There's a zillion things in the world to be mad about but today one of them for me is that they made Outlook worse. Outlook! They changed the attachment reminder so it now activates on the 'do not open attachments' warning your org puts on incoming external emails, so now it pops on EVERY. EMAIL.

Excellent question! I was just talking about this with a friend earlier today, so you have impeccable timing.

This is not my first fursona, but my previous ones have, for the most part, been feline. [Relevant previous ask] I think I had a fox at one point but it was pretty short-lived and I wasn't as involved in the furry community then as much as I was drawing anthro and animal characters for fun - so having something to pin my identity on, or to use as an identity, was not a necessity because I was not associating with other people. This was when I was a tween mostly.

The big problem with this is that it's very easy to misgender a cat. People do it all the time IRL and furry spaces are no different. Plus, cats broadly are often considered feminine in western-Anglophone society, so especially as I reached a point of full commitment in my transition, socially, I felt like I needed a change. A stag - not just a deer, but a deer with big, obvious antlers - is a lot harder to misgender. In this way, it's something of a gender performance. But, at the same time, it holds significance for me as a transgender person because female cervids can have antlers too, specifically in species like reindeer. Astute viewers may note that the style of antlers is mostly in the reindeer configuration, rather than the broad, branching antlers of, for example, whitetail. This is also because they're easier to draw.

My fursona also has a lot of neck fluff. This is for two reasons. In the funniest possible order, 1. I think Sawsbuck is an enlightened Pokemon design, and 2. I didn't want to give up everything about my feline sonas. I was particularly struck by a comic on Tumblr called The Mane Event and other posts about maned lionesses. So there's a lot of gender and genderfuckery going on.

Another factor, I experienced personal growth as well as literal growth. When I had feline sonas I felt like I had something to prove and a lot of unbridled rage. That's no longer true, partially because of a lot of personal Events which have Occurred but also because I'm an adult and I make my own choices about how I spend my time, money, and energy. I'm now able to put my rage and frustration into actions that cause a material change in the world around me, with more freedom and agency than I had before. I'm also no longer forced to go to evangelical christian church, which I think would drive a lot of people into a prolonged fit of rage. I also no longer feel like I have something to prove because I have proven a lot. I graduated with honors in both my undergrad degrees, I started a not-for-profit organization, and I've retained art skills that I spent 10 years building. Even though I'm not doing art professionally anymore, mostly because of all the other shit I'm doing, I feel good about what I've done, proud of what I've achieved, and fulfilled by what I'm presently doing. So the feline expressions as a response to helpless and powerless feelings - I don't need that anymore.

I also feel that I depart from some other furries in the way I think about my fursona. I didn't choose a deer because I 'felt like' one. I'm a therian, but my theriotype is a Bengal cat, or something close to it. But much like a per-sona, I see my fur-sona as a vector to engage with the online furry community in particular, but other online communities as well. For me it's kind of like wearing different outfits to work and school, etc. This is how I choose to present myself, and I lovingly craft each part of it. If I wanted something that was like me I'd draw a person, but in a space where I can be anything, I would rather take a more creative interpretation of my self.

I also came up with a banger design. Rule of Cool is big here. It might not be the most elaborate, but it's easy to draw and fun to draw. I combined elements - reindeer horns, sika deer spots - and came up with something I really liked. I don't think I've posted the first iteration of this sona's development here, but I know I have posted this piece with the original outfit:

In this original interpretation, there's still some "don't fuck with me" vibes happening with the spikes on the shoulder of the leather jacket - which, by the way, I don't own, I actually wear a flight jacket most of the time - but you will have to trust me when I say it's much less, lol. The spikes on the jacket also mirror the spots on the shoulders and hips - this is an element I picked because it makes the stag distinct from, say, a horse or other brown quadruped; but also because I have a skin condition that gives me spots everywhere, and this was a way of having fun with something I don't really like IRL. Another thing that would have been hard to do with a feline, but easy with this.

Here's a piece I dug out of the archive with (one of!) the cat fursonas, for comparison. Mine is on the left here. This was a later iteration of the cat fursonas, when I had already started sort of shifting in the direction of another species, but hadn't "sealed the deal" yet, so the cat has antlers. Because why not.

Absolutely. The biggest threats are really just day to day browsing, accidental clicks and purposeful ones, plus they use AI (ick, but they've been sold a lie and we're working on it) We have no reason to anticipate that they are more likely than average to be targeted by anyone, but they're used to an internet that didn't act like malware yk

The funny answer is because the alternative is a rock subscription service

The real answer is because I made a post a few months ago suggesting that we manufacture fake discourse to give WAFRN a reputation among other social media sites, and offering roles for people to choose, such as "person who steals rocks from national parks and shows them off online," which organ-harvest-coordinator accepted. I don't remember the other ones now but one of them was "person who has bad food opinions" which I believe girl-man-and-the-boy-woman accepted
