and had to turn off SecureBoot so it could boot into my Linux install (MSI B450 Tomahawk Max).

Who decides what SecureBoot considers trustworthy? If SecureBoot is controlled by someone else then it can be used against the user. The aversion to SecureBoot is justified.

My understanding is the issue on calling it open source was a sincere difference of word usage (can see the source code) and going forward they would use a different term for their licence intention (can see the code but must pay the copyright holder if you make money off forking/using it).

I’m a software freedom enjoyer so I don’t have most of those types of apps already (only Discord… which I hope friends ditch soon).

When I looked into installing a new OS it I needed some program or use Android Studio which had it. However, the AS binary demanded I agree to an EULA beyond the “open source” license I was expecting. Whatever I needed it couldn’t find an up to date method of compling it myself.

Do they think the AI written code Just Works ™? Do they feel so detached from that code that they don’t feel embarrassment when it’s shit? It’s like calling yourself a fictional story writer and writing “written by (your name)” on the cover when you didn’t write it, and it’s nonsense.

Forcing the copyright holder to sell on DVD would be problematic. Why not just permit others to offer it in a format that is apprently in demand (e.g. by reducing copyright to 5 years, instead of ~5 billion)?

Pirating is indeed one thing (on boats… stealing, with violence and murder). If you say “unauthorised copying” instead of using the music industry’s propaganda term then maybe nuance is easier to see.

Can you save all chat logs on Discord?

I refuse to verify my age with a face scan or government ID for an online account/profile… It’s too easy to imagine how fucked up that will go.

The more I delete profiles to platforms with unwanted disturbing features the more recluse I become. It must look to acquaintances that I don’t care to speak (to them) but what can I do? I cannot imagine convincing even computer-literate friends to switch to something - as they will have the same problem.

Do I need to retire my Discord gaming server before I’m locked out of controlling it?
