Hello everyone! We had a rough week last week, with two horrible accounts using our instance as a platform to spread hate, and an outage when we tried to upgrade to v4.5.0. Both of these really bothered us, so after a period of reflection, we've decided to make some changes.
We want to focus on making mas.to the best instance we can for our existing users (many of whose donations keep us running!) and their friends. And so we're moving to an invitation-only model until further notice.
Mastodon seems to be a bit broken for me today. I can post and see my posts in my profile, but my timeline hasn't updated all day. The last post I can see from another user was 6 hours ago. This is across the Megalodon and OpenVibe apps and the mas.to web interface.

We’re trying to get in touch with her to verify her and this is not helping.

Is the mas.to server a safe space for Palestinians suffering from Israel’s genocide and the resulting famine or should we be telling our friends in Palestine to create accounts elsewhere?
@aral We are, but we’ve also had a handful of accounts that are almost certainly scams. Our moderators are working with contacts who can vouch for validated individuals, but this is onerous and not foolproof. Regarding the account you mentioned earlier, this has already been validated with us and we’ve put a note on the account to confirm.

@joynewacc cannot seem to follow her form mastodon.social. We’re trying to get in touch with her to see if we can verify her for Gaza Verified (https://gaza-verified.org).

Here we are in another new year, and I can hardly believe it but mas.to is close to its SIXTH birthday! It's been an amazing journey and I've been delighted to have you all along for the ride ❤️
A long time ago when this instance was smaller I paid for it from my own pocket, but it's now much bigger and much more expensive!
