phew I finally got the shop updated with new physical products. Original art, little badges, novelty squeaky bones... and there's more to come later this year as I built up my stock range.

I've tried to make sure there's something for all budgets.

This genderless sleeveless cropped hoodie is fully reversible in orange sequined tule over brown satin on one side and a metallic brocade on the other side.

This is an example of the queer and drag focused garments and accessories I'll be making. Each piece will be its own statement, slow fashion, and unique. Future items will use deadstock, remnants, new, and repurposed materials.

This one isn't for sale, it's already taken.

A cropped sleeveless hoodie on a mannequin. The garment is completed in an orange sequined fabric on the outside, and a metallic brocade on the inside.

The name for a baby donkey is still 'burrito' and nothing you can say or do will convince me otherwise.

Real tired of a certain sort of North American assuming everything posted online is about North America and correcting people who are not in, or posted about, North America for posting wrong.

Having to put a disclaimer on things posted online, purely for the benefit of these people, is ridiculous.

If you're after a very last minute gift idea, might I propose this as inspiration? I had to make 50 squeaky bones for an event recently and decided it'd be a very good idea to document the process so you can see how I went about it.

Change the shape, and this is a good project idea for decorations or even simple stuffed toy gifts.

More name stuff.

A friend elsewhere reminded me many boomers and early GenX folk don't use their birth names - they go by nicknames that may be nothing to do with their actual birth certificate name.

I realised of my immediate family, mum, her brothers, dad, his brother & wife - and all their kids - none of them use their biological name. three quarters use entirely different names. the rest use similarish nicks.

It's just me. only me, who uses the name on my birth certificate.

Holy wow.

vulgalour ,
@vulgalour@birdbutt.com avatar

@NanoRaptor It's so prevalent that my late gran (Silent Generation) was asked what her full name was fairly regularly because people assumed Betty must be short for something else. It wasn't. Used to annoy her to no end.

Here it is folks, every car I've ever owned. The newest is either the Citroen Xantia estate or the Ledbury Maestro, both from 1997. Still haven't owned a car from this century.

Let's make this a little thread.

Austin A40 Farina
Technically my first car, went in on this with my brother but there's some debate as to whose car it really was. I kind of got muscled out of the whole thing and it was sold before I got a chance to enjoy it or really get involved. Disappointing, I quite like these.

It was the standard saloon and had no engine, or floors, but was otherwise a good sound project.

Next one I have no photo of. It was my first proper car, a Ford Sierra Sapphire in a graphite metallic colour. Bought from Charlie's Cheapies in Chesterfield. I really wanted the boxy 1980s Mazda 323 but my Dad talked me into the Sierra.

It burned oil, the top of the doors were rotten, it was full of filler... it ended up being an experimental project that I learned a lot on before scrapping it.

Volvo 240 saloon. I loved this car, bought it from a neighbour who sparked my love of Citroen BXs (he had quite a few) and it was a sturdy old thing. I hadn't passed my test at this point and couldn't afford to insure it so sadly I had to move it on. Enjoyed it all the same and preferred it to the 740 my Dad would later have a few of.

@vulgalour@birdbutt.com avatar

This little car was my first true automotive love and it was in the family for a very long time, I learned to drive in it, and it was the back up when other people needed a car before I'd passed my test. Taught me lots and lots about modifying and maintenance but life meant it didn't get to stay and we parted ways in 2012 so I never got to see the project through to completion.

Here she is, my second love, the one I still have 13 years later. At the time I bought this I really wanted either an FSO Polonez or an Austin Princess and this one turned up at the right time. We've been through a lot together, too much to document here.

I hated this car. When I bought it I hoped it was going to be like my old Polo and it kind of was. I never bonded with it, didn't like the driving position and just generally found it unpleasant. As luck would have it, I swapped it in a convoluted way for a car I really wanted...

(7/19)

vulgalour OP ,
@vulgalour@birdbutt.com avatar

So what did I swap the Golf for? That's right, another Princess! This was 'free' and had 180,000 miles and a blown head gasket. The plan was to resurrect this one while my other Princess (the black and pink one) was undergoing repairs because it should have been less work... you know, buy another car because the car/s you haev are broken? That logic.

(8/19)

vulgalour OP ,
@vulgalour@birdbutt.com avatar

... thing is, that red Princess needed a few things, so it has the doors off a Princess that was being stripped and a friend said "do you want a Princess?" and, well, no, I didn't at that point. The price was right and that's how I ended up with three Princesses.

It was SO rotten, omg. It also offered a surprisingly large amount of useful spares that helped a lot of cars.

(9/19)

vulgalour OP ,
@vulgalour@birdbutt.com avatar

At this point I had three broken cars. Or maybe I'd got rid of the red one... I'm not sure. Life was a bit broken around about now so I'm not so clear on the timeline. Anyway, what I definitely didn't need was an end of life Citroen BX estate, formerly owned by Hubnut, so obviously I ended up with that. BXs are one of my all time favourite cars, I love them, even worn out they're still good.

One of the few cars I've scrapped, it needed too much.

(10/19)

vulgalour OP ,
@vulgalour@birdbutt.com avatar

When it became clear the BX needed to go, I needed new transport. At least I think this is the way around it happened. Anyway, here's a Ledbury Maestro from 1997, the newest car I'd owned at that point. It was dreadful, in a good way. It was also apparently invisible, so many near misses with people pulling out of junctions in front of me at the last minute.

(11/19)

vulgalour OP ,
@vulgalour@birdbutt.com avatar

The Ledbury was moved on and I replaced it with a car from the same year, a Citroen Xantia estate. I was expecting this to be like my old BX and in some ways it was. Much better build quality. Unfortunately I couldn't get on with the driver's seat, the extent I put Peugeot 405 seats in (straight swap, funnily enough). The back pain was too much, it had to go. Boo.

@mcSlibinas Was a 19TGD, so naturally aspirated 1.9 diesel. Not a rapid vehicle by any means.

vulgalour OP ,
@vulgalour@birdbutt.com avatar

@mcSlibinas The understeering experience in a BX is as nothing compared to what happened when I went from a that to the Corsa... very nearly understeered straight into a metal fence taking a corner the Citroen was capable of and the Corsa very much wasn't!

Today I learned that DeviantArt is blocking VPN access.

Earlier this week, Instagram was blocking it, and now isn't.

Yesterday I couldn't access my online banking without the VPN turned on.

So yeah, I'd say the Online Safety Act is going about as well as any badly thought out government scheme ever is.

What do you think of an open-source app like VLC adding AI to auto-generate subtitles? This is not what VLC users and fans want. Many users don't want anything to do with AI in any form on their system, which again creates privacy issues. Folks who use VLC avoid streaming and other services for a reason. They don't want their data transmitted to parasites like OpenAI, Microsoft, or other AIs. I know VLC doesn't make any money. They need to get feedback from users before adding such a feature.

vulgalour ,
@vulgalour@birdbutt.com avatar

@nixCraft Some automated AI does have a practical application, voice-to-text recognition is one of them.

The trouble is these days you never know if AI tools are being ethically applied to improve user experiences, or being shoehorned in so that people can profit off the user's data and make the user's experience worse.

When I see AI is in a product I use, I look for ways to turn it off. Absolutely sick of it being crowbarred into every conceivable thing.

I really, really hate and . I feel absolutely forced to use it, based on what I do, and where a segment of the specialty coffee community is. Everytime I use it, I feel dirty.

I have 13K followers there. Yet, when I post things, the algorithm BURIES them. For example, I posed this attractive photo of the Hario Suiren there 1hr ago. Here's what the numbers are. Remember, 13K followers:

@coffeegeek What happens if you don't post on Instagram at all? Does this harm the rest of your business with what products etc. are offered to you? I can't really see how that's worth your time using that platform, it doesn't even cover the time it took you to pick up the product and place it in front of the camera.
