@vmaderna thanks to your painting, my wife discovered your website and instantly fell in love 🙂

She asks if this image is still available: https://victoriamaderna.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/CapyWitch_VMaderna.jpg

I misread the prompt for today's as "scary" and only at the end noticed that it says "scarf", so here's both.

people who recently recommended for a custom ... why did you decide to use it? what's making it worth it to you?

remember when I asked for a replacement for and then ranted about how none of the available solutions would also integrate with ?

Well shit. I did it again and scratched my own itch and barfed out another open source project.

  • single install serves as many sites as you want
  • can be used in static websites (it's lightweight web components in the frontend)
  • imports Disqus
  • fetches Mastodon replies as comments
  • supports different languages (so far en, fr, es, de)
  • probably has bugs

Wrote a bit of a brainfart yesterday on who I feel the whole "Open (Source|Culture) Movement" seems to be for and why that is a problem.

@tante I dunno. somehow this post rubbed me the wrong way.

I am not sure what this post argues for. It basically says open source developers should do better. Work harder. Make os available to more people without them to do any work, because that would mean to ask them to become open source developers themselves and that would make them lose their identity.

Or as you put it:

> Because what we are selling isn’t a solution to people’s actual problems but a new identity.

but here's the thing. we are not selling anything. 99% of open source is scratching a personal itch and making the itch scratcher available for free.

open source developers owe fuck all to users. most devs are actually nice people and will answer questions and consider feature requests within reason. but most OS devs are not out to save the world.

so yes it is very much from hackers for hackers. I grant you the freedoms I have. take the code and do whatever you want with it. but no, I won't host it for you so that you don't have to self host. because hosting costs money. I won't give you individual support for free, because my time is not free. I have to sell my work force to live just like you.

What your post boils down to is, open source devs should take over the role of mega corporations for free because that will solve the problem of mega corps being evil. users should be handled like paying clients without them being paying clients.

As with any fucking problem we're fighting with, the root cause of your issues is capitalism.

open source will not solve capitalism. I don't know what will.

so yeah. becoming a hacker is not for everyone. but within the system of capitalism I have to pay for the things I can't do myself. and I guess that's true for non-hackers too. self-hosting is not the answer? then pay someone or continue to sell yourself to the mega corps.

or here's a concrete idea: found a tech cooperative that offers Foss services to non-hackers. but careful, this might turn you into a hacker.
